Mike Leach FIRED according to ESPN

After Leach held the school hostage for his contract in early 2009 I am not at all surprised he is gone. My question is this, why did Adam James go willingly into the portable shed. No way on God's Green Earth would I go willingly into a shed (punishment) for 3 hours unless I wanted to. :BigA:

Not sure many on here have children. When a coach punishes a player for not practicing due to a concussion, I have problems with that.

More than 3.5 million sports-related concussions occur each year in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Brain Injury Association of Washington.

Concussions are serious. Why was James punished? Because he did not want to practice with a Concussion? Fact is the young man had a concussion. The school doctor stated that James had a concussion. The doctor also stated it help James by placing him in the storage shed. I do not care if James practice habits are not up to speed. The real question is James health.

It does not matter what practice habits James had. The decison to punish a player for not practicing with a concussion was stupid.

Hopefully they fired the school doctor as well. Talk about bending the truth.

I spoke to my Doctor here in Key West and ask him what healing factor did the the storage shed contain. My doctor just shook his head and laughed.

If my Doctor does not know then who does!

I think maybe it's time to fire a cannon or something down there...LOL
You might want to reread some of this thread...it has never been stated or even suggested the he was punished for having a concussion and not practicing.

I don't know enough of the specifics about the case with Mr. James to comment on it. But I will say that if TTU is in the wrong here, they will deeply regret it. For all of his quirks and weirdness in general, Leach is a fantastic offensive football coach. Probably one of the best around. Albeit, he goes about it in an unconventional manner, but anyone who can consistently take guys like Kliff Kingsbury and Cody Hodges and turn them into national passing leaders is doing one heck of a coaching job. I hope someone else gives the guy a chance, mostly because I'm curious to see what he could accomplish with better talent.

Being ordered to apologize does not equal due process. Maybe we misunderstood each other, but most employers have a process for firing someone for misconduct. At universities, I know teachers go before a review board (so I'd assume its the same for a coach); whereas day jobs might have a system of a written warning (or # of them), then escalating punishments until termination. This might've been resolved with an apology, but being told to apologize did not give Leach his chance to present his case (as required for due process purposes). That is my main issue with the Tech AD.

I highly doubt he walked into the Chancellor's office and the Chancellor said, "We have received this complaint. You must apologize." He was given a chance to present his case to the Chancellor, and the verdict was that an apology was in order. It doesn't really matter; he was given an order by his boss and he refused to comply.

Yes there was. Hance told Leach to apologize, Leach refused, and THEN he was suspended as a result. Sounds like this would have already been resolved if Leach would have done what his boss told him to do.

If you truly believe your right why should you apologize?
I will side with Leach for for holding his guns and not blinking because a family has a problem with discipline, Something the pre-madonna has never had.
In my business i see these type of people daily and its sickening to see what these kids have and how they act, Whats worse is the parents never see any wrong in their little angels no matter what they do or how they act.

Here is a link to the brief filed by Texas Tech against Leach. One of the exhibits is a letter which was presented to him during his meeting with the administration. I am a lawyer, and that meeting, or the opportunity to apologize to save your job is not "due process." I will save you all the litany of legal authority, suffice it to say that they came about as close to affording him due process as Tuscaloosa is close to Tokyo. Here is the link:

http://ftpcontent.worldnow.com/kcbd/2006/station/TTU_response.pdf

Also, I would point out that they demanded that he sign acknowledging receipt of the letter. That would ordinarily be no big deal, but the letter contained a bullet list of "guidelines" which he was required to comply with. He is smart enough not to sign, because he already has a comprehensive employment contract. Acknowledging those guidelines could have been deemed to modify his original employment contract.

You shouldn't! You should find another job. That's what Leach is doing now. You can't ignore what your boss tells you and expect to continue being employed. What the boss orders may be "morally" wrong for you, but if it's not illegal or disallowed by a contract, that's his prerogative as your boss.

