Next year at QB?

Since it's slow, I figured I'd throw out a question about our future QB situation since I'm sure it will be a hot topic this time next year. Since we are due to replace Brodie, what is the general feeling about who is going to take over the reigns as #1 on the ol' Bama depth chart? I am assuming that JPW is the logical answer since he handled alot of the snaps with MG during the Spring but what about our 2 new Freshman coming in and our other QB on the roster, Adam Thrash? What do these kids bring to the table? Anybody think they got the talent to at least see some PT this year to get some experience or is a redshirt in their future?

On a sidenote, I hope that we at least get to give JPW a good taste of the SEC in some mop-up duty (crossing my fingers that Brodie makes it all year) before we throw him to the wolves next year.

Don't expect Thrash to see playing time. On MG, he hasn't been practing with the players this summer. (IE: Skel drills)

JPW is just a logical assumption, it's a fact. He's our #2. Spencer knew it, MG knows it. In fact, there was a transfer from Michigan State looking at Bama the last few weeks and knowing he was going to see anything better than the 3's he decided to go one of the smaller schools (can't think of which one).

I think we're in pretty good shape talent-wise at QB, but I sure hope that JPW gets a lot of PT this s4eason. In a back-up role, of course. I also hope that JJ and JB are fast learners.

The Michigan St. QB is probably Stephen Reaves. He was once the starter at MS and I believe he is transfering to Mississippi St.

i think we'll see four QBs play this year. BC, JPW, JB, AT...
I think that only happens if someone gets hurt. IMO, only three will play. Brodie, JPW, and maybe thrash a few snaps here or there in a laugher (like against Utah State maybe). But I think CMS will want to redshirt the other two this year and let them at least get a whole year in the offense before playing in a real game, plus it will give them a Spring Practice, a luxury JPW already has had.

I'd REALLY like to know what the real story is concerning Marc Guillon. Any of you guys care to divulge? Speculate?
The only stories I've heard is what I've got off the rumor mill, and I'm sure most everyone has heard all the same stories I have. It does seem kind of odd that he wouldn't be participating in the passing drills this summer. What I do know is that if Marc isn't available this year our backup QB's have a grand total of one spring training for experience (and maybe a week of practice prior to the bowl game). Hopefully, Marc will be ready to go this fall. If nothing else to pass along some advice to JPW should the need arise. Not to mention it'd be nice to have the depth so we could actually start redshirting some of these highly regarded freshman such as JB AND JJ.

The MG story is a very sensitive situation. Based on that, it's not something that we are going to be the "news breakers" on (as far as TF.com is concerned). That is all I can say...or better put, all I'm willing to say.

The talk of Thrash seeing the field is just talk. It ain't gonna happen.

My hope is that our staff learned some valuable lessons last year about QB's...
1. don't have your starter in a 31-0 mop up game (critical mistake).
2. have another QB getting some snaps in a game cause if #1 goes down you better have #2 and #3 ready to play (last year #2 and #3 looked lost when they had to step up).

Having said that, I think JPW is a quality QB...he will be a quality QB...he will not get us beat...the kid is nothing but a winner, I seem to recall Bama having several QB's like him in the last 40-50 years...JPW should get a lot of playing time this year and whoever is #3 needs some too...I recall Coach Bryant always having his second and third team players ready...he played them all the time so if someone went down the team never missed a beat...learn from the master!

mobility is what we need

I think JPW is a good Qb and will be a Jay Barker type(wont get you beat). In my personal opinion the game has shifted so much to having a mobile QB with D-Lines and LBs being so fast, that JJ will as of what we have now be the future QB. JB also looks good and from what I hear has a rocket for an arm, but he is not very mobile. In todays game un-mobile QBs unless you are a Matt Leinart type are just sitting ducks. The threat to run will always help you keep those DL and LBs thinking. Just my opinion. let me know what you think.

During the off season it would be interesting for our O staff to visit the Titans and pick Norm Chow's brain. He would be an ideal sounding board for JB not being a mobile QB -- Chow did rather a fine job on Carson (first name) and Leinertwho are not mobile QB's as far as 3 step drops and quick throws.

well... i don't count on BC making it through the season so...

the reasoning is that with JPW being your starter by midseason, you need to get your #2 and possibly your #3 QB some work before 2006. otherwise we're back in the position of 2004 where your backups are totally lost if not just really scared.

JB is most likely going to be the back up for JPW in 2006. Knowing that, you would think the coaches would like to get him some playing time in 05. i don't see AT coming in unless (God forbid) CMS wants to save both red shirts on JJ and JB or there is an extended mop-up duty in one of the lesser games. then you're back in the 2004 position again because your walk-on was playing when your intended backup for 2006 (JJ or JB) was not getting any experience in 2005.

--- on the other hand, you can gamble that all of your QBs will stay healthy and your noobie QBs will step on the field and play like Joe Willie in 2006 even though they've never had a snap. i just don't like that kind of pie in the sky thinking... especially with the string of bad luck BAMA is in.

I know there's some behind the scenes stuff going on with MG and I don't blame TF at all for not touching that issue.

As for Adam Thrash, isn't he a scholarshiped player? Seems like a waste of one is he isn't even looking at PT this year. I wonder if thjey could move him into another position?

Why is everyone so high on JPW? He has only played in a spring game. Not trying to flame him, but if he was so good, why did he only get a greyshirt from Bama? Lets be realistic, if he was such a great catch, somebody would have been after him and at least offered him a full scholly. Lets not try to make him something we WANThim to be, lets see what he can ACTUALLY do first. I would bet that next year his status as the starting QB will not be a given.

Maybe he will be the diamond in the rough, but only time will tell.

I heard the other day that Jimmy Barnes has lost close to 20 pounds..if so, then he will be more mobile after all....he's got a cannon of an arm...I hope to get to see him play for Bama soon
