New coach search...

Real funny...NOT. If you think Bama is getting a top tier coach, you are living in fantasyland.
I choose to live in the real world.

It was not meant to be funny, but rather out of frustration. And it was not directed only towards you, as others have expressed similar sentiments.

I am not saying that Marshall is the end-all-be-all. But he's an excellent start. I just don't want the drop for Marshall (if he says no) to the "lower tier" guys to go from home run to infield grounder. In other words, I don't want our administrators and boosters (i.e. Battle and comany) to have the same mentality as the one you and several others have expressed.

Lots of folks thought that the Saban to Bama talk was nonsense. That fans that thought it could happen were looney. That Mal Moore was on his last leg. I don't care if the Saban analogy is overused. It is a fact. It happened. Regardless of the circumstances. Fantasy became reality.

Based on the thought process of some of us fans, the RichRod of college basketball would just be OK. Just swell.

I want better than that. And it appears that Battle does as well. And that's good news.

I would take Mike Anderson as well but I think he just signed an extension in Arkansas so I'm betting like Crean he will cost too much IF Bama even wants him.

I seriously doubt he'd come here even if offered. He has Arky going now and they would match anything we'd offer. He has a better arena and has stocked the program with good players who fit their style of play which is why Arkansas right now is a better job than ours. It won't be in 3 or 4 years, assuming we make a quality hire, but right now it is. I would have loved to have had him 6 years ago though. I believe he is a pretty good coach and kids are attracted to his system.

Rama, I wasn't saying your post was ridiculous. I was saying that, to me, it would be ridiculous for us to pay Marshall more than MSU pays Izzo. He doesn't have an Izzo quality resume. He has an outstanding one, just not Izzo like.
Sorry for not making myself clear.

I think pay will make Bama an attractive basketball school for the future. Let's make Izzo "underpaid"!

I didn't think you were. We are going to have to pay a premium to attract a top level coach and I think everyone realizes that. We are not UK or Kansas or UCLA. Izzo money is essentially a penalty for making poor decisions about our previous coach. We've run our program into the ground where we can't even beat Vandy. Perception is everything. If we truly want to compete at the highest level, we are going to have to pay top level pay. I personally hope we don't negotiate another golden parachute( big buyout if we fire him) in his contract until he's proven he can put us on the top level. Grant is getting more than he deserves now.

Speaking of Rodriguez, remember Mal offered him the job and it was turned down. Mal didn't lose traction, panic, and go DOWN the list to offer someone who he thought would take the position. Mal turned up the wick and went UP the list and got Saban. Everyone pointed and laughed that Bama couldn't get anyone to take the job, RR had turned them down. Next they were pointing and laughing that Saban was a pipe dream and would never leave the NFL for UA. Who's laughing now?

Not saying that will happen if Marshall spurns Battle but that is a good example to follow and something we should be aware of. A brilliant move by Moore and UA that could be re-visited. Doubtful but possible considering the dollar amounts that are being thrown around…damn near anyone will listen when that much money is involved and if they'll listen it can happen.

I agree 100%. I was all for hiring Anderson when Grant was brought in but that ship has sailed.

SIAP, but Bama will soon have a need for a new AD also. Just so happens there is a person at WSU that would be a prime candidate. Could he be a factor in all of this?

If we don't get Marshall, everyone will laugh at us and say he didn't come because all we care about is football. He will become a media darling for turning down the Evil Empire and their blood money.

If he does come here, he is a whore who walked out on his team during a possible Final Four run and sold his soul for the almighty dollar.

We can't win.

I don't think so. Shaka Smart has turned down numerous Power 5 schools and it hasn't made that much of a difference in how he's perceived.

No one said Grant was a whore when he left VCU for us did they?

What about when Larranaga left George Mason for Miami?

What about when Miller left Xavier for Arizona?

This kind of thing happens yearly, I don't remember anyone ever being called a whore for money.

This thread is 54 pages long already. Yeah Alabama fans don't care about basketball.

If it were a PBS pledge drive that had "persevered" at this length, 'Bama would have enough money by now to hire Izzo and Marshall as coach-in-waiting...

So, if this is the case (no win situation) should we just give the job to Brannen?

I don't understand the anxiety of trying to hire the best guy available!!!

All Battle can do is try, and it appears that's what he is doing.

Some of yall act like the University is trying to spend your money.

Ditto!

There are others that can be successful at Alabama.

As of this morning ;) I'm here -> I like still like the plan of going after Marshall, win & WIN, lose and call Mike Anderson at Arky and a$k him to come home. Fail on those call up Shaka Smart and say, "sorry dude, I know it looks like we courted those dudes but we really didn't, we wanted you the whole time" lol fail on that and prolly $teal the UAB coach. Fail on that - Intern Brennan, there ya go, there is my BATTLE plan.

They are spending my money. It is the money I spend on season tickets, jersey's, 6 dollar coke's, etc.

We get who we get. I have my preferences, but in the end I just want someone who can recruit, promote the program, and develop players. If we get a coach with these traits, we'll be successful regardless of what the used car salesman on the other side of the state does good or bad.

UCLA and Tennessee among others have been rebuffed by Marshall, so we would be in pretty good company if he did turn us down. What is the harm in Battle making a full bore, all out run at him for the Alabama coaching position? It's like asking the prettiest girl in the class out for a date. You don't know what she we will say unless you ask.

And what would be wrong with a no? Nothing. Perception? Who cares? I would be more concerned about the perception of knowing we had the resources available to make it happen and didn't make the effort to make happen. THAT, to me, would be more troubling.

"Well Alabama had to settle for their second or third choice." Big deal. I've probably been in situations in my life where I was the second or third choice. It didn't necessarily mean I wasn't capable of doing the job or being successful. Heck, I probably wasn't my wife's first choice, but hey, thirty years later we are still here and going strong.

There have been thing I've said or done over the years that I have regretted. I can live with that. However, it is things I DIDN'T say or the things I DIDN"T do that tend to haunt me the most.

Just like with Mal and Saban, Battle is probably thinking this hire will define his brief legacy as AD at Alabama. Might as well "ask out the prettiest girl in the class". She may just say yes.....

Well.... technically speaking, if you SPENT your money WITH THEM, it now belongs to THEM. :p

This, and who here (honestly) has ever been involved in hiring (and decision making) on this elite level??? Multi-million dollor contracts???

It's not my job to worry over this...got enough on my plate with my own concerns.

Anybody hear Marshall on Mike & Mike this morning? Here's what he said:

"I'm not just a guy that's always looking to bounce," Marshall said on Wednesday. "My agent, my attorney said 'You're just not a jumper.' We like to go and get our program and culture established and get the right type of people to be coached and enjoy our daily existence. Enjoy going to the gym. Enjoy going to film study. Enjoy going to the office. Enjoy getting on a plane and a bus with these guys and that's what we do.

"So it would be hard to walk away from happy, but that doesn't mean you don't ever move."

Marshall also touched on the importance his family has in making a decision when larger schools come calling for his services. He has two children, a son and daughter, that are both currently in high school.

"After nine years, we finally find the right situation and we think we found the right situation at Wichita State and this could be a destination job with what we're doing and what the administration is doing and the way they support us and our crowds and all of that," Marshall said. "So I don't worry about it. It's always a family decision for me."

His inconsistency in what he says seems odd to me. Yesterday, he was honest and said "I'll listen." Today, he says he's not a "jumper." Comes across as him playing us.

He also said, "...that doesn't mean you don't ever move." This is consistent with what he has always said.

His consistent message has always been - I'm extremely happy where I am but I will listen to good offers. His players understand this and have expressed support.
