Issues in Education

This always turns into trying swallow the whale conversation. Until we focus on the ones that want the help, encouragement and opportunity with adequate resources the results will always be poor.

The bottom line is most of these households there is sequential generational lack of self-esteem and that has proven inheritable. I dont think we realize what genuine focused care and attention can do for someone.
I think one of the problems is rather than the black community promoting education, the "ghetto"/"hood"/"Gang" life gets glorified and is made more appealing to the young people than education. I can see why though, the ghetto/gang lifestyle has instant returns and fruits where as the education route takes years before it's fruits are seen. But even still, there has to come a point where education is glorified and promoted over the life of drugs, gangs and violence.

My wife has started taking time out during the week to teach her 5th grade students basic social etiquette. She said it is amazing the number of kids who have zero social etiquette skills that apparently aren't being taught at home. A lot of it is just basic human respect for another person.

We as a society like to champion how much "smarter" kids today are which I think is very debatable. They may be "smarter", but they certainly have not advanced at basic respect and care for their fellow human being. My wife said some of the stuff they do and say and try to do and say to her would have gotten them long kicked out of a class when we were that age.

Only morons believe kids (in general) are smarter today.

More educated in some areas? Perhaps.

Smarter? Arguably less so. Smart phones and the associated short-form video addictions literally make kids more stupid.

Personally, I don't think they're any smarter. They have more resources than we ever did, yet so many have next to zero critical thinking skills.
