Is there a scenario where we still back into the playoffs?

Agree 100%. This is not a championship caliber team anyway, IMHO.
I agree with the sentiment that we aren't a championship caliber team, and that we can't really complain if we get left out. But beyond Oregon, is there a championship caliber team this year? I can make an argument for Texas, Ohio St, UGA, Penn St, etc. as to why they aren't championship caliber teams without stretching for reasons.

Well, if the CFP ranking are similar to the AP rankings....right now we'd be going to Knoxville again.

If they end up like I've got below, we head to Penn State.

1. Oregon - Big 10 champ
2. Texas - SEC champ
3. SMU - ACC champ
4. Boise State - highest ranked other champ
5. Notre Dame
6. Penn State
7. Georgia
8. Tennessee
9. Ohio State
10. Indiana
11. Alabama
12. Arizona State - Big 12 champ

Notre Dame splatters Arizona State
Georgia beats Indiana handily
Hopefully Ohio State and Bama win.
The order and potential matchups is going to change after the conference championship games.

Once the field expanded beyond 4, “champion caliber” got thrown out the window as a necessary descriptor for playoff contenders.

This is new territory. This is closer to the basketball tournament than anything college football used to be.

South Carolina, Miami, and Ole Miss are no more “deserving” than we are. And none of the previous rankings matter. It blows my mind anyone is referencing the rankings of the last several weeks. Frankly it blows my mind anyone is still watching anything but the final reveal that follows the conference championship games. That’s the only poll that counts.

You're right. When there were only 4 teams it always seemed there was one pretender who wasn't on the same level as the other 3.

and it will only get worse when the field expands to 16.

Right now, we are talking about 1 or 2 spots and about 5 teams.

With a 16 team field, those figures go up. And we are talking about 4 loss teams as candidates.

Maybe, maybe not. I could see this Alabama team going on a 4 game tear and winning it all.
Just imagine getting our 20th 19th national championship after everything that has happened this season! 🔥🔥

Edit: I lost count and consulted an AI chat site that told me the incorrect number. The current number is 18 not 19.

Let me throw this one out there:

In 2022, we had the whole mess with TCU (1-loss but not a conf champ) and Alabama (2 losses).

Do you think that if we had:
a) BEATEN Tennessee but
b) LOST to aTm without Bryce

.....that we make the playoff that year?

The committee could have plausibly said, "Alabama had a narrow loss without their Heisman winning QB, and thus there is every reason to believe as he is now healthy that they are one of the four best teams in the country" followed by the usual jargon of how many ranked teams we beat yadda yadda.
If they were going to apply any reasoning to it, they could have reasoned that we lost the Tennessee game on one of the most bogus PI calls in football history.

I could buy the argument of putting Ole Miss in over Bama, but not USCe. If head to head doesn’t matter, why do we play the games? If we’re only going on recent games, then start the season in late October since early games don’t count. That said, none of these teams deserve to be in, but there are others that are a “lock” that don’t deserve it either.