There is a not-so-subtle distinction here that I think you are missing. There is a difference between punishing a kid for not practicing with a concussion; and disciplining a kid for a poor attitude. From all indications, the James kid did not get into trouble for refusing to practice, but rather, for showing up in designer shades and bragging about how he got out of practice. It has also been mentioned on TT boards that he was healthy enough to go out and party the night before he missed practice, but that is an unsubstantiated rumor at this point.

Regardless, the problem of slackers faking/milking injuries at football practice is probably as old as the game itself. I, personally, think the isolation in a shed/room was a brilliant way to ensure James was not milking the injury, while keeping him safe from any permanent injury if he was faking it. There were a substantial number of trainers assigned to monitor him. He was only told to sit/stand in a shed and/or room. If he didn't like it, he could have quit the team.

And what happens when you think he's asking you to do something illegal or disallowed by a contract and he doesn't?

lostinNala is making the best points of anyone in the thread because he has one of the actual documents in question and is a lawyer. (He also framed the argument perfectly for a politically conservative audience by presenting the incident as a matter of "our pc society" versus honesty and "the value of hard work and discipline" versus "these entitled kids today.")

If your boss gives you the rope to hang yourself with by asking you to sign a document that modifies your existing contract or makes charges against you that aren't true, then you should do exactly what Leach did in this case: lawyer up.

Is due process required in this instance? If they had a contract and TT felt as though he had breached that contract and they had a reason to fire him with cause, then allowing him any opportunity to keep his job is simply a courtesy on their part. Now, if he is not paid there will certainly be a lawsuit to follow, but that will never happen as this will be settled.

And let me just say that I am fully behind Leach on this one. But I think he gave them the rope to hang him, particularly in the pansy society in which we live
.

Sums it up for me. But it could be a pretty nice hanging. Say Leach gets 4 or 5 million and another job and Texas Tech gets another coach and more losing seasons. One party gets hung but the other party is the one sent to self-imposed purgatory.

Sent email to Gerald Meyers from TT alum.

Gerald,

It is unbelievable that it has come to this. Over the past year you have made a mockery of our Football program as well as all of Texas Tech Athletics. What is so obviously a personal vendetta against our football coach, has been unnecessarily put into the national news headlines and turned into a witch hunt. The fact that you have recently fired Coach Leach is mind blowing to say the least. Before Leach’s time, Texas Tech was a mediocre football program with almost no fan base. In the time that he has been there he has elevated the program to the National level, expanding our stadium, and has recently brought in new recruits that previously wouldn’t have even opened a letter from Texas Tech. And over what? We have all seen the pictures and video of the rooms that this spoiled brat was “confined” to and laughed. Everything I’ve heard and read from former players, coaches, etc. has led me to believe that Adam James was a cancer on the Texas Tech football team. I have played competitive team sports all my life and am not the least bit surprised to see how Leach handled this kids decent. Showing up to practice in street clothes and sunglasses when it is VERY common knowledge that players are to attend light workouts to continue to be with the team is disgusting to say the least. I can guarantee you that everyone on the field at that time was looking at Leach to see how he handled this in-subordination. So he confined him to a garage and a “closet”, which the whole nation saw was a huge indoor air-conditioned room, so what?! This is sports, he is your coach.

I read a story yesterday about Coach Urban Myer at Bowling Green on ESPN, the very same news organization crucifying Leach for his actions. When he first took his job at the school, 27 football players did not show up for a mandatory study hall, and his response? He called all 27 out to the football field that was lined with trashcans and made all of them run until every last one of them vomited from exhaustion. Was he fired? Absolutely not! Because in this sport, toughness is praised and insubordination to your coach is not tolerated in the least bit. ESPN praises Urban Myer for his toughness in this article, and then the next day destroys our great coaches name in the media because he was placed in a dark facility on campus? This stupidity is evident to the entire nation, and I am not the least bit convinced that you are this separated from this reality. You have made a joke and an enemy of yourself at Texas Tech and I pray that your horrific tenure there is short lived.

