But given the pairing of political correctness in today's armed forces and the Tea Party's adoption of the snake and "Don't Tread On Me," I'm surprised at both the choice and its approval by the brass....because I guarantee you it was.

I have seen the motto expressed both with and without an apostrophe, though I have never seen the flag with the apostrophe. I wonder if there is a reason, or if this is just one of those mistakes that became tradition.
