Jalen Hurts was 120% ready between the ears wrt to being Cool under pressure, but was probably 50% ready with Mechanics and reading Defenses etc.

He had Ice Water in his veins right off the bat and it's not teachable but It probably did stunt his development in the other areas by being rushed into Action.

Tua was 100% ready the second he stepped on campus.

He absolutely Torched our Defense in the off-season going in 2017

You could tell how special he was right off the bat in his 1st real action vs Fresno ST and then Vandy in Sept.

Gary Danielson and Brad Nessler were both blown away during the Vandy game.

Tua came in just ripping the ball. He threw a 35-40 yard TD to Jeudy on a rope over his right shoulder and before it was even caught you could hear Gary "What a Throw!!"

A couple drives later he runs a Zone Keeper just freezing the defenders and takes off on a 20 yard run.

Then a couple plays later is that 30-35 yard TD pass where he does a pirouette in the pocket and rips it to Smitty and hits him square on the 6 for a TD and Ness says he looks like Steve Young.
In terms of what he could do with the football and read defenses, yes, Tua was ready when he first showed up and was wearing a black jersey. But he needed an adjustment period to adapt to the speed. He was also a risk taker, and needed to figure out how far he could go with that. Didn't take him long to adapt. He should have started by mid season because Hurts was maybe too conservative and the pass offense was not cutting it.

Whether or not Russell is that good was the genesis of this conversation. We'll see.

Keelon Russell in the All Star Game. He drops some dimes and you can see how polished he is in the pocket. Got good wheels too.

BTW, injures his ankle around the 9 min. mark of the 3rd qt. His OK as I understand it.

From KR's interviews, he is expecting to come in, win the job and start. I just hope if it doesn't play out that way he doesn't decide to bail. Kids these days have exit doors for every situation in life that doesn't go their way. I don't expect him to do that if he doesn't win the job. But it does sit in the back of my mind.

He is going to have to be some talent to come in a beat our a guy that has been in the program for a while. Big jump from high school to college.

If KR wins the job I figure he will play but there are two reasons I hope this is not the case. For one his body isn't ready for SEC DL's landing on him. Secondly starting immediately leads to bad habits never getting fixed. That is what stunted Jaylen Hurts career. But if he's the best I say go with him.

As for the rest this spring there was a sizable gap between Ty and Mack but that was years ago in young man years. For Ty I figure he is going to either win the job or take a train out of town. Even if it looks like KR is going to be the guy I'd rather ease him into it in the fall and not just trot him out there against Florida State and just run with it.

High end talent has confidence through the roof. I guess that's a good thing he's thinking that right? Plus, it's the new normal of guys playing NOW.

He played 6A, big time Texas HS ball. He's been in big games. He's as ready as a True Freshman can be these days. He did well at the camps and all star game too!

Playing Devil's Advacate here:

1. His body. Slim doesn't mean not strong. Jayden Daniels at LSU looked like he'd break every time he got hit too, but he didn't. Plus, he'll add some weight before now and next fall most likely.

2. This assumes he has some of the weaknesses we assign to new QB and our memories are a little scarred with bad memories of young QBs like Hurts and Milfroe. Of course, he'll have things to learn and there will be growing pains but some guys are just naturally further along coming out of HS than others.

From looking at his HS film. His technique and fundamentals look very, very mature. Far better than JM's current ones. I wouldn't be surprised, based on some of those things, if his QB mind isn't slightly ahead of his QB body.

Projected starter: Ty Simpson

Analysis: The job is Simpson’s to lose. He has waited his turn and will have every opportunity to win it. The belief is that he can and will, but he won’t be handed the job. He will face competition from Austin Mack and freshman Keelon Russell. But heading into the spring, Simpson’s in pole position

I'm torn because I want Ty to win the job and be rewarded for sticking around, fighting for a job, and not transferring. That just doesn't happen anymore and is beyond admirable in my book.

But then you have this shiny new toy coming in with Russell that looks to be a future star. I would think that he'd be willing to sit this year if Ty wins the job. but what happens if Ty does win the job and plays really well this year? I doubt he'd play well enough to jump to the NFL, and I also doubt Russell would sit a second year behind Ty.

Well, TBF there will be a legitimate QB competition in the spring, not a false one as in the past two years...

I want to win. A true freshman is not going to be our best bet no matter how good he is as a freshman. It doesn't happen ever. Let Ty start and hopefully Bama has big leads and Russell gets lots of play time so he is ready as a redshirt freshman.

Hot take that will probably not be popular here, I'd seriously consider it and give Beck a call

Sounds like Miami may be the favorite for him though
Internet chatter says he got a 2nd to 3rd round grade and wanted to get away from Bobo. His girlfriend goes to Miami, so that is the most logical place. Plus, Cam Ward is leaving so a perfect spot for him to go.

Yup and they're willing to spend money. Still, I'd consider at least reaching out to him

I don't see any reason to do it. He is not that good. Not worth the money. And you risk losing your current QBs including the freshman that most on here want to give the starting job to before even seeing him in college.
Eh I disagree. When he isn't turning the ball over he's pretty darn good. If you can decrease turnovers I think you could win a championship with him
