Questions about these two paragraphs.
There was a Sporting News article a little while back with Chitty saying he was a huge Florida fan and if they offered he was gone so what makes you so sure he is a Bama lock now? Also I guess we are recruiting him as a receiver correct?

Also Robinson said he will wait until NSD to choose now. So if he waits do we get Cox and let Robinson go to UGA?
A couple of quick replies...

Chitty will take interest in Florida, and I do expect them to offer him eventually, but that is merely one piece of information about him. If you look at all of the other stuff prior to Tuberville's firing, he was really starting to look very hard at us, and he is clearly very impressed. Moreover, he does seem to want to stay in-state. Once you eliminate Auburn, I think that means he is likely 'Bama bound. He's not a 'Bama lock just yet -- notice I said "pretty much" -- but with Auburn's struggles and our successes, I just have a hard time seeing us miss out on this young man given the mutual interest on both sides. Moreover, even the Auburn boards (ITAT) are now admitting that it seemed like Chitty, despite his commitment, was actually leaning somewhere else before the firing of Tuberville (i.e. Alabama).

As for Robinson v. Cox, that's a dang tough question. I don't know who is really higher on our board, and that will dictate it to an extent. On the other hand, it may very well be a situation of who commits first. Either way, we're going to have to wait a while on both of those guys. Robinson is going to take his visits, and Cox is going to let cooler heads prevail on the coaching change, so it may very well be a moot point in the end. Moreover, when Robinson says he will announce on Signing Day, that doesn't necessarily mean he will actually commit then. Most of these NSD commitments let the head coaches know where they are going a while before their official announcements, and that may very well be the case with Robinson. In that sense, when you are talking about NSD, silent commitments are pretty common.

Either way, as I said earlier, the upshot of it all is that we are going to get our Jack linebacker in this class. I don't know if it will be Cox or Robinson -- I would actually prefer Robinson, but that's another topic -- but either way, we're getting a highly-talented Jack linebacker prospect, and that's all that really matters in the end.

I'm hearing locally that Petey Smith will be announcing he's coming to Bama. Hopefully, there will be a link I can post today.:)

That would be a little unexpected but if the staff wants him then I do too. Also their is word that neither Jonathan Atchison OR Montez Robinson has a comittable offer. This was surprising to me as well. Maybe the staff is waiting on Cox to make a decision first and then Robinson can decide on signing day. But some are saying even though he took Purdue off his list he may end up there anyway. TIFWIW.

Re: 2010 WR / ATH B.J. Chitty De-Commits From Auburn

We really want to have this kid in crimson, he could be one of the key components of the 2010 class.
Could not agree more. Another huge development in our favor. This will help us again cement in the top in state talent next year.

What were Cotton's other options?
According to Scout, he had offers from kentucky, purdue, troy and so miss. Kentucky has 2 qb commits now so I doubt their offer is still good. When you look at that list I think he will likely end up back at auburn once everything settles down. I would love for him to pick troy over the aubs, have a stellar career and force them to have to watch his highlights on the news after every game.

The thing with Cotton is that a lot of schools like him as an athlete, but he planned on playing quarterback at Auburn, so that creates a bit of a precarious position for him.

On the one hand, if the new regime at Auburn doesn't really like him so much as a quarterback -- which most schools didn't -- then he may go somewhere else if he is really set on playing quarterback. On the other hand, if he really is willing to open up his recruitment as an athlete, I figure he'll get a good bit more in terms of scholarship offers.

Cotton is a good athlete, no doubt about that, but I've just never been very impressed with him as a quarterback prospect, and apparently most coaching staffs out there agree. As an athlete, though, he should get a lot more interest.

Guys, one thing to remember when reading published reports is that when guys are really sold on Alabama but haven't committed, there's a great chance they don't have a firm offer in hand. Sometimes, a coaching staff will recruit a guy because it makes other schools work hard to keep them... keeping them away from the guys they want to pursue. At other times, they recruit on a pecking order... and the offer is conditional. However, when a guys says, "Alabama is definitely my leader" but hasn't committed, take a second look.

Right now, I am almost certain Atchison doesn't have an offer... and the way it's playing, I don't think Robinson has one either. Coleman does not and will not IMO under any circumstances at this point. Any way it plays out, I think it's safe to say Fletcher Cox is at the top of our list at Jack... and we'd take him immediately. Grades, however, would be an issue to overcome... so if we took another Jack prospect I wouldn't be too surprised.

I think that is probably right, as hard as it is to believe with regard to Montez Robinson.

As I've said before, space is unbelievably tight right now in our class, and in my humble opinion there are only five prospects right now with firm offers that we are willing to hold, and they are the Big Four left in-state (Dre Kirkpatrick, Kendall Kelly, Tana Patrick, and Brandon Moore) and finally Reuben Randle. Anyone not on that list does not have a firm offer right now, in my opinion. Once you get past those guys, we are down to maybe our last scholarship or two, and with that in mind you can bet that we are going to be ungodly selective from here on out. The upshot of it all is that many incredibly talented players will be left out in the cold...

Robinson has elite talent, I don't question that, but with that said we are suddenly finding ourselves awash in Jack linebacker prospects. We were recruiting Stinson anyway, and now suddenly both Fletcher Cox and Montez Robinson are back on the market. As tight as space is, we really only have one spot for a Jack linebacker, and a couple of those guys will have to be left out in the cold.

