Probably a guy trying to build a mailing list for spam. When you followed the link he placed, the url had been disabled, probably for scam/spam.

I did have a private message from Serendipity - I thought it odd and deleted it without clicking the link.

I ain't exactly new - but my post count is low.....

In his/her message it simply said - Hello I'm new blah-blah, with a link attached.
