it's sickening that college coaches get paid this kind of money. it's sickening that they get paid as much as shula. there is no excuse for college coaches making $900K a year or more...there may be economic justifications...but there is no excuse.
no college coach should be paid more than the president of the university at which he coaches. i'm a HUGE college football fan, but it's gotten totally out of hand. you have world-reknowned medical researchers on college campuses who are curing diseases and they are making maybe $150K a year while some schlub like rich rodriguez (WVU) makes $800K to win 8 games.
every year i think college sports becomes more and more putrid...and the inflationary spiral of coaching pay is just a symptom of the disease.
the selling of players, the corruption of the ncaa, the corruption of the coaching ranks, the misleading of young men who are treated like chattel...it's almost becoming too much to handle.
i watched the d1aa playoffs closely this year, as my undergrad alma mater went the distance, and one thing i noticed was that almost every one of those kids had a real major...accounting, education, business, pre-med, and so on. they all know (and knew going into college) that their careers will end after college. they are really students first and athletes second. the further down you go to the dII and dIII ranks, the more profound the difference gets.
on the reverse, kids who get recruited to bama, UT, Texas, etc are deluded into thinking there is a future in professional football. they major in stuff like "athletic coaching" and "leisure studies." there are cadres of criminals running around every major athletic campus and rarely, if ever, are they expected to answer for their horrible behavior. they get spoon fed and passed along from one class to another...then half of them end up without a degree, almost all of them end up with no pro career, and many sit back and wonder "what the hell happened?" and it goes on and on and on.
the whole system is pretty disgusting...and like smack junkies, we keep coming back.
anyway, there's my rant for the day.
