It is funny how getting seriously hurt never even occurred to me at that age.

Nope - we built a ramp and jumped our bikes over the local creek. Had one friend seriously break his ankle making the jump once, and we were back out there the next day jumping again.

Of course, our parents knew none of this. We left home in the morning and were home in time for dinner. We could have done anything, and absolutely did a lot of things that we shouldn't have done at that age.

Kids, by and large, are no less fearless, but parenting has changed.
