This should not be a surprise to anyone. Anyone who closely follows college football could see this coming weeks ago. The writing has been on the wall since the loss to ND.

Cold Pizza on ESPN was already discussing his successor, and that was at 11:30 this morning. That mentioned Steve Mariuchi (sp?) and possibly Nick Saban, if he is tired on the NFL gig.

...and he came in with such great promise...he was a good family man, good recruiter, projected a good image, had some quality wins and still lost his job... man it was a short and cold hard ride...

This sounds a lot like the Zook/UF incident. Zook was fired but was left to coach the rest of the season.

I don't know about the successor, especially Saban (who has already had the gig as MSU HC).

My question is, "Where is John L. Smith going to coach next?"
