New coach search...

For those of you that are more in the know, will we know if Marshall turns it down or will we find out by the announcement of another name? Still hopeful since there has been no news that I's are being dotted and T's crossed for Marshall, but just curious.

I have a hunch that word will start trickling out one way or another by tomorrow morning if Marshall will be the next coach or not. Usually one side or the other starts to leak some information to the press and it will spread like wildfire. Having said that, I'm not going to be concerned if we don't hear anything until Monday evening. It it stretches out that long then I will start to think that we may have to move on to plan B. But I have no inside information, that is just my gut feeling and is based on how previous coaching searches have played out.

What I would love is for this deal to be done by Monday, and then Marshall be a guest commentator on the Final Four broadcast.

Marshall is the guy with a proven track record of taking college level skilled players

That is what is holding him back. He can get the mid level players now that will stay at least 3 years but yet still win the conference. Those type of players wont take you to a deep run until they are generally Juniors or Seniors. That is why most mid-majors this time of year are very deadly, lots of experience. At Bama and the SEC, Marshall can now get those 4 stars and possibly the upper tier 5 stars now because he has the name recognition and a big time conference to back him up. That is why Marshall left Winthrop and possibly why he will eventually leave Wichita. He will always have good teams there but he'll never win a title there. At Bama he gets a huge raise and a possibility of having that dream of winning it all. Crap, even Gottfried could bring in pretty dang good talent and he sucked......lol

I may be wrong, but I don't believe that WSU could even match 3 million. I really would like to know what UT offered him last year. I'm going to guess in the range of 2-2.5 million. Neither of those ADs can begin to keep up with us, dollar-wise. I just hope we can offer him more than money...

I'm thinking the same thing. I don't think he makes more than 2.5 even with the Koch brothers. I could see them going to 3 but I don't see them matching our 5 million offer IF that is true. While I think that is about a million too much, if it gets him here then I'll be happy. But to almost double your salary (once again if true) and have a bigger recruiting base with a state full of pretty dang good players he will be tempted without a doubt. We have better basketball in this state than people think. Imagine some of the lower tier names coming out of h.s. that ended up at decent programs, imagine Marshall keeping them in state to go along with a few blue chippers. We would be winning games for sure.

If the Koch brothers were going to shell out large sums of money for the sole purpose of keeping Marshall at WSU they would have already done so.

Like I agreed with HSV above I agree with you as well. People still forget we are talking about Wichita State here. They will up his pay some to hopefully keep him of course, but there is no way they can come close to what we would offer. Yes the Koch brothers are filthy rich, but you honestly think they would shell out 3 or 4 million a year tops of their own money to go along with all their other donations just to keep him? I don't see it happening.

Well, I see we will have some competition seeking a new coach. Tennessee has fired their head basketball coach, so they will be beating the bushes to find a replacement as well.

As others have said, UT will be no threat to us money wise.

Whatever we offer him, I hope that it is not only enough to lure him away from WSU, but enough to keep him here long term, kind of like we did with Saban. Our BB program needs stability and total rebuilding, which takes time. $3.5-$4 million sounds like a lot, but in the scheme of things and given the size of our war chest lets be honest, it's not really that much. We probably keep that much in the petty cash drawer. I would not want to have to worry about losing him every time a big name 'basketball' school job opens up. Let's get him AND lock him down with a generous long term contract.

3.5 to 4 is about what I would expect Marshall to get from us, but if it takes 5 to get him here then so be it. But he better realize at 5+ people, students, fans, and the school will expect results immediately at that price.

Looks like the official announcement of Rick Barnes' firing to come tomorrow. Top two candidates rumored are Smart and Marshall. Gary Parrish of CBS Sports touting that, in his opinion, Marshall would opt for Texas over Bama at this point.

I say put the best offer you can on the table (if you haven't already) and give Marshall until tomorrow morning to decide.

I am seeing that as well...there is a lot of talk of Marshall to Texas out there right now, hopefully that's just talk.

I have to wonder whether Texas fired Barnes because they knew Marshall wouldn't be there much longer . . .

Three things Bama can offer that Texas can't

1. A commitment to developing championship-winning programs in all sports, with a recent history to point to. I don't think Texas can claim recent national championships in 5 or 6 different sports.

2. Complete control of the program like Coach Moore gave Saban. With no interference from administrators or boosters. At least Texas can't say that with any credibility. Or, a straight face.

3. The exposure that comes from the SEC network. The Longhorn Network is a COMPLETE joke in comparison.

If they want Marshall, they should make him the best financial offer they can, point out the facts above and let the chips fall where they may.

I agree. Texas would only be the better job due to the talent and not having to play UK. I don't think Tejas will pay what we are paying if that rumor is true.

I really want Marshall, but Shaka Smart would not be a bad plan b at all. I think Marshall is the safer bet, but Shaka should be cheaper (I imagine they'd offer around 3 million), and a little less demanding. The main issue here is that Alabama has to force Marshall's hand. They can't afford to wait around for Tennessee to get their guy, and be stuck in a bidding war. Well really they can, since Barnes is available but obviously for a few reasons that's not particularly desirable (although ironically it might yield the best results).

The main thing Alabama has going for it is they have proof that Texas will absolutely, without a doubt meddle. If Marshall wants to be left alone, he knows where to go.

I think "control of the program" would be a huge factor for any coach with Marshall level status.
I can't imagine him taking the Texas job, especially the way the boosters do seem to try and interfere and utilize their influence.
The only way they'll get him is if he's ready to leave and it's all about the money.
I really don't perceive him as that type of person.
sip
