JJ at QB

Can Jimmy Johns catch the ball, too?

I'm serious. With Prothro our coaches talked about "touches," as in he needed to touch the ball X number of times per game. They designed plays just to get him the ball.

Maybe we need to do the same with Jimmy Johns. Line him up at QB, run reverses, etc. The current strategy of "take snap, drop back, & take sack" isn't working.

I could see us having two starting QB's in the next couple of years...kind of like Watts/Zow. It really throws off the other defenses and they have trouble knowing what to prepare for. (ie. Auburn, 2001)

Good point

It's been a problem since the Ole Miss game. That's four weeks.

I don't see it happening with these receivers. Knight has a serious confidence problem. I know the coaches put the players on the field they think gives us the best chance to win the game but it may be that the guy who practices good may not be the guy who can handle the pressure in game day situations

While it's true they are young,( how many times have we heard that about our O line) but they've played in 10 games now and not much if any noticable improvement.

Except for Prothro, I can't remember any receiver making a catch that compares with the one Castille made on that interception against MSU. That's the kind of hands I expect our receivers to have when they play. None of them do, it seems.

what do y'all think, just for fun, about scrapping our pro set offense for the remaining two games, put Jimmy Johns in at QB and run the Nebraska power option game with LeRon McClain at fullback and Tim Darby at I-back?
JJ would not be able to effectively run an option offense. If you go back and watch any game film from this year, you will notice that he does best when he runs downhill... an option QB has to have great lateral quickness to be able to effectively run that offense. With regard to starting two QB's... I am NOT a fan of that scenario... might work with certain teams in offenses a bit different than ours but our offense depends solely upon a QB having great timing and rhythm... cannot establish it when you play every other series.

What about JJ?

I am not upset with CMS or the staff, but I do have a question. How is it that JJ's first carry is from the QB position for 13 YARDS, and then he never touches it again? Was he hurt? The first thing I said was that it was a set-up play for him to throw it later in the game..................but it never came. LSWho was set up & vulnerable after he carried it. Why not give him some touches & give their D a change of pace from Darby?

I agree - he made a fine run, too. Even though Coffee looked good when he came in for KD, I thought we would have seen JJ carry the ball a couple of times as a tailback.
On the CMS show last night, when they showed JJ in as QB, CMS said "Some people said he would never play QB at Alabama". Wonder if Sly Croom watches the playback?

What Coach Shula said on the CMS show about Johns

When they showed John's highlight during the show, CMS said, "Some said JJ would never play QB at Alabama." That was cool to let JJ run that play, even if it would have lost yards!

As far as two QBs are concerned, look at what has happened at UT this year with that philosophy.

Johns needs more touches though!

I loved the play with JJ in at QB. Was disappointed we didn't see anymore of him and GC either for that matter. The potential this kid (JJ) has is amazing from what I've seen so far.

A TRUE freshman, at that!

Thought GC looked a lot more fluid than he has in the past.

!!!!
I dunno, maybe our receivers weren't as good as we all thought, or maybe hoped they would be!

I can only hope that CMS and the staff are looking at ways to get JJ more involved in the game particularly on offense where we need a playmaker desperately. I mean, how many QB's (or other athletes) can play special teams, lay a hit on a defender & knock the ball loose, step in at running back, and line up at center & play QB? Admittedly, he hasn't thrown a pass in the college game yet, but we know the ability is there. How can this guy not get more touches? Not only that but he seems to be team player, willing to do anything just to play the game, no matter the role. Thats a future leader, IMO.

I think JJ is one of those players that'll prove to be a difference maker if given enough PT. I'd love to see him get a real shot at QB and handle the ball every play.

I've seen JJ play in person.

TiderinMiss....Home of the Arrow's right?...Have you seen many HS game's JJ has played in?
..Just wondering because I'm from MS and I've watched him for a lot of year's now.I did not or do not expect to see him take the snap much this year being a true freshman, possibly not a lot next year. However I do know what he's capable of and can assure the BamaNation that they would not be unhappy with the result's of JJ at QB......By no mean's am I knocking Brody's ability with this statement,he is a good QB in need of OL protection.

Yep. Clinton, home of the Arrows. We kinda stunk this year (youth, coaching change, etc.).

Clinton had a pretty good defense last year and made it to the semi-finals before Derrick Pegues and S. Panola knocked us out.

I was at the Brookhaven game. I'm a die-hard Arrow fan, but I couldn't help but to laugh out loud when Clinton had an all-out blitz on JJ, and yet, he would not only escape, but would get about 15 yards on the play!

He can throw, too...while running! That's what threw defenses off. You never knew if he was going to throw it, or pull it down and take off...mostly because, he knew exactly where the line of scrimmage was. That was no-man's land to him. I swear, his style was much like Vick's.
