New coach search...

He got outcoached by Pat Riley in the 2006 Finals (don't let the haters crying Wade foul conspiracies fool you), but overall I think he could be a great college coach. He seems like he'd play well in recruiting because he was always a top-tier lockerroom guy for NBA teams.

Pat Riley has out coached quite a few guys in his career.

Name an NBA coach that Pat Riley faced that he didn't out coach.

The Mavericks were cheated in the series. That was evident. Wade had 33 free throws in one game, LMAO. He still might have got outcoached however.

Avery tweet by Hurt this morning was a sly truth I see.

It is an outside the box move, but I think NBA coaches understand how to break down defenses better than a lot of CBB coaches. I like the move.

So how do NBA coaches know how to do that better? Just curious to get some insight.

I'm not the biggest Avery Johnson fan, but I think him being here would raise our profile for sure and I think he could be a pretty good coach. I like the move so far, guess we'll see!

Yep, all good points. I'm a lifelong Laker fan so I've seen him do some amazing things with the Laker vs Spurs rivalry. I think he might be good and I have no concern that if he does great, he might head back to the NBA. I'll send him a huge thank you letter if so. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't one of the first to send his resume to Bama. He prolly sees what we see, he's no dummy. College, NBA, head coach, and TV guy, he has alot to offer.

A bit of a risk, but one I can handle. A much better option than Prohm or Pitino. If hired, he needs to hire a veteran assistant to help him transition to the college game.

I didn't really full form that thought about Riley v. Avery Johnson. I shoulda added that there is no shame in that and in fact Avery Johnson led those teams to some great seasons but had some bad playoff showings at times. Of course, I think their playoff failures were problems exacerbated by roster issues with covering athletic wing players.

I like Avery Johnson if for no other reason that he brings an NBA background and his broadcasting career has kept him visible with potential recruits. He has some "brand value" so to speak. Definitely not top flight brand value but more than we'd get from a mid-major up-and-comer. He can coach good enough and probably would relish being more a teacher in college than a manager in the NBA.

Wow I didn't think Avery Johnson would consider coming to Alabama. I think he's a really good coach and he is well respected at ESPN and the NBA. Would bring a lot of positive exposure to the program..

He's struck me as an honestly good guy as a coach and analyst. He'd be a good face for the program but he's never been a college coach before...there will probably be some learning curve. It will win the press conference though...and that is a start after a seemingly message-less Grant tenure.

This I can agree on. I hope he can change his coaching style and micro management.