This is a sad and embarrassing day for Texas Tech, but especially for you.

Mr. Bailey, I appreciate everything you have done for Texas Tech and am a proud graduate, but we as alumni have had enough. I work with a number of people that are proud Texas Tech Alumni that just can’t believe what we are letting this man to do our athletic programs. From his public quarrels with Leach, to the National (please tell me why this was made public) headlines about his contract extensions, and now this. This man has spent the last ten years not only creating a successful football program, but GRADUATING talented and smart young men who have gone on to do great things. We all are at a loss for words. This will go down as one of the great disasters in Texas Tech history, just when we were on the BRINK of exploding onto the national scene. This man is a disgrace and we demand his resignation.

Another media member getting his information from ESPN. This time, a movie of the week Coach Stallings let us know was a farce.

Hopefully Leach's firing signals end to absolute coaching power

The Junction Boys would have never been tolerated in 2009. Bear Bryant would have been fired before the first player puked in the drought-ridden Texas hill country.Bryant's inhuman preseason training methods with Texas A&M 56 years ago were disgusting then and they're disgusting now. No water breaks in 100-degree heat. Only a fraction of the original 115 Aggies survived the brutal camp. Survived, as in made the roster. Bear's lucky no one died.

Actually, I think Coach Bryant years later said the "no water" idea was wrong, based on what he had learned since.

Yes he backed off several things he did earlier in coaching he tried to adapt to the times. He also came down hard on players when their hair was too long and would not allow the black players to wear their do rags on their heads he caved into both of those wishes same for names on the jerseys, white shoes and other things that used to put players in his dog house.

I completely agree that it was bizarre, but if putting a kid in a dark room gets you fired then I just wish my dad was a senator cause my Drill Sergeant did some things to me in basic training that should get them life in jail :)
I was thinking the same thing. You would never believe some of the things I witnessed as punishment for some of the guys in my unit (military). Even during airborne jump school, a drill instructor hit me in the stomach with his fist and I went to the ground in agony. The reason; I was standing in line with my hands on my hips. The guy stopped the whole training exercise, got the attention of at least 80 other soldiers as witnesses before he did it. When I got my breath back, I stood up and proceeded with my assignment. What he did was wrong, but he knew he could get away with it, and he did.

Based on what I have read, I can't understand what was wrong with Leach's action toward James. James was punished for playing mr. cool and trying to impress his peers with his special treatment. Leach had enough of his smart attitude and sent him off to the shed. This does not constitute physical abuse. He was not forced to participate in contact drills. He was not forced to run laps, do situps, or subjected to lashes with a whip. There was no streneous exercise involved in going to an air conditioned shed with a trainer present.

This is football we are talking about. Coaches have the right to discipline and motivate these athletes. Sometimes it takes hard lessons for everyone to become a team player.

I hope Mike Leach rips TT for tens of millions in a length law suit. They deseve it. If he keeps his Tivo on ESPN, he might want to take them to the woodshed in a court of law for spewing misinformation.

Jump school..........ah, the good ol days. Makes me nostalgic. Nothing like a good punch in the gut to make sure that you don't do it again.

Texas Tech player: Leach right to be fired, treated Jones like 'animal' | Texas Tech Red Raiders News | Sports News | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News

Defensive lineman Chris Perry, to ESPN: "I have no complaints about this decision. (Leach) put Adam in a shed like an animal. Like an animal in a cage. That was bull," . "You call other players. I think it was a good decision. We have our pep back now. We practice hard this week. We had less stress this week. You know why? Because he's gone."
Cornerback Taylor Charbonnet, to ESPN: "The players make this team, not one coach. As Adam's friend, I didn't like it at all what [Leach] did. He was my brother and I didn't agree with it. I don't know why [Leach] did that. But I know we our fully behind [interim] coach Ruffin [McNeil]. We love him and support him