At this point, no one really knows what the strategy is at that position. Perhaps we are going to wait on Cox a bit and then go after Robinson. Perhaps we will go after both and take either one. Perhaps we are going to wait on Robinson a bit and then go after Cox. Or perhaps it is going to be a first-come / first-serve basis. We really just don't know right now, but we'll find out. Either way, though, we're getting a highly-talented Jack linebacker somewhere, and I feel pretty confident that it will either be Robinson or Cox, and frankly you cannot go wrong with either.

If I had to wager, I would probably say that Fletcher Cox is at the top of our list at Jack linebacker, and that we are going to give him a couple of weeks to see what is happening. He does have some grade issues, though, and if the staff is worried about that or doesn't really think he will ultimately renege on Mississippi State, I fully expect us to put the full-court press on for Montez Robinson, and if we do I imagine that we reel him in. Again, no one knows our strategy for certain, but if I had to wager, I'd bet that the smart money is on this scenario.

As for Atchison, the news on him sounds good for us, which it has all along. He talked of not really waiting around on Auburn finding a replacement, and just choosing whoever he thought was best. He's going to visit us in January, and in my humble opinion he's really just waiting around on an Alabama offer. If we give him a firm offer, I have no doubt that he will wear crimson, and he's just waiting out for that chance right now. That said, though, I'm still not expecting him to get one. He's a fine player that in any other year I would have loved to have had, but space is just so limited in the class this year that I do not believe it is feasible for him. I think if Atchison gets a firm offer from us, that's probably a bad sign because it will mean we have struck out on some of the true priority guys, and I just don't see that happening. The only other way he could get in is if this class turns out to be much bigger than expected, and just looking at the 85 breakdown, I just don't see that as being a legitimate possibility.

Personally, I hope we extend to Atchison a greyshirt offer and that he takes it. He's a very talented kid, and I would love to have him in Tuscaloosa, but I just cannot realistically see a way that he fits into this class. Perhaps as a greyshirt in the 2010 class, though...

Recruiting is a crazy business, but that would be a shock.

I do not believe Atchison has a firm offer, and he is ahead of Petey Smith. I would be extremely surprised if we took Smith at this point.

I was very surprised when I heard this from a customer/friend of mine who is also a longtime Armwood booster. He said that Petey wanted to announce for Bama, but didn't know if an offer was on table from the Tide staff. I have doubted stories like this before and low and behold we find a way to fit them in. Petey is a real talent, but I don't think he will be on our team next year. We shall see.......

Article from Sporting News on Auburn decommitments ... really nothing we didn't know already but it's nice to see Auburn get the positive press. :)

Recruits drop Auburn after coach resigns

Avon (Ind.) DE Montez Robinson also has dropped the Tigers, Rivals.com reported. The four-star defensive end said he will now focus on choosing from Alabama, Georgia or Purdue.

"It's a sad day for me," Robinson told Rivals.com. "I like coach Tuberville a lot. I liked the Auburn staff, too. I was surprised. I thought they would give him at least one more year. I'm not committed there anymore. I'm definitely open."

Well I would not expect to see Petey Smith or Jonathan Atchison be a part of this class although some are saying that taking JA would help us IMMENSELY in the race for Branden Smith. But there are too many prospects still high on us that we REALLY want. And I believe we only take Robinson if we don't get Cox or Stinson or we get Cox and don't think he will qualify. And we might take two of these anyway. I believe the staff may take Stinson and Cox if we can. We shall see. It should be an interesting two months. RTR.:BigA:

This has been one of the most informative threads that I have read here on the recruiting board in a long time. I for one appreciate the more informed posters sharing their information. Whether rumor or stone cold fact, it makes for some good reading to those of us who follow recruiting. Thanks and keep it coming.

Re: Recruiting Cleanup

Montez Robinson is the only one I want.
Montez Robinson says that he is no longer committed to Auburn. He said it is down to either Bama or UGA and he will make a NSD decision. Reports are that Bama has never really pressed him for a commitment. It is very possible the if he waits that long neither of his favorite schools will have a slot left for him. He could end up at Purdue.

Auburn: Douglass LB committed early because of Tuberville
Atchison, a 6-foot-3, 212-pound member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, said he is still committed to Auburn but is now going to weigh his other options. He has nearly 15 offers with Alabama and Florida recruiting him the hardest.

“I’m visiting Alabama on an official visit on Jan. 16, and I’m meeting with [Florida assistant] coach Charlie Strong on Sunday at his hotel after the SEC Championship,” he said.

It sounds more and more like he is having to wait on something firm to come in on Fletcher Cox or Ed Stinson.

Honestly, though, Georgia has even less space than we do, so if we don't have room for him, I highly doubt that they will either.

At this point, it looks like Robinson may very well be playing the waiting game, and unless something opens up, he's Purdue-bound.

Montez Robinson De-Commits

Today alone, 5 Auburn players have decommitted, including Montez Robinson, a DE/Jack LB prospect. He says his favorites now are Georgia and 'Bama.

Terrance Coleman, Raymond Cotton, and B.J. Chitty are among the others.
