So you mean out of all the good bands that were available and advertised on that site we, the school that will surely win the fan competition, gets stuck with Alan Jackson?!?! What's that all about...

I am not a country music fan.

But I will tell you that Alan Jackson will sell out whatever venue they put him in (presumably Coleman) for this. Period.

Looking at the other acts, he's one of the best fits for our campus. Country does incredibly well there and most other acts just don't sell.

You kidding? Alan Jackson will be the biggest performer to play in Tuscaloosa years. Are they planning to have the concert in the stadium, or is it going to be elsewhere?

How will this work? Will tickets be sold to attend the concert? Is it apart of A-Day? etc. My family and I are coming to spend the weekend in T-Town for A-Day. This would be cool to see AJ.

No, I wasn't kidding. He might be the biggest name to play @ UA in years, however, recently the people who have come to perform at concerts have all been acts who were real popular in the mid-late '90s but currently not so much...and Alan Jackson certainly fits that bill. (Some might say Daughtry has been the biggest name to come when he performed this past homecoming, and looking at billboard charts, etc. they'd be right.)

The list of performers at other schools for this "event" include the following: Maroon 5, ZZ Top, Fall Out Boy, Kelly Clarkson, Dierks Bentley and Fergie. All of whom have done a lot more nationally in the past few years than Alan Jackson. That can't be argued.

Now, if I could personally choose a band from their list, I would choose Counting Crows in a heartbeat, but maybe that's just me...

I would also assume they will have the concert in Coleman.

But the question that you have to ask yourself is, who is going to buy these tickets. IMO, Alan Jackson will be a great draw considering the target audience...

True, and I'll admit, I'm very biased towards country music. Since we're looking at it from a "football weekend" view and evaluating the population that will be in attendance, Alan Jackson is a fine choice and will fill up the arena.

However if we were to strictly look at it from a concert-only point of view, I would definitely say any one of the other acts I mentioned would have just as much, if not more excitement.

Do you really think any of those names would draw more people to a concert in Tuscaloosa than Alan Jackson? No way...

And just because a musician isn't at the top of the Billboard Pop charts doesn't mean they're irrelevant. AJ has been one of the most prevalent/popular country stars of the past 15 years, including recently. Just because you may not like a certain genre or an artist from that genre doesn't mean nobody else does ;)

I think the concert will be a great way to get even more people to come to A-day. I'm just hoping I can make it!

Personally, I am with you - I would rather see one of those groups than AJ.

But from a programming standpoint, either AJ or Montgomery Gentry (not mentioned in your list but listed on the website) would be the hottest ticket in Tuscaloosa.

Not trying to divulge my "secret" identity on here, but I was the Concert Director for University Programs for a while in the early 90s and know what does and doesn't work on campus. In short - Country works (sold out Reba McEntire). Classic Country Rock kinda works (90% house for Jimmy Buffet and for Allman Brothers). Pop/Folk/Oldies/etc don't (James Taylor at 60-70%). Hip Hop fails miserably (1,500 for Queen Latifah).

Since this is a contest whereby apparently concert ticket sales factor into a contest winner to get $1M for general scholarships, I say book something that will sell out quickly and get that cash into the scholarship fund.

Wow! I was already planning on taking the family up to Tuscaloosa for A-Day. Now this?! Cool.
What time will you be picking us up in H'burg on your way? :biggrin2:

Regrettably, mrs. exiled's place of bid-ness is doing all-hands-on-deck inventory that weekend. I'm relationally-challenged-male enough to go to Tuscaloosa anyway, but the other unfortunate coincidence is that it's mrs. exiled's birthday. Even I know that it's bad to leave her alone that day to go watch Spring training...It'd sure be great to spend the birthday weekend watching football in T-Town where we met, but alas...

If you have never been to a Alan Jackson concert....You guys just don't know what you are missing. I have been to 3 concerts of his over the years and they get better each and every time. He WILL pack out anywhere he is playing, I promise you that.

I'm not a huge country music fan, but I have been to an Alan Jackson concert. He kind of just stands there pretending to play his guitar. However, his band is phenomenal.
