I "almost" feel sorry for you guys, I can't imagine going through that every year, I guess if there's one benifit of Shula having a losing record, we certainly don't have folks sniffing around our campus for a head coach. The prognosis is another tough year in 05 so the recruits we are bringing in have a pretty good chance of having Shula shake their hands upon graduation, that seems to be a rare thing these days in college coaching.

LSU's Saban meets with Dolphins for 'preliminary conversation'
LSU coach Nick Saban met with the Miami Dolphins about their opening Tuesday night, the school announced Wednesday morning.

"I owe it to the people of Louisiana and the fans of LSU football to let them know I have had a preliminary conversation with the Dolphins to exchange ideas about their head coaching position," Saban said. "No decisions were made in this meeting and they will continue their search for a coach. I will continue to be committed to LSU, our football program and totally focused on our bowl game versus Iowa."

It is rare that a school and coach would admit preliminary contact with an NFL team at any time but especially during the sensitive recruiting period. Saban's departure could cause upheaval at one of the nation's powerhouses. It could also cause arguably the most high-profile opening yet in this offseason that has seen 14 schools change coaches.

I'm not flaming you TexasTigers, but that statement bothers me. Especially after a national championship.

I do feel for the Tiger nation though. Like bamaslammer said, I would hate to go through this every year. But if Shula had an identical resume at Bama as Saban does at LSU, I just wouldn't say "give something back." He has given LSU football quite a lot.

Just my humble opinion/observation.

This is true its not official, but the LSU fan base has grown a bit weary of it all. I know I have.
He may stay, but sort of like the husband who cheated, it may never be the same after the 3rd year in a row. Recruits see this.

Nothing to feel sorry for us about, We have a great program, 2 SEC titles in 4 years and a BCS national Championship. LSU will survive, the sun will rise tomorrow. LSU is bigger then one man.

IhateUT, no offense taken, your are very true, Saban gave us alot in the Tiger Nation. I guess my point is, LSU and its fans are sort of tired of dealing with this. I guess I live in la la land and think that maybe just once we found our Bobby Bowden or Bob Stoops, our coach who has maximized LSU loves LSU and wants to be there. I guess I have to realize Saban does not look at LSU the same way I do. I mean he got everything he asked for. LSU did what it could I guess to make him happy, I guess thats all you can ask.

Saban to Miami

To me, it's a mistake on his part. He has everything he could want at LSU, facilities, staff, recurits, great pay, a community that loves him, what else could he want?

I know it's the NFL, however in my opinion, College is much much better!!!

You are correct that LSU is bigger than one man and don't forget that. Saban, if he goes, will have left LSU better off than we he first got there. I know your feeling about "I guess I have to realize Saban does not look at LSU the same way I do." I am the same way. I don't understand how ANY coach could not want to either come to Alabama or stay at Alabama. But that is like a parent not understanding how someone could not like their child. Saban has NFL ties and I guess I can understand why he would want to give it a shot. I REALLY hope this is not a play on his part to get more out of LSU after all what more could you guys have done. It will certainly hurt your recruiting even if he stays. Finally, I am going to start the rumor that Tuberville is the leading candidate for the LSU job.

NOT OFFICIAL!!!!!!!!!! How many times do we have to go over this. It is only official when Saban/LSU/Miami announces that Saban is leaving.
No, it's not official. But the way the process works means that it's pretty much a done deal. When you're already a gainfully employed HC, you don't get on a plane, or interview for a job, or "meet with" officials from the suitors unless the deal is all but signed.

TexasTigers, I feel for ya man. But look on the bright side... Saban has built a pretty good program there, and it will be attractive to top coaching prospects all over the country.

I have many friends who are fans and alumni of LSU and almost went there myself.

Ramah - You are correct

TUBS !!!!! NOOOOO !!!!!!!!!

The LSU fan base would Riot...

I would look out for Butch Davis... If Saban leaves, Butch Davis will be who skip goes after, they did before they hired Saban.

