You mean like when Danny Woodsen went from a 10 to a 24? I imagine the test changing from left handed to right handed, or vice versa, didn't help either 
Going from a 16 to a 20 isn't a red flag in and of itself...
assuming he does graduate with a 2.6 or 2.7 GPA. If that's the case, you would expect him to easily make an 18 or 20 on his ACT. If his GPA were right at a 2.0 and he was just getting by, then going from a 16 to a 20 might give reason to look, but a 2.7 is very close to a "B" average and anyone with a "B" average should be able to score between an 18 and 26 on the ACT without question.

involves not completing a requirement for a course, such as research paper, etc. If it's a core course, the kid's sunk. It's not always 100% the kid's fault, either. Sometimes, teacher's egos get involved and the kid gets to be made an example...

A 20 IS NOT a high score on the ACT
Maybe I'm just paranoid when it comes to the ncaa and UA. I just see a potential there (16-20) for the ncaa to come in again and dig and dig again. I sincerely hope that is not the case.

I don't believe the NCAA has any standing to not accept an ACT score as long as it is certified. The ACT people will, however, do investigations in cases where there are significant score increases and can invalidate scores.
I didn't say that they have not rejected certified scores. I said that I do not believe that they have standing to do so. The NCAA bylaws clearly outline what scores are required for eligibility. If they are going to use the results of a test administered by another organization, and their bylaws state the minimum score required for eligibility, then they should be bound by that and the ruling of the testing organization should be final.

didn't understand your position. The comical aspect is that the Clearing House rejects test scores and also they reject grades, when they see fit. Last year, they said they were getting out of second-guessing HS grades, but the practice hasn't stopped. Except, of course for college grades at UT, where they say grades are none of their business....

Beat me to it! Bylaws mean nothing to the ncaa when they want to nail your hide to the wall on anything. Seems as Alabama fans, we should have learned that by now.

I know of several four-point jumps that have triggered action from the Clearinghouse. Marico Portis' score was flagged, and I believe his was just a four-point jump.
What the NCAA will do in that case is conditionally approve it. The condition being, you have to take it again, and if you come within a point or two of what you made the second time, your second score is validated. That's what happened to Portis.

I can answer one way you can do it ... being young , bored by classes and distracted by bright shiny objects around you . I attended high school in Florida , played football , ran track and was in the gifted program for students with exceptional talent .
In spite of the fact I had the ability to pass every class I took I failed so many in my junior and senior years the fat Star Trek nerd who only had academics to console him made a sacarstic quip in class one day about me not even belonging in the gifted program . The teacher in the class informed him I tested out having the highest IQ of anyone in the program which promptly shut him up :biggrin:
My point is this young man may have slacked a little on his schoolwork and it is easy to do if you are having your head turned by more "fun" pursuits . I absolutely loved reading and studying arcane subject matter but run of the mill turn in your paper classes bored the **** out of me . At that age I saw no reason to care what sort of mark a teacher put on a paper or report card .
I don't know this kid but from what little I have read he has made tremendous efforts to make up for his lost academic work . If he succeeds it will hopefully give him a different path in life than the one I had to take to get somewhere . I actually attended college after high school but found the bad habits I developed in high school followed me into college . I showed up for an English Lit class 3 times during the semester ... once for the fun of it and the other two times to take the mid term and final . My professor put on my mid term I had excellent insights and should try attending class more often . I CLEPed Western Civ and Psychology to avoid taking those classes but the damage was already done as far as my attitudes towards schoolwork went .
Having brought the bad habits I developed in high school into college with me , I ended up never taking another class after two semesters . It irked me to do what I felt was just busy work to kowtow to some professor who knew I understood the subject matter just fine . Little did I know how much busy work I would be forced to do later for people with fewer credentials than a college professor because of that attitude
I hope he sticks with it even if there are temporary setbacks because I think he will find the mental discipline he is developing working on his classwork will also serve him on the football field and in life as well . You can make it without college but it stacks the deck against you and like everything in life there are no shortcuts for most of us . Ignore your schoolwork and you usually end up paying for it somewhere else down the line ...
