I think this has been their plan all along. They interviewed a number of other candidates and will claim they passed on the job and that Freeze was their last choice but the right one for the job.
You may be right but that is a horrible plan. So their plan was to spend lots of money and time interviewing other candidates, be told no and get embarrassed/humiliated by your own fanbase, other fanbases and media. I guess that can't be more Barner like but I don't see that being the plan.

If it's true they've contacted him, it's because they are desperate at this point. I don't think they would have, had they been successful with any of the prior candidates. Freeze is still radioactive. I don't think even Auburn would have set out initially to hire him. Now, they are at the end of their rope and are apparently willing to go down this road despite the potential pitfalls.

It will be a spectacular explosion in the not too distant future, especially coupled with their radioactive basketball coach.

point is Auburn athletic department is broke financially and structurally
Do you know who this is?
And how he became Forbes 188th richest American in 2011?
Quote - made $1.7 billion for himself and billions more for investors in his Harbinger Capital by shorting subprime in 2007.

I wonder how he knew which subprime to short?

Bring it on!!! He’d have them under NCAA investigation.....and heavy penalties within 3 years!!!
He would fit in perfectly down there. Dye perfected the system and Freeze would benefit greatly from it.

Since awbern has no problem with Show Clauses, the only question is: Will Sankey allow it?

After an upset against their rival, the HC gets an offer from his home state’s flagship school. His agent plays the Auburn powers like Itzhak Perlman plays a Stradivarius, to the tune of a $49 million contract, 75% of which is guaranteed.

Two years later, after going 15-9, including wins over teams ranked #11 #17 and #5 at the times the games were played, they fire said coach. They will pay him over $21 million not to coach.

Given the above circumstances, the whole CFB world figures they already had the replacement in hand before axing the incumbent.

10 days later, after the following events, it’s apparent that was not the case:

One G5 coach turns down an offer because, “he‘s not sure who his boss would be.”

One OC with HC experience declines to interview, presumably because he sees the same thing.

Same agent, this time acting for a P5 HC, two time winner of the PAC 12, plays his current school for a raise and extension. Coach removes himself from further consideration.

Another G5 coach (different from the first one) turns down an offer because he wouldn’t have had full control over hiring his staff.

Now, they’re back to square 1.

You can’t make this stuff up.....this is the most Auburn thing in the history of Auburn. Beyond even naming the football field for a coach they had to fire because of NCAA violations.
Sounds like some of Bama's coaching searches and hires from Stallings to Saban. Even the Saban hiring was nearly derailed because some of the boosters/donors/board members wanted Rich Rod. Good thing Mal was able to get the guy he wanted in the end.

Apparently they’re going to hire someone named Bryan Harsin from Boise State. I’m sure he’s very good.
