Michigan State has called a press conference for 1:30 ET Wednesday to discuss its football coaching situation.

The Spartans started the season 3-0 under head coach John L. Smith, but have gone just 1-5 since. That slump started with a 40-37 loss to Notre Dame in which Michigan State squandered a 16-point fourth quarter lead.

This should not be a surprise to anyone. Anyone who closely follows college football could see this coming weeks ago. The writing has been on the wall since the loss to ND.

That's weird, they started the season 4-0 last year, including a win over ND and then faded to 1-6 the rest of the way.

Cold Pizza on ESPN was already discussing his successor, and that was at 11:30 this morning. That mentioned Steve Mariuchi (sp?) and possibly Nick Saban, if he is tired on the NFL gig.

He has been fired, but will coach the remaining 3 games. They will have to buy-out two remaining years on his contract.

This sounds a lot like the Zook/UF incident. Zook was fired but was left to coach the rest of the season.

I don't know about the successor, especially Saban (who has already had the gig as MSU HC).

My question is, "Where is John L. Smith going to coach next?"
