Re: J.C. Prospect Jamar Horsy To Visit

I'm not too sure about all of this just yet. Hornsby is a very talented player, but what is really the use of taking a JUCO player with character issues who has already been kicked out of one SEC program? Why would we really want to take the bad publicity that comes with taking a kid who used a dead woman's credit card?

Moreover, with Woodall returning and the rise of Mark Barron -- not to mention the fact that we signed two other safeties in last year's class -- why do we even need a short-term stop at safety? I just don't see it.

Again, he's clearly a very talented player, but I do wonder just how hard we are going after him. He says we have offered him, but I would really question if that is a commitable offer.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I imagine he will end up at Ole Miss.

I don't see how we avoid a HUGE PR hit if we took this guy. His credit card theft at Florida went on for months after the victim's death - a victim known to him. Her family even stated Hornsby helped them empty her apt. after her funeral.

Please coach, just say no here !

Umm, nothing in that article says that we are recruiting him now, and that would be the first I've heard of it even if we were.

"Alabama has offered me." Yeah, back in high school.

"I know Coach Smart well." Yep, when he was at UGA.

Call me skeptical on this one, but he was a talent out of HS.

I think we ought to avoid kids with perceived character flaws. I think character matters just as much (if not more) to Saban as on-field talent. The last thing we need is more "Alabama Football Player in trouble with the law" headlines, which we are hopefully overcoming.

Agreed, It is hard for me to believe that CNS would take on a guy like this without looking him in the eye and talking to him (to analyze his character).

That being said, CNS might have done so - and if CNS thinks that he has turned his life around, who am I to second guess his decision when I never even knew this player existed until I read this thread...

As the good book says ...

"Thou shalt reckon the severity of a student-athlete's transgressions in inverse proportion to the star rating Rivals and Scout assigneth unto him."

Not sure which book that is, but it sounds pretty good to me. :)

Seriously, I remember this guy signing with FL a couple years ago as a big-time prospect. Never heard what happened to him until now. Prayerfully he has had a transformation of his life and outlook ... and I assume that would be the only conditions under which he would be recruited by Bama.

All I can say is if Alabama is going after this kid then he must have gotten his act together.

I'd have to agree. He may have a "Cody Offer" where T.C. was told he'd get an offer if he lost 60 pounds.....this kid may have been told...."straighten it out....make the grades...and we'll give you a chance".

But I know we wouldn't go after anyone with current character issues.

Re: J.C. Prospect Jamar Hornsby To Visit

Count me in with RTO on this one...

There has been no evidence whatsoever that we are recruiting this young man, with the single exception of his statements saying that we are. And obviously, I think we've all seen enough to know that you cannot always take a prospect's word at face value.

Until we see some other, objective evidence that shows we are actively recruiting this young man, I don't see any reason why anyone should give any validity to this. Just take Elliott McGaskin's quotes from a couple of months ago... he says he has an offer from Alabama and remains committed and looking forward to reporting, and now he admits that there is not even a single school out there talking to him.

I imagine that Hornsby will end up somewhere in the SEC -- he really just has too much talent for someone not to take a chance on him -- but I don't see anything right now to indicate that he has a legitimate, current offer from Alabama, or that we are actively recruiting him.

You may be completely right. I just posted the link.
I had no idea the guy even existed.

I agree and I said so in the 2009 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List thread. This guy does not have a Bama offer listed by Rivals.com and he even says that he doesn't have a Bama offer in the most recent article about his Ole Miss visit in his profile.

Re: J.C. Prospect Jamar Hornsby To Visit

Just to wrap up the loose ends on this one ...

Scooba (Miss.) East Mississippi Community College DB Jamar Hornsby has committed to Ole Miss, Rivals.com reported. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound safety, who was a five-star prospect coming out of Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood, once played for Florida.

Florida coach Urban Meyer eventually kicked Hornsby off the team after he made purchases with a stolen credit card. Hornsby told Rivals.com he is trying to move on from the mistakes in his past.

Hornsby also reported scholarship offers from Oregon, Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky. The DB was just coming off an official visit to Ole Miss.

Good for him. I hope he stays on the strait and narrow while in Oxford.

You sir, are a FAR bigger man than I. I am disappointed in Ole Miss. It isn't like this kid used that credit card a couple of times and then said "oh hey, this isn't my card". He willfully took it from a deceased girl's home and used it right up until he got caught by the police. Idiot. His "second chance" should have come in the form of work release, not in a scholarship to an SEC school, regardless of his potential. Shame on him and even more than that, shame on Ole Miss.

Ole Miss is no stranger to doing this sort of thing. They have made a specialty the past few years in picking up transfers / last second de-commitments / problem kids, etc. Just look at the list... Jevan Snead, Enrique Davis, Brent Schaffer, some of the South Panola kids, and now this young man.

I don't have any doubt that he's a great prospect, and if he can stay out of trouble he will do extremely well at Ole Miss. And you can rest assured he will most likely give us problems. Nevertheless, though, I'm glad he's not going to be wearing crimson and white.

I believe in second chances and all, don't get me wrong, but somewhere you have to draw the line...
