Re: Assistant Strength/Conditioning Coach Placed on Leave

The standard course of action would now be that Alabama would declare the player ineligible, then the NCAA would hand down a penalty (usually a suspension for a few games) then the player can get back on the field.
I believe as long as it's <$500 and repaid the general stance is one game. If it's under $1K it's 2 games and above $1K it's longer. With Ga State, Kentucky and Arky next followed by Tennessee I would imagine the punishment from Saban will be more than the NCAA gives out.

Ironically, if this story is true, he got INTO trouble in the weight room and his punishment will probably take place in the weight room over the next few weeks.

I hope this is a one-off because I imagine HaHa might be reinstated if they show he repaid the debt but Harris is probably losing his job.
As long as this is a one player incident I think UA will be fine.

Finebaum just had a lawyer on and he said some have had 1 game for every $100.

Sounds like a stupid mistake, certainly not something that the fans should kill the player over. As for the assistant, I don't know anything about him. I am hesitant to just say that he should be fired over this mistake without knowing him or the details. Saban has all of the facts by now and is in the best position to decide. I would not assume that this guy is a cancer, loaning money all over the place, acting for an agent.
We may not know the circumstances surrounding the need for the money but I still maintain any player who has been in the system beyond their freshman year (I can give those first year guys a partial break due to age and lack of common sense :) ) should know better. With that being said, it is in-excusable for a coach to do this...if we think NCAA compliance is pounded into the players heads, what does that say for the coaches? If it was my decision..and of course it's not...I would have a hard time retaining the coach. Period.

IIRC, those sorts of punishments have come down when the player pays it back after getting busted - this case appears to be an -after-the-fact' case where Bama is dotting the is and crossing the ts. I'd guess 1-2 games, if any.

Maybe it's just me, but if I was a HC and even had a whiff that one of my assistant coaches had ties to an agent, I couldn't run him off fast enough. I just can't believe this is commonplace, or even tolerated, anywhere.
OK, maybe you went to school with a guy who became an agent, and you remained friends; even then, you are swimming in shark-infested waters. Any other scenario other than a family member is just friggin insane.

I agree, but these players can't know every detail of NCAA compliance - that list of rules is long and difficult to understand. If a coach offers to loan him money, with a real requirement of repayment, he could easily assume that this is within the rules. Of course, you wish he had asked another coach to be sure.

I do get what you are saying and in many circumstances I feel we overreact to certain things. BUT - with our history, I just can't get over someone on our staff even approaching that line. To me, this is one of those things that was probably done with reasonable enough intentions, but everyone knows it is against policy, and if it backfires, you are very likely out the door. There's just not a lot of wiggle room for this unless it was something ridiculous like $10 for Chipotle.

Agreed, but without that back-story, we have to trust that your coaching staff and compliance dept. will make the right call. I am just saying that this is a human being. Calling for his job without details is just wrong.

This coach couldn't have been making a ton of money. I imagine he's not the kind of person that can afford to lose his job. Which makes it all the more confusing why he would do something so stupid.

Even if you don't know the rule book front to back, any time money and athletes are mentioned in the same sentence, it should cause one to pause and question what they are doing.

I'll bet Coach bypassed the automatic door closer button and gave that door a good old fashion slam when the meeting with the asst. took place.

I agree - if in doubt, ask.
