Can we please find a kicker?

I may be wrong but it seems to me that it has been FOREVER since we had what I would consider an "automatic" kicker - someone you felt could make a kick under any circumstances (i.e. Van Tiffin, Philip Doyle, etc.). It's a shame that the main reason we lost the game due to the fact that we don't have a confident kicker. I hope our coaches address this need in the next recruiting class.

Congratulation to LSU. They have a great team and they made the plays needed to win the game tonight. I hope we get another chance to play them in January.

Re: Kicking

Whatever the case, we've got no business letting Shelley try anything over 45. Nor should we let Foster try another one from that distance when he missed as bad on the first one as he did. Combo between player limitations and coaching IMO.

But then again Foster got high accolades out of high school too.

Re: Kicking

Had we punted those three times instead of trying FGs out of the kickers range, we would have had LSU in a long field and would have gotten the ball back in better field position thus being able to attempt shorter FGs.
This isn't on the kickers, it's on the coach, who I still think is the best, but Les sure keeps putting his name in the mix = (shish, what a thing to say).

Re: Kicking

kicking game was atrocious. if we punt instead of kick we win this game. they didnt just barely miss, they were terrible. 21 other guys put their bodies on the line and one guy who never gets hit can't do his job. sorry to throw them under the bus but they just lost the nat champ for their teammates. no excuses, they let everyone down.

Re: Kicking

I was just about to make a similar thread. Now that it's common knowledge, what can we do about our high school level kicking? Realistically, what can the coaches do?

Re: Kicking

The kickers were pretty bad but after the horrible 1st miss we would have been better off going for it on 4th and either making a first or moving LSU further down the field

Re: Kicking

Yeah, it was bad but you know they did their best and are dying right now. Give em a break. After Foster missed the second one, we should have punted. Bad call
If we didn't Punt our next option should be to go for it on 4th down, unless we are inside our 50. Our Kicking game was terrible.

Re: Kicking

When you have kickers that aren't so good long range, you PUNT!! Bad coaching call on ALL 3 IMO. As tough as our defense was all night, we should have pinned them down on the 1 yard line especially after that first missed FG.

If the offense, including the coaches, had done more things right, we wouldn't have been in long field goal range anyway.

UGH. So frustrating.

Re: Kicking

I'm not going to fault a college kicker for missing kicks from beyong 45 yards out esp. a 50 yarder. However, I think it's time we invest in a kicking coach.

I don't know about "automatic", but we sure put a lot of games on the shoulders of Christiansen in 06.

Well, with all due respect, their best didn't get it done. When your job's to go out and make a 53-yard field goal, you better do it. No other way to sugarcoat it. Our special teams didn't execute and it cost us the game. Say all you want about play calling and penalties, but you have to execute to win. And we didn't, especially in the kicking game.
