Poll: Litmus test: Iron Bowl or Championship?

I am encouraged by the poll results. I suspect something like this would go over a lot differently on an Auburn message board.

It would be split, most likely.

Deep down, some of them know NCs are more important than IBs.

But right now, their coping mechanism is to talk about how the IB can't be taken away from them and they have state braggin rights. All true, except we have national braggin rights.

It's all about the championships.

I get a good laugh at how this year ended for Auburn. This had to be the most hollow Iron Bowl victory ever. :biggrin:

In the end, yes it was. Funniest thing ever too.

I had a conversation with someone who was crowing about their “state championship.” I said I would rather have 1000 national championship titles than 1000 state championship titles.

I just ask them how many games they lost this year...
Auburn wont talk about losing 4 games.
Then I remind them that because they won the Iron Bowl that they gave Gus a 7 year contract extension and a $49,000,000 salary. That's when I grin and tell them...

Me too but ONLY because it usually costs us a shot at the NC....this time though....thanks to the playoff existing... it didn't.

So they can roll all the trees with toilet paper they want.....meanwhile we are going through renovations to make room for more Trophies.

All my life I've heard people say they liked beating Auburn better than winning a National Championship. Well, the past two years give us a good test of whether you really believe that or not.

What say ye?

I have never in my 48 years on this planet EVER heard a single Alabama fan EVER say what you're saying here.


Not only that but the Iron Bowl, quite frankly, is all Auburn and nothing us. I'll paraphrase Rodney Orr as he was cited in Ivan Maisel's book about the 2000 Iron Bowl. For Auburn, beating Alabama means public respect and recognition - for Alabama, beating Auburn does NOT mean public respect, it's just a game we have to win on the path to doing greater things.

I watched an Auburn player quoted on a telecast - I think it was Greg Carr, but I'd have to look as names run together - saying that the big thing about the Iron Bowl was "winning the state championship." I've heard the ole "if we go 1-11 but win the Iron Bowl we had a great season."

I've heard that nonsense from Auburn fans.....I've NEVER in my life heard it from an Alabama fan.


It's one of those cherished myths like, "the Iron Bowl is the only game where 0-11 can beat 11-0." Hogwash. It's never happened. There have been MAYBE three upsets in the entire history of the rivalry.

Auburn is thrilled to win the IB - we're just relieved to not lose it.

A few years back, after the kick six, that question WAS asked on a barn site. The majority said winng the Iron Bowl was better. Truely showed how low their expectations are.
