I believe in Gene Chizik...and love him - of course I am an Alabama alumnus who is still laughing at the demolition of the Iron Bowl and the carnage around the barn football program - but still, good job, barn.
2008 National RankingI'm not convinced he's even a great DC. I believe he appeared that way at allbarn and UT because of the talent he had to work with, but when he had Iowa State talent to work with, not so much. And remember, at ISU he was in the notoriously weak Big12 North and didn't play any of the big 3 from the Big12 South. I'd give him good or maybe even very good, but not great.
Saban is honestly a recruiting genious in my book, the man is smart, hands down. The problem is going to be can the guy catch up on the recruiting trail? It's not like coaching alone can make up for it because it's been proven Alabama and staff doesn't have a problem developing the talent they bring in. Rumor has it that Turner Gill and several others "turned down" the Auburn job and I suspect this was part of the equation when deciding to turn down the job.
Right now Alabama is on a recruiting rampage that no one thought even Saban would accomplish this early. Look what the 2008 class has already done, several from the 07 class are developing into star players and the 09 class appears to be headed for a top five finish. Many thought Alabama had stumbled to depths that though it would recover, would not recover to the point of what it appears it has. I've more rival fans come up to me after the SECG and basically say " You SOB's, looks like y'all have returned. I never thought it would happen." Chizik has a rough road to hoe.
Now that is funny. I guess great minds think alike. After reading the title I say the same thing. The heck with Herbstreit, I approve of the Chizik hire.
Urban Meyer invented Gene Chizik, Herbstreits approval, and also your approval of Herbstreits approval.I approve of Herbstreit approving Chizik.
How would you know that? Wait a minute...you're from Orlando. CORSO, IS THAT YOU???? :biggrin2:I approve of the guy as well... cut Herbstreit some slack, he's secretly a 'Bama fan!!
Is going to be a long 3 years for the barners...Scarbinsky wrote an article yesterday mentioning he asked several other SEC assistants about Chizik being hired. One laughed out loud, another reaction was stunned silence, and another said that he was a good coach, but Saban would eat him for breakfast. (Memo to Gene - Saban likes his eggs overeasy and his whiskey neat....)
Note that they did not play Texas, Oklahoma or Texas Tech... they went 0-8 vs. the dregsOMG, this is unreal! If I were a Barner, I'd be on suicide watch. I know none of them that are even putting a positive spin on this hire.
