New coach search...

Some give the impression that if we fail to get Marshall we'll have to "settle" for someone else, like it's failing to get John Wooden and having to "settle" for David Hobbs. That ain't the way it is, by a long shot.

That's all I've been trying to convey. We're not the University of Desperate, we're the University of Alabama.

Say what you want, there were three top tier coaches available at the time, Marshall, Howland, and Smart.. looks like two of those three are gone and smart may not want to leave. Everyone else on the list is not proven, just a guess, maybe they are good maybe not. Just like our last hire.. And Barnes is a no.. as i posted earlier in 28 years of head coaching 3 reg season championships and 1 conference tourney championship... that is as mediorce as it gets.

Also, as much as people complained about CAG not recruiting big men, why does no one mention that there that Archie miller's starting 5 @ dayton has no one over 6'6... sorry venting been a long couple of weeks.

Okay laugh at me if you will but, if we are out of the running on Marshall, I wouldn't mind Bobby Hurley. I know he has only been in coaching a couple of years at Buffalo but he comes from a basketball/coaching family. The guy was a tough as a two dollar steak as a player.

I'm still waiting to hear what Cecil Hurt has to say about these latest developments. Some of the stuff being thrown up against the wall may be truth and some it may be something else....

Just to point this out, Barnes is 60, there's no way he's possibly the long term solution. But, if Alabama is faced with, say Pitino or Barnes, isn't that an easy choice? Barnes in terms of what he's done is a lot like Wimp Sanderson, a lot of NCAA success, not a whole lot to show for it, but that's still far better than anything Alabama has done lately.

The worst thing Alabama could do is make a desperation, Mike Shula type hire here. If they have to "settle" and get the abrasive, old, go to the NCAA tournament every single year guy, who is old enough that he'll likely retire if he struggles... that seems like a good way to buy time while Alabama gets a new AD. I'm really not sure that I understand what some people's priorities are when it comes to hiring a coach, this isn't a lifelong friend, this isn't someone you're going to go to church with, and in the case of Barnes, it wouldn't be someone to coach the team for 20 years. You don't need to like him, and Alabama has far more to worry about than winning the SEC.

Right now Alabama needs to figure out how to go the NCAA tournament, I think that should start with a guy who knows more than how to get an automatic bid...

Because 2 of his big men were allegedly involved in an on campus robbery, and he kicked them off the squad. I'd say it's actually more impressive that he took that kind of a stand against 2 players, but also that he got as far as he did with what he had. Any team who pulls away Miller from Dayton will be extrememly lucky. The man is one heckuva coach.

That is your opinion and that is fine, but Barnes put the horns in the dance 16 of his 17 years. I would gladly take that at Bama because frankly I am tired of the NIT.

Per Wikipedia, "In nine of his fourteen [NCAA Tournament appearances] at Texas, the Longhorns went on to lose to a lower seed..."

I realize that entry is slightly outdated, but if that's not underperforming, I don't know what is. Maybe he's the best we can do, but if so that's paying neither of us a compliment.
