These self imposed sanctions are suspected to be tied to the recruitment of Vadal Alexander as already mentioned in a couple posts. He signed with LSU in 2012. O wasn’t hired by LSU until 2015. This is a les miles transgression.

OBJ acts like an idiot. I’m glad he was banned. A friend who worked security at the NC game last year told me what one of his coworkers went thru dealing with him that night. Basically, he acts obnoxious and doesn’t think he needs to show anyone respect.
OBJ's Madden awareness rating should've been 0 because giving players wads on cash on the field in front of thousands of people in the Superdome has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

I heard on sports talk this morning that they were already under their scholarship limit by eleven, so they will apply the eight this year and basically have no penalty at all. I don't know about the validity of this, but that is how I interpreted the information on the Roundtable as I drove to work today.
There seems to be very little accountability in society today, so I doubt anything will happen to their football or basketball programs even though there is both video and audio proof of some of these things. We shall see.

That kind of shows how dumb they are for being 11 under to start with. It is all about roster management.

I wasn’t going to go there, but yes, we are waaaay under the limit this year with attrition and 3 opt outs. I have heard that it’s 4 each over the next two years. We can still sign 25 and only 25, but may not be able to make it to the limit so definitely there is some strategy here. Probably the most affected will be the 2 or so walk ons that get scholarships every year, that won’t happen while we are under these restrictions.

It's a smart move as it looks like LSU is taking this seriously and with LSU's desire to keep this and the basketball investigation separate, that could work.

However if the NCAA decides to lump them into one investigation (which I've read is what they've been talking about) then who knows where this leads. Eight is lot, but if it becomes obvious it's not going to affect the program, the NCAA will likely go beyond that.

Also, if they are treated separately then the loss of institutional control is a slam dunk for the NCAA. I hate the NCAA. You have to fight them, even when the evidence is clear.

From what I've read if they're treated together LOIC is the big issue - individually, they won't slap them with LOIC. This is why LSU wants them handled separately.

Treated separately means that they would already be suspended when the second case is finalized. In every other NCAA case that has produced more severe penalties. It is not like the football case ceases to exist. It would still be weighed in an LOIC decision.

ETA - but this is the NCAA, so who can be sure?

In this Sports Illustrated article from back in August, the thought was LSU and their attorneys want them decided separately.

4 over 2 years is nothing but, hey, it's more punishment then AU ever got, even if it is self imposed.
It's 8 over 2 years, right? 4 per year? But, if they are already under by 11 then it still doesn't matter much imo.
Could get really ugly if they bundle this with the basketball troubles too. LOIC? But, it is the NCAA, so who knows? Probably just let their self imposed sanctions be it and nothing else. I'm just ready for Saban and co. To go collect rent from Death Valley and slap em in the face with deed from Bryant-Denny since they believe "It is their house from now on."

The other violation received far less publicity, but is arguably much more serious. James Alexander, the father of former LSU offensive lineman Vadal Alexander, was found to have received $180,000 for a “no-show” job from disgraced booster John Paul Funes.

I realize we're in the age of Post-Cammy-Cam where nothing like this really matters, but that $180K figure is awfully close to what one lineman who never played for 'Bama supposedly received that caused us to lose 21 schollys and vacate a lot of wins and have a 2 year postseason ban and 5 years of probation and prompted one Thomas "Pompous" Yeagar to comment on our dire straits, "They were absolutely staring down the barrel of a gun."

I don't think an 8 scholly reduction is gonna cut it for LSU if fair is fair. They let OBJ on the sideline and he was handing out Benjamins. So, maybe equity for all these violations is a 40 scholarship reduction over 3 years? Add that to their hoops coach issues and LSU should be in extreme jeopardy of having to shutdown its athletics program, or in the words of Thomas Yeagar, "staring down the barrel of a gun." Not that I want that to actually happen, but, hey, I'm just wondering if past is prologue and if the 'Nfinitely Corrupt Athletics Association will uphold it's previously set standards of punishment?

Nah, probably not.
Agree, and they are in up to their eyeballs with the NCAA with their basketball program.

I don’t see how you have simultaneous major investigations of the two biggest sports and not have Lack of Institutional Control.

As many of the OFC will recall, it was a self-reported basketball violation from several years earlier that, because of a repeat-violator window, led to LOIC and the extremely heavy sanctions from the Dubose era.

Of course, NCAA logic applies, so there’s no telling what those morons will do.

What many seem to have forgotten about the Bama cases was that there was hatred between ex-members of the ncaa enforcement committees. Hootie Ingram was a target for having been involved with earlier investigations of Oklahoma as I recall. Eons ago.

I remember Hootie being the AD at Florida State before coming to Tuscaloosa, but didn’t know he was involved in the investigation(s) of Oklahoma under Barry Switzer.

Cant recall the OU prez name.....but he and Hootie were mortal enemies then. He took big interest in the Bama case of 1995 and 2000. I once had a lot of info in my head about all that because I kept up like it was a popular soap opera. Most things were one sided. AntiBama of course. Glad it is all about the game now.

I dont think there will ever again be sanctions like Bama's or USC's. Look what they did to Miss St back in 1977? I think a player got some free blue jeans at a store....and it cost them 2 years probation and no tv appearances back when teams were limited to only a couple per year to begin with. Not like today.

apparently the player in question for the $180K payment was Vadal Alexander ( 2016 Draft, Round 7)
this is what I have read,
the money was embezzled from a hospital by the booster then given to the father.
Booster embezzlement from hospital foundation reported as $500K.
