Jimmy Johns at QB

After JPW went down with the ankle, instead of letting Jimmy Barnes play at quarterback, they let Jimmy Johns fill in. This showed another dimension of the offense. The plays they ran with Johns at quarterback were very similar to a spread option game and it would be great to see more plays run out of this formation. Ray Melick wrote about this formation in the Birmingham News today. This formation gives defenses one more thing to think about.

I really like this. Our O has been real vanilla this year.Having Johns play the ''Tebow'' role will only help us.I hope to see more of this next week.Maybe he will throw a ball to Barnes;)

Of course, since everyone knew JJ was going to run the ball, he was tackled in the backfield twice.

shula said in his post-game interview there's pass plays that johns has in those situations. let them all think johns is gonna run the ball or hand it off. then boom TD pass :p

Then lets see them! I told all of you that if shula is sandbagging for Auburn or LSU then that's wrong! You play todays game first, and worry about the rest later. But if Shula decides to call a pass against LSU or Auburn and it goes for a TD i won't argue LOL

I think we had FIU in the bag...if CMS has something up his sleeve...I for one would not have liked to see it come out against FIU. I hope he's holding some things for the Auburn and LSU games. Not to say he's sandbagging but when you go into games where you will be a heavy underdog like we will be against Auburn and LSU you have to have something to pull out that the opponent hasn't seen. I think it would be idiotic to pull out all the stops and empty out our playbook against FIU.

This is a nice observation -- and one I would agree with -- although there are many posters who won't buy it.

I agree with not emptying the playbook vs. FIU.

BUT - I wouldn't mind wasting a play or two on a different formation or something that other teams would have to gameplan for.

Yeah, we are holding out on our great plays that will gain big yards, just like we did against Florida and Tennessee.

Perhaps early in the season before we play a big game, but not this time of year. Pure wishful thinking.

I think the plays with Johns were designed to do exactly what they did...fool everyone. JPW was not supposed to come out of the game because of injury...he was supposed to come out because we should have had a comfortable lead. Barnes was supposed to come in...along with Johns at RB...and we were supposed to play our 2nd string QB. This is what everyone thought...but I think the whole Johns thing was going to happen regardless...and we were going to run him at QB until they stopped us...then go with Barnes. Don't know if anyone else noticed...but all of that was scripted. Each play was picked during practice and it was pretty much a "see if you can stop this" type deal. I don't think Johns will be a regular part of the offense...but I could see this happening again against MSU if we have a big enough lead.

It's wishful thinking on your part if you think we will be vanilla when we play the Barn. CMS will pull out some tricks because he knows beating the Barn would quiet alot of the media lemmings and even some of our "so called fans."

Blahhhhh! Sorry I just threw up! :p

How about the Palmer role? You know a Bama reference to a skilled position player filling in at QB! Why add to the growing media frenzy of the demi-god known as Tebow?

There have been tons of athletic QB's before him. Heck I was more impressed by Matt Jones (ARK) when he was in the SEC than Tebow.

The JJ plays when he's at QB give DC's that much more to worry about because it makes the Defense accountable for all 11 players on the field. We have all seen how effective Florida has used Tebow in situations where the Defense keys on him and he completes a long pass and Bama can do the same thing with Johns because up until now, we haven't shown anything on film other than runs. I think that this week we will see a pass from Johns to one of our WR's. I got a feeling that Shula wants to give LSU and Auburn that much more to have to scheme against.