Maybe we can get Hallman back ;)

Remember on two separate occasions Bowden expressed an interest in and a willingness to come to Alabama. Stoops has at least listened to Florida during their two most recent coaching searches. These days I don't know if any coach is that loyal. But in many respects I don't blame them, most universities will dump them on a minute's notice if they start losing. So they have to look out for themselves first and foremost. Joe Paterno seems to be the last of the old breed to me, and that poor guy needs to retire now so he can still preserve some dignity.

Still a longshot? I doubt it.

ESPN's "experts" still are reporting that Saban leaving LSU is a "longshot." I just wonder why anybody believes that considering that Saban and Miami officials met for hours at an undisclosed location in Dallas. I doubt they were filling up the time by watching the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King extended version DVD.

Nick talked to Atlanta last year. The year before it was Chicago. He has turned down overtures form the Bengals and the Browns and Notre Dame. He already has a NC in his pocket and will certainly leave someday, but he ain't gone until he is gone.

Talk is cheap. It keeps his NFL options open and keeps LSU in the mind of paying him top dollar. The NFL will always be there for him. He doesn't have to take any offer that isn't everything in the world that he wants. And nobody knows what Nick wants from the NFL or if they are prepared to give it to him. He's already got everything he wants from college football.

He definitely won't go unless he gets total control of the program. Not many NFL teams are willing to give control of personnel and operations to the head coach. But Boston did for Belicheck, so it could happen.

After all Nick is a can't-miss coach -- just like Steve Spurrier! ;)

As a Tiger fan I have been hesitant to particpate however its official Saban is probably leaving us for the Dolphins.

He is interviewing with them...

Frankly, I have grown weary of this every single year and hope he goes to the NFL so LSU can move on. I know thats a shocker but thats how one LSU fan thinks. I love Saban he brought us to the promise land but its time for him to either commit to LSU or get his NFL job he seems to covet. 2 years now he has interviewed with some NFL team. Professional Courtesty ??? Fine how come other coaches how are content dont do that. LSU gave him everything he wanted, highest salary, new facilities... you name it. I thought maybe just once he might give something back. I guess I live in la la land...

I don't blame you one bit. That "who wants to outbid for me" crap gets old. I'm personally glad Fran is gone, and while I was concerned with Shula's lack of HC experience when he was hired, at least we got someone who we don't have to keep upping the ridiculous amounts every year to guarantee he stays.

Now, before you flame-throwers start hurling your brimstone bombs, that is not meant as a knock on Shula's coaching ability, at all. Rather, it's nice to know we have someone who is dedicated to sticking it out through tough times and believes in committment than trying to bail to get the better job.

I hope LSU finds their loyal leader, too.

I think Coach Saban's NFL background is a little deeper than Spurrier's was before he made the leap into the NFL.

On the loyalty issue Texastigers hit on, I agree 100%. You want a coach that wants to be at your school for the long haul and not a fly-by-night. After watching the fRan debacle unfold, I too wanted a coach that would come in and plant some roots and Mike Shula fits that bill to a T. Mike Price, on the other hand, I had my doubts about so I'm glad he went to Pensacola last year. However, it's a fine line because the moment you hit the skids and start putting up some L's, you run the risk of landing on your unemployed arse despite you commitment to the school.

Atlanta radio is reporting that Saban met with the Dolphins last night and that the Dolphins and Saban have agreed to talk more. They also stated that Saban is their #1 target and both parties are interested but Saban has not been offered the job yet. This seems to have more legs to it than being just a rumour.

TT,
I feel for you guys but atleast Saban is being upfront about it unlike a coach that will remain unnamed. I do feel that your program is is much better shape now than when he came in and you should be thankful for that. I am a Bama fan that would prefer that he would stay because I believe that to be the best you have to beat the best. I want the SEC to stay strong and believe it will with some of the new coaches coming in. Losing Saban will hurt in the short term but if the right person is hired, the damage should be minimal. Again, be thankful that he is not lying and saying that no talks have been made and then he leaves in the middle of the night without warning. Atleast this way, if he does leave, Skip Bertman will be informed and will have time to look for the right candidate.
Good luck.
