Why is the Indendence bowl in Shreveport considered a step down from the Music City Bowl in Nashville ? The Independce Bowl is 20+ years older, pays more, and having been to both Shreveport and Nashville numerous times, there's really not much difference in the two. Doesn't the Independence have a contract with the SEC and Big12. If Nebraska could beat Colorado and get bowl eligible, a Nebraska vs. Alabama matchup in the indendence seems like it would be a good draw to me.

Music is better because Nashville is a much bigger and nicer city than that stinking Shrevport.

I've never been to either city really, but I know several people who would disagree with you.

First of all, Nashville is not that much bigger than Shreveport,at last census about 150,000 more people. Which brings up another question, since the Music City Bowl is played at the coliseum in Nashville (home of the NFL Titans) which seats appro. 65,000 and the Independence Bowl is played at Independence Stadium in Shreveport which seats appro. 45,000, why does the Independence payout 400,000 more dollars per team?

You have got to be kidding me. The battle cry for years in the S.E.C has been "anywhere but Shreveport" Ask the players who have been the the Music City Bowl. It is a 1st class operation with tons of activities for the players and fans. RTR :biga: oops forgot to quote!!

"They brought us free drinks and we gambled and they just catered to us all the time".....

Technically, Shreveport is the size of Montgomery, not Nashville; they are not even close. Nashville is one of the 50 largest cities in the United States with a population around 585,000 (1.3 million metropolitan area) compared with Shreveport's city population of 200,000 (311,000 metropolitan area).

Those of us who have been to both places definitely know why Nashville is preferred over Shreveport. I like to gamble at the casinos (free drinks) as much as the next guy, but Shreveport is not where I want to spend New Year's Eve. Nashville is a very clean classy place and there is much much more to do there than in Shreveport.

As to why the Independence Bowl pays out more, I would dare say it's because they HAVE to. When you put Shreveport side by side with Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, Tampa, New Orleans, and Houston, I think it's obvious the best way to lure teams to the Independence Bowl is to pay more than the other mid-tier bowls. I don't want to knock Shreveport because I am just happy to be going bowling, but I was there in 2001 and I would like to go somewhere else this time around, so why not go back to Nashville?

Nashville over Shreveport -- It's Not Close

1. Nashville is an easy drive from just about anywhere in Alabama. Shreveport is forever away, and in the middle of nowhere. You just can't get there from here. Or from anywhere, for that matter.

2. In downtown Nashville, you have the warehouse district, a bunch of hotels, and the stadium all in easy walking distance of one another. Once you park your car, you won't need it until you head home. In Shreveport, there isn't much in the way of nightlife, other than the casinos, and the stadium is on the outskirts of town.

3. Nashville has Tootsie's.

4. The Independence Bowl used to be known as the Poulan-WeedEater Indepencence Bowl. My goodness, Shreveport, where's your pride?!?!?

5. Yes, Shreveport pays more money. But that money is going to the conference anyway. And with the way I understand bowl receipts to be divvied up, Shreveport would put about $20K - $30K more in BAMA's coffers than Music City. Within the context of an 8-figure athletic budget, foregone $$ therefore isn't enough to be worth considering.

6. Hmmm...Nashville vs. Shreveport, and you're wavering? You've never been to Shreveport, have you?

Amen!! Come and enjoy our fair city . We have lots to offer plus a multitude of Bama fans!! To compare Shreveport to Nashville is the same as comparing the barn to Alabama. ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

So, if we get invited to the Indepedence Bowl, we should uphold our crimson pride and refuse to play in Shreveport because it's beneath us? I think not. We should be glad we're going anywhere. The Music City Bowl is considered a step down from the Peach so Atlanta must be a better place to spend New Years than Nashville. I don't think so. I wasn't trying to compare Nashville to Shreveport, I was just saying that fans shouldn't look at playing in the Indepedence Bowl as being beneath us. As far as comparing cities, I would vote to go back to Hawaii. December in Honolulu is better than December in Nashville or Shreveport :biggrin2: But as with all other things pertaining to Crimson Tide football, I don't think they're going to ask me. ;)

Um I've got one thought for you guys, Shreveport is not in Tennessee. Truthfully I will not be going to the game if its in Shreveport and am considering changing my mind about going if its Nashville. The Music City Bowl is an 11:00 a.m. kickoff which means you have to get drunk at 6:00 in the morning it would also mean staying over an extra night on Thursday since kick-off is so early.

Stay home with your bottle. Happy Holidays :biga:

Now, as a paying fan and living in TN, I would much rather go to Nashville. However, if both the MCB and IB wanted us, I would have to say we need to honor IB. Why, you ask? Because they picked us over Ole Miss in 2001.

Hey Wuhpah that was kind of rude!

I'm simply pointing out that I pretty much hate anyhting having to do with Tennessee these days and an 11:00 a.m. kick-off sucks. If I don't go its not because I'll be at home with my bottle! its because I'll have to take an extra day off work, and I'll have to spend an extra days money on hotel fees, and coming on the heels of Christmas spending, and the 5 birthdays in my family right around now, money is a much greater issue. I never actually thought the Peach Bowl would take us unless we won a 7th game, but I was hoping anyway because money wise it would be great for me since its at night and I live in Atlanta.

My point is, our bowl situation will be decided by the powers that be at the university. We should take any bowl we get and be proud of our young men, especially after the things that happened this season. Some fans give the impression that going to a bowl in Shreveport is like a punishment and the drop-off in prestige from the MCB to the Independence is enormous. After NCAA sanctions, coaching changes, injuries and a 6-5 season, we're not in a position to diss any bowl.
