came in March of 1974 in Tuscaloosa, not with a 'BAMA team, but at Memorial Coliseum!! Bama could not go to an NCAA tournament that year because only 32 teams were allowed to go and we had lost the SEC championship to Vandy. We were excluded from the NIT because of a weird NCAA rule which kept any school which hosted the NCAA from playing in the NIT. Yet this was the year that I caught the March Madness bug. Those teams at Tuscaloosa that year were Notre Dame, Michigan, Marquette, and Vandy. Notre Dame played Michigan in the first game and Bama had just lost the national championship game to the Irish in the Sugar Bowl. Needless to say the Bama fans turned out in full force to cheer against the Irish. And the Michigan cheerleaders and fans were more than happy to yell ROLL TIDE at the top of their lungs. Michigan beat Notre Dame but I believe the Wolverines lost to Marquette in the finals. Any way you slice it, thirty years have passed by and to this day I remember it to be a strange way to learn about March Madness, with games at your home court and your own team not even being allowed to play.
