Yeah, our defense isn't Iowa State, Arkansas or Colorado.

The two QBs we were told would hurt us scrambling were the VT QB and the LSU guy. Snead also has hurt some teams running. Tebow is in a class of his own. He seldom runs far, but he's hell on wheels to stop before four yards and keeps the chains moving that way. We didn't stop him last year. We did this year. Mac falls between the extremes. He's no Mallett-like statue, but he's not a runner in the mold of McCoy. He's run effectively when he's had to and he's had pretty good pocket presence and has avoided a number of sacks. I believe he said that UT passed on him because they didn't feel he was mobile enough. But our running game, of course doesn't depend on him and what kind of day he's having...Bama will have the best overall defense we've played. I just haven't seen how ya'll have handled a scrambling QB. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just haven't seen the tape and Tebow just isn't the best comparison.
On the other side... TX toughest game on D was against a scrambling QB named Jerrod Johnson. What kind of scrambler is Mcelroy? Is he a statue? Is he good at avoiding sure sacks?

JJ for LSU was supposed to be good also. Of course we took him out of the game early...The only example I can think of a "scrambler" we've played against this year was Tyrod Taylor from VT. He had 10 totes for -26 yards and went on to have several good games running the ball for the Hokies. I think he has about 350 or so yards rushing this year and is definitely a great athlete.
Compare his number of sacks with uber-scrambler McCoy . . .
I think collectively, he and his OL are better at avoiding sacks than McCoy and his OL. The stats don't lie. Think about it this way, if McCoy weren't such a good scrambler, what would his sack total look like?
Before you throw out the fact that UT threw it 164 more times, consider that McCoy was sacked once per every 16 attempts, while McElroy was sacked once every 22 attempts.
Against the only two defenses that are even close to comparable to Bama's he was sacked a total of 13 times. In other words, almost half (42%) of the sacks he took for the season were against the only two defenses he faced that were ranked in the top 30 defenses in the country. That's an average of 6.5 sacks per game against top 30 defenses.
OTOH, McElroy was sacked 7 times (47%) - again almost half his season total - against the top 30 defenses he faced. The difference . . . he faced six top 30 defenses. That's an average of just over 1 sack per game against top 30 defenses.
So, is GM good at avoiding sure sacks? Not really sure; but I am very certain that our offense is better at avoiding sacks - period - than Texas. Especially against quality defenses.
You just called the game right there. It all comes down to that in my never to be humble opinion. We need some "strategizing". And to play better for 3 1/2 hours.
Hook 'Em

I like the ideal of going PA on the first play and not something short either, send Maze and JJ deep and let Peek run a deep slant over the middle.. Double edged sword to start a game though, an INT or a sack and we are on our heels from the get go so I too believe it will be no doubt a running play but IMO it needs to be right since we still seem hung up on the left side and I know they have been studying our film so they will be ready there.. I could be out of the box but a nice screen wouldn't kill us either we seem to be getting pretty good at making them work.....
I still can't believe the posts on here saying that texas will not double Julio. That is laughable.....and will be deadly for them, if true.
Patterson for LSU did a decent job on JJ (until PP started cramping up). I hope we see the JJ from that last Auburn drive.
PP is one of the best lock-down corners I've ever seen and even he relied on tons of uncalled PI...

Peterson was holding or committing PI on every play...Patterson for LSU did a decent job on JJ (until PP started cramping up). I hope we see the JJ from that last Auburn drive.
