JUCO Safety Jakar Hamilton Update (5/12)

No doubt. Like I said earlier, South Carolina has put far more DB's in the NFL than Alabama has the past few years. They've probably done as good of a job of doing that as any school in the country, sans perhaps USC.
BET, do you really think we would take a JUCO safety? We already have Nick Perry, and Jarrick Williams seems to be a pretty safe bet for this class at safety. I know they won't contribute for a few more years, but I think we have plenty of depth at safety. Woodall does graduate after this year, but Green seems to have stepped up to take one safety spot, and there are still guys like BJ Scott, Mark Barron AND Rod Woodson competing for the other spot. Usually JUCO guys come in to fill a hole, like Carpenter, and I don't really believe we have a hole at Safety.
I think you make a good argument, and I think you have a point to an extent. I do not think safety is necessarily a major need right now, and that certainly has to be a strike against Hamilton.
On the other hand, though, at the free safety position we really have no one else besides Robby Green right now. Scott should stay at corner, while Barron and Woodson are more strong safety types. Maybe the staff just does not feel comfortable of perhaps putting a true freshman in that role, and in any event Green is not a proven commodity just yet in his own right. Furthermore, it really helps Hamilton's case that he will enroll in December and get a big jumpstart on the 2010 class guys like Williams and Perry. Moreover, while we really don't have a huge need at safety, with that in mind we really don't have any huge needs anywhere, honestly. With as much talent as we've got in the past two classes, it's pretty much all gravy and taking the best player available at this point.
Like I said, I think you have a good argument, and you might be right. We might eventually cool on Hamilton for that reason, but by the same token we might think a JUCO safety can give us some legitimate value. Besides, perhaps the staff feels that Hamilton is one of those guys you cannot really pass on. We'll see how it plays out.
It takes at least 4 that are healthy front-line players. So, yeah, I could see a top-flight juco getting a look.
Our staff held out on offering him till they could evaluate him at corner, then offered accordingly. Perhaps you guys are looking at him in an immediate fill in for corner while the younger guys develop.
Also remember he played WR in HS when we placed in him GMAC, so maybe you guys are looking for some more burners at WR.

I think its more likely were recruiting him in the secondary. I really believe our WR corps is solid after last years class. Maze really stepped up in the spring and hopefully steps up in the fall, plus the great WR class we just brought in, with Bowman if he qualifies, Norwood, Kelly and Bell. And we cant forget about that one guy, #8 AKA Mr. Jones
it wouldn't surprise me. with our numbers so tight, and the SEC's stupid new rule, something's just gotta give.
He scheduled a press conference for June 27/28th and invited the UGA Rivals (no Bama/SC) press team, so I'm not sure how slight that lead is.
I'm starting to think you are right. I do find it interesting that Hamilton, as good of a prospect as though he is, is generating almost no buzz on any Alabama boards / blogs. Usually for kids we are going to get, everything is usually lighting up.
We'll see, but I'm not holding my breath at the moment.
I'm starting to hear things now where he said UGA was his dream school but they never offered when he got out of HS.
He has now pushed his decision back to Around mid July and said he would like to take visits to all three schools before he decides. Good news for both of our schools! :biggrin2:

Hamilton says that Alabama and Georgia are pretty much even. He is scheduled to visit Bama this weekend and afterwards he will be able to make a better comparison between the two.
