Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

Well I don't want to have my post deleted, so I won't comment on Johns, his problem, or those who may or may not have known since the day he walked on campus...

What I will say is where ever there is a negative, there is ALWAYS a positive. And though our program, our coach, and our players will be drug through the mud for the 10,000th time since 2000 I can say it is no where we haven't been before. So we'll lick our wounds when its all said and done, move on, and HOPEFULLY!!!!!!!!!!!! learn from the mistakes of those before us.

So where is this positive I speak of? well that would be in a freed up scholarship, the way I see it #10(who doesn't even deserve to have his named mentioned on a Bama board IMO) just gave up his scholarship for Jerrell Harris, Don'ta Hightower, or Courtney Upshaw... Hopefully guys who will come into the program with their head on straight and not for take in the career path of street pharmacist.

Hopefully, every on our team can learn from this, it embarrasses me, almost to the point to where I was embarrassed to come here, I actually saw this on a non-football related forum and hoped it was some kind of sick joke, a quick redirect to BOL proved otherwise...

I'll just end this post now for fear of getting a time out and will finish with what my momma used to tell me:

"Son, if you are going to be dumb, you had better learn to be tough"

Sad and stupid. What the heck was he thinking? He just threw it all away, what a shame.

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

I sometimes live in a dream world, I guess..... Now, I know football is not played by choir boys. This is a sport played and coached by tough, violent men. But, I can't imagine someone so fortunate to be on a scholarship to THE University of Alabama, playing FOOTBALL for THE University of Alabama to not realize what he has and what opportunities that privilege grants...
Some people have "no raizin", I guess. I'm sorry, but I hope he gets what he deserves now. The other players, I will support till my last breath.

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

I would have them do the honorable thing and turn in their teammate for his felonious activity. Yes, he is totally responsible for his own choices, but aren't teammates also responsible for each other?

In residency, one of my peers was cutting and burning herself. The rest of us (five in total) got together and decided as a group that we needed to our program director and tell him about what was going on with our friend. We did and she got the help she so desperately needed. She was also removed from the program because she had no business being there considering her choices. I also took it upon myself one time to go to my supervisor and tell her about one of our other attendings who reeked of alcohol several mornings in a row while he was seeing my patients with me. He was my superior officer so I didn't feel comfortable confronting him directly about it, but my supervisor outranked him and was his peer. He went to rehab and has been in recovery for 12 years.

So, yes, I do believe others knew what was going on and chose to do nothing about it. I don't like that.:mad2:
Maybe they did confront Johns, we'll probably never know. All we know is that he's been arrested, he's off the team, and we won't be seeing or hearing from Mr. Johns for a long time.

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

As for being "lucky", I believe 10 or more "beans" is a pretty serious offense as well.
Ten pills gets you possession with intent to distribute. Nine or less just gets you possession.

While bouncing in a bar, I saw several people hauled out for dealing. Some of the cops mentioned that you could single out the dealers sometimes because they would leave the club frequently to resupply. They always ensured that they didn't have more than nine pills at any given time.

The cops would watch where they went after leaving the club. They would usually go to a car to get more pills. That would probably get the K9 unit on the scene fairly quickly.

I didn't know the cops had said no other players. That's good to hear. And SB, summer is not "no contact," like in recruiting. They are just not supposed to be actively supervising and coaching them. Something like this clearly falls outside that...

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

Isn't summer a type of "no contact" period between coaches and players or does this fall under some kind of special circumstances clause?
I could be wrong but as far as I know that only deals with coaching, i'm sure that Coach could record something and have a mandatory meeting and just have someone push play? I figure this is one of those gray areas.

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

BET, you may be correct about it's being a state charge. I was going on the fact that the DEA made the sting...
Again, I think that is right. I'm certainly not an expert on the subject, but it seems to be the case.

From all of the evidence that we have gotten so far, this was a situation where he had drugs and sold them in Tuscaloosa. That, in and of itself, should not invoke the feds.

However, it's quite easy to get the feds involved these days if they want to be involved. It's only an hour from Tuscaloosa to the Mississippi state line, and even as much as phone calls back and forth between a contact in Mississippi could be enough to turn this into federal charges.

If they are state charges, if he is under 21, which I doubt, he could get youthful offender and receive probation.
According to his profile on RollTide.com, he was born on June 19th, 1987... in other words, he just turned 21 a mere five days ago.

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

Given my young adult life, I am not in a position to throw stones at Mr. Johns. I cannot, however, laugh it off or suggest that my own guilt lessens someone else's. Every choice has a price. JJ will incur a steep price for what looks like a series of choices. Unfortunately, friends, family, teammates, fans, etc., will pay some portion (small or large) as well.

I can only hope for something positive, and I'm sort of grasping for that. When the bills started coming due in my own life, it forced me to do some soul-searching and life-changing. I pray that JJ will do the same. I also hope that those who know him will do a little self-examination--it never hurts any of us.

Unfortunately, even complete healing will still leave a scar, and won't happen without pain and time. This one's gonna hurt, fellas.

p.s.--thanks for sewing up the Clemson thread, TIDE-HSV...

Semeon Castille was on JOX about an hour ago & he was shocked at this, said he had no idea what JJ was doing.

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

Very good point.

Law enforcement generally doesn't care who is buying it for personal use, they are mainly concerned with those who are dealing it and where they are getting it from. From that perspective, it is a process designed mainly to go after the supply chain and not so much the end user. In that sense, they probably don't care who Jimmy says he sold it to, and that includes any possible players on the team.
Of course, though, that's not to say a player on the team could not have been involved with him directly, or that he was ultimately getting it from another source on the team. We just don't know at this point.

As you mentioned, all we can do now is hope.
Unfortunately, while law enforcement may not care, the media is gonna care --- big time. They're going to pound on this thing from every angle possible to see if they can dig up anything else on the team concerning this.

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

A buddy of mine just emailed me to remind me that coming out of HIGH School, J.J. held the title of Mr. Eight Ball for the State of Mississippi.....

All we know now is that he's gone.
I've defended him for a while now. Seems like I get my arse in a sling everytime I go to bat for anyone on the team. Oh well....

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

It's a long way from my field of practice, but I was of the understanding that the only time feds became involved was when the charge was federal or the local authorities need help and ask them in. This doesn't appear to me to be the latter situation, since we have state men who could have set the case up as well. For that reason, I think the charges will turn out to be federal...

Just another one of the 'cancers' from last years group of such. I think we all have heard rumors at one time, but I never expected anything close to this magnitude to come from it. What a waste of talent, his senior season at Brookhaven he was a man among boys on the field.

You may be right. As I said earlier, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see this turn into federal charges.

Again, it's just so easy for the Feds to get into this thing if they want to. Just because Johns may not have literally transported the stuff over state lines -- thus giving the Feds jurisdiction via the interstate commerce clause -- doesn't mean that they cannot get involved.

Again, all it would take is the evidence of one phone call where Johns contacted someone out of state to discuss the sale, transportation, or distribution of illegal narcotics... it's easy.

Again, if the Feds want to make this their case, it will be their case.

Re: Jimmy Johns Arrested

According to the latest report on TideSports, Johns has been kicked off the team by Coach Saban.

Nick Saban said:
Jimmy Johns has been dismissed from the team. This type of behavior obviously will not be tolerated, and he is no longer a part of our program.
As I said earlier, it's simply a deal between Johns and the legal authorities now.
