BREAKING Nate has a new contract.

After striking out on everyone, UNC turns to former NBA Nuggets coach Mike Malone. This opening got raises for several coaches including Coach Oats.

When I first saw the headline, my first thought was who. Don't follow the NBA at all anymore so no idea who he is. Feels like he might be their Avery Johnson.

He won the championship in 2023 but got fired two years later with three games left in the season despite a 47-32 record.

I guess hiring a championship winning coach worked out so well for the football team they decided to try it in basketball.

I just can't imagine the long time UNC fan is happy with how this transpired. I'm pretty sure when Davis was fired they thought they'd end up with a much higher-profile college basketball coach.

They mentioned Billy Donavan from the NBA and Brad Stevens, but I really think they thought they could cherry pick CNO, Vandy or TT's coach.

There are many NBA “insider” types that don’t expect Malone to be in Chapel Hill long term. Most believe a couple of years max before he is back in the NBA. Malone just seems to many an odd fit and think Cunningham settled on him after his primary targets said no. So Nate’s name could come up again there in a few years if Malone heads back to the NBA.

Given Coach Oats success in Tuscaloosa, his name will come up every year as a candidate in high profile jobs, both college and NBA. As a fan I’d rather be in a position of “trying to keep a coach” as opposed to being in a position of “needing to fire a coach”.

The arrogant entitlement of UNC basketball fans makes Alabama football fans look positively humble. UNC absolutely thought they could get anybody they wanted from any school or NBA team. Just throw out that Carolina blue jersey and they'll grovel, slobber, and crawl over broken glass for the job.

Example #7,864,981 of, "If you're going to fire a coach, you best have at least three candidates who (1) represent an immediate upgrade from what you already have, and (2) will realistically come.

That last part meaning that they have expressed interest through backchannel communications. Not just that they'd listen....they have to be actively interested.

This is a cautionary tale for anyone who says, "Fahr heeuz sorry carcass!" Fans, radio show callers and talking heads who say DeBoer will be on the hot seat if we don't make the playoff this year: I'm looking at you.

The question for any frustrated big-time program in any sport is, "Who not named Anybody would you get who both represents an immediate upgrade, and will realistically come....as opposed to leverage the interest from an elite program into a big raise."

Unless you have a totally overmatched coach (e.g. DuBose or Shula at Alabama, Gerry Faust or Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame, Sherrone Moore at Michigan), that list is going to be really short. It might not have a name on it.

Be careful who you fire. If you do fire a coach, you then have to replace him.

I compared the hiring of Malone to our hiring Avery Johnson. I stand by that statement. I look forward to them losing to Norfolk State in the NIT.
