Joe Pa's Comments

I dread the day when Joepa decides to step down. It will be a sad day.

I agree. I hate to see Jo Pa lose but I am very happy that Bama won. ;) I am glad to see that he was not as worked up about the loss as he was last year. I wish PSU the best of luck the rest of the season. They really are a class act.

It's not for any of us to say if/when Coach Paterno should retire. The man has his reasons for continuing to coach and the PSU PTB obviously have their reasons for continuing to keep him on as head coach. I can certainly understand the ambivalence the fans and the university feel about him at this point. They love and respect the man, but it's obvious that his presence is a liability at this point. I don't envy them their position, but I do wish for it to turn out as well as possible for them.

I was not trying to be a jerk about my previous comments that Penn State should give him the Bobby Bowden treatment. I only say this because I really believe there is no other way. How long after his last national championship was it before Bryant retired? 3 or 4 years. Up until that time he was putting together teams that were competing for SEC and National championships.

Imagine, if coach Bryant kept hanging on for years and years well past his ability to effectively coach. Imagine if you were a fan and seeing your program errode continually from a top notch program to a mediocre program. Imagine seeing highly touted recruits leave your state to play elsewhere because they don't want to play for a program that is not going to help them improve and be able to play for National Championships. That is what my Penn State fans up here are seeing. I honestly feel pity for them because Paterno is now creating an atmosphere where it is all about him instead of the players and the program. I know some Penn State fans that are giving up there seasons tickets because they don't like the direction the program is heading.

I would love to see Paterno step aside with dignity, but he himself is creating a situation where it is going to be impossible for him to do so.

Coach Paterno is one of the greatest, just like Coach Bryant. He'll step down when he decides to, regardless of what others think. The man has been a shining example of CLASS. His sense of ethics and integrity should be in a textbook. God has blessed him in many ways.

Life is more than just winning football games. The TRUE impact of coaches like Paterno, Bryant, Stallings and Saban is in the character of the young men that go forth in their lives after football.

If losing to Bama is reason for him to give it up then I think there is a lot of coaches needing to do the same.;) He may be not much more than a figure head but those guys still want to play hard and do play hard for him. That makes 2 sad coaches after playing Bama and counting!

You know there were a lot of people that weren't ready for Coach Bryant to step down. I'm sure Joe Pa has supporters that will continue to tell him to stick with it. Coach Bryant knew his time had come, I believe he knew in more than just coaching as well. I believe Joe Pa truly fears the same fate when he steps down, he's said so publicly. It's not so much stepping away from a job or a career like it would be for the rest of us. To him its stepping away from his life and he's not ready for that yet.

Honestly in the grand scheme of things what is a couple bad seasons? Just 2 years ago they were 11-2 and their fanbase is willing to endure a couple of bad years to let their legend go out the way he wants. 25 years from now they will be celebrating Joe Pa's career just like we do Coach Bryant's and no one will ever think about a couple bad seasons at the end of his career.

I guess I see it differently - it's hard to say if JoePa is over the hill, he just faced a vastly superior team.

:)

I think that's the point...his team was inferior because they had less talent, and the first drive alone showed terrible poise on the coaches' behalf. The captain of that ship is seemingly without steering at the present time, and this didn't just happen, it's been building for a few years.
This is not meant to be disrespectful of any older people, but when many folks reach his age they become senile, doddering old geezers (or crones). He physically can't keep up anymore, and really how far behind has he fallen mentally? Hard to say, but listen to him know and compare it to even 10 years ago, and the difference is noticeable.
He needs to put those shoes and socks in a box somewhere and retire...but I'll bet good money he won't. He will only leave if the pressure gets so intense it's either leave or get fired (aka BB), and I just don't see him quitting voluntarily, and they ain't gonna fire him. So I'm thinking (sadly) that the public may very well witness his actual passing.

This is waaay OT, but what I read in the paper did surprise me, inasmuch as it seems Bama fans were treated with a lot of respect before and during (and hopefully, after) the game. If that's generally true, hats off to PSU students and fans for showing class.

Joe Pa does very little coaching or recruiting. Truthfully, he should be listed as Coach Emeritus.

Well, yah - that's true of almost every other team in the country.

IOW, I don't know that PSU has dropped off that much. We're just quite a bit more talented than everyone else in the country with a couple of exceptions. Few coaches can recruit like CNS no matter what sort of tradition the school has.

you

I'm a big Joe Pa fan, but I agree he should step down. But how do you ask Joe to retire? Who would you get to approach him? What if Bear Bryant continued coaching and every year we finished in the middle of the SEC wining 6 or 7 games. How many years would Bear have lasted before he was forced out?

I think one of the greatest things Coach Bryant did for Alabama was decide to retire in Dec 82 when he felt he couldn't coach to his own (high) standard. He wasn't going to stick around and be responsible for 6 win season and creating the dissension over whether or not he should go.

He is going to make it impossible for another coach to touch his record lol. He is basically coaching in a coma. They just wheel him between the game and practice and as long as he shows up, he gets the win. Kind of humorous if you think about it.

He has always been grossly underpaid compared to his peers(his choice), so I guess this kind of helps him keep quality assistants to keep him as the Godfather.

When he does step down, imo, the Penn State job is going to be the primo #1 gig. They will have their choice of coaches. Beautiful stadium, fan base plus the tradition. There won't be the pressure of replacing a legend because he left the building with Elvis. It's time for the Don to step down.

I was wondering if maybe G Hall and Jay P were sitting just down from him. Maybe he could speak with them?

From what I could see, JoePa sits in the booth next to Jay Paterno & Galen Hall. He doesn't seem to make any decisions, at least not the times that he was on camera.

I think smart money would be on Penn State hiring Tom Bradley or Jay Paterno. Again, loyalty is quality #1 at Penn State, and that's not just toward Joe Pa. If one of those does not succeed Joe Pa, I would guess neither of them wanted the gig.
