Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama @ USCe...

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

What I’ve found is that it’s usually the context surrounding the game that determines how you are treated by the average fan at their place. Everyone I talk to says “Ole Miss fans are great and it’s always fun to go to oxford” but going to Oxford was by far my worst road trip experience with fans of opposing teams. But I went to the 2016 game in which they had Hugh at his height, a 2 game win streak on us, and they took a 3 TD lead on us.

My one trip to Columbia SC was a good one. It was the 2019 game and their fans were great. I had heard horror stories from people who went in 2010 but i never experienced it. The only negatives was it was hot as hell, sandstorm was played too much, that chicken on the PA, and it was generally a dull Gameday production overall ( meaning there really wasn’t anything bringing me back). In the SEC there are only 4 places I’ve never been and that is Oklahoma, Vandy, Georgia, and Arkansas. Out of those 4 I probably will only be willing to go to Vandy and Arkansas

Then there was that time I went to a Raiders game wearing the opposing jersey.......and felt fortunate to get out of the parking lot alive.......IN A PRESEASON GAME........

Terry McAulay (referencing the ball being touched by Alabama on the punt):
There are actually two issues here: 1. It is a foul for an illegal block in the back. 2. The receiving team player being block is considered “passive” since he is not actively engaged with the kicking team player. That block forces him into the ball. Since he is considered “passive”, he is deemed *not* to have touched the ball. Assuming no one else from the receiving team touched the before the kickers, the ball should belong to the receiving team at the spot of the kicking team recovery.

I went to the 2019 game too, Much better experience. Najee hurdled that dude right in front of me, I was sitting maybe 15 rows up in the lower bowl. I remember there was a couple sitting next to us that were around my parents age, and they asked if it was our first trip to Columbia and how was the drive. I told her that i was from 20min down the road and she seemed shocked haha.

I also was at the 2001 game as a kid with my dad where they beat us for the first time. I seem to remember that we lost because we went for an early 2pt conversion for no good reason when we were up a couple scores, and they came back and we lost by one point. It was my first ever in person Alabama game and I’m pretty sure I cried on the way out of the stadium lol.

My mom was offered tickets to go to this game by some friends, but she didn’t want to make the trip (they now live in Tuscaloosa). Probably a good thing as that would have been a brutal game to endure for 58min lol.

Carolina fans are delusional (every year is “the year” they break out and win the conference), rabid, and get crazy in their stadium, especially when they sense blood in the water. Williams-Brice can get crazy and loud. But I agree that there isn’t much else to recommend the experience. The stadium is way off campus in the state fair grounds. Because of that their tailgating scene is quite literally tailgating in a parking lot or people putting up tents in front of houses down the road. The campus itself is spread out around a chunk of the city, so there really is no “quad” to hang out at. It’s just downtown Columbia. There is no meld between the campus and the stadium like there is in Tuscaloosa.

You know, I wondered that when I was watching it.

I didnt understand how they gave the ball to SC there. He shoved one player into the return man, i didnt realize that was a legal play.

Welp. I said before the game that playing at Williams-Bryce could be tougher than their record showed. Basically everything that needed to happen for South Carolina to win that game happened. Multiple bad turnovers, multiple 3 & outs, horrible field position, penalties at the worst times, etc etc. And yet this team didn’t fold, kept its head in the game, and made the plays on offense and created the plays on defense to win it in the 4th.

I’d say this was probably the worst game the team has played all season, but at the same time it might be the best team win and “grit” win they’ve had to date. This game was frustrating and we have some serious issues we need to clean up on O now. But it was also an extremely satisfying win in the way they finished. This bye couldn’t come at a better time! I've never seen this game (even though I've had it on VHS tape since a few days after the game and converted it to DVD), but I'm reading the articles on it. It looks like we went for the two-point while ahead, 29-17, and failed. Bizarrely enough, SCAR missed a PAT when they closed the gap to 36-30 that if we had been up by seven would have REQUIRED them to tie us at best late. Looking at the stat sheet, we beat the holy crap out of them - except in two areas, the scoreboard and oh yeah, turnovers. And penalties killed us, too (10 vs their 5).

FIRST DOWNS 30-17
TOTAL YARDS 516-359
OFF PLAYS 83-56
TOP 39-21

Honest point here: Mississippi State fans FROM THE MOMENT they beat us in 1980 became the exact same way. "Oh, this is the year we win the SEC, even if we lose, we'll beat Bama." They didn't beat us again for 16 years.

Seeing that replay, it looks like that was a deliberate attempt to push our player into the ball. Can’t believe the refs let them get away with that. I wonder if it is a reviewable type of play? I don’t see why not since they can review whether a player touched the ball.

Yeah the fairgrounds aspect of it just is very off putting. It’s like going to a bowl game where it’s just a carnival parking lot around the stadium. It’s more of a “fine” experience.

Stadium wise for attending true bama away games (keep in mind there are 4 SEC stadiums i haven’t been to)

1. Kyle Field (aTm) it’s BDS but 10x better
2. Tiger Stadium (LSU). Best atmosphere in and out of the stadium in college football
3. Camp Randall (Wisconsin). Rich tradition, good stadium, and just good overall experience
4. Davis Wade (MSU): as crazy as it sounds it’s a pretty cool stadium minus the cowbells
5) Kroger (UK). Best parking in the SEC bar none, great stadium, but weird atmosphere
6) Jordan Hare (Auburn): I will never go back for an iron bowl but I have to give it to Auburn… they can create one of the most hostile environments in college football with a traditional 8-4 team. They also have the prettiest grass in the SEC
7) Farout Field (Mizzou): it’s nice for what it is and there is a lot to see outside the stadium. Plus people are super nice.
8) Williams Brice: really have discussed it
9) Ben Hill (Florida). Unpopular opinion but I was totally let down by the swamp. It’s a very old feeling stadium and I hate where they put visitors (they share a section with the Florida student section)
10) DKR (Texas). It looks nice on TV but good god it’s a horrible experience. Do not recommend
11) neyland (Tennessee). Stadium is a DUMP but it’s a gorgeous drive and outside the stadium is nice.
12) Vaught Hemingway (Ole Miss)- stadium is like a high school stadium and the Grove is criminally overrated.

Like I said, you dont want to have games like this but you want to win games like this. Games like this, though you dont want them, develops character and grit. Yesterday's game will come back and serve us well down the road. The dang defense BOWED UP!!!!

Drives:

1 over 4 minutes (7:38 - next to last drive)
2 over 3 minutes (3:19 when we fumbled in 2Q and 3:51 when we turned it over on downs in 3Q)
2 over 2 minutes (2:12 first drive, 2:16 in 2Q on first TD drive)
1 over 1:30 minute (1:40 n 3Q)
the other 5 under 1:30 minutes

avg drive: 2:26

This has to be fixed. Our Defense cannot stay on field that long.

5 of 11 drives were 3 and out
Reminds me of last year, although I doubt we had any drives over 7 minutes. We have been dominating in ToP so far this year up until this game.

Yeah I remember dominating the game but letting them get back in it and then losing.

The scheduling has changed so much now with two different conference expansions but I remember listening to sports radio out of Columbia and every year without fail if they got to 6-0 or 5-1 guys would be calling in saying “we are winning the East and playing for the conference title baby!” Then they would proceed to drop the remaining 5-6 games. They always played UGA early but played Tennessee and Florida and the rotational West team in the back half if I remember correctly. Then of course end the season with Clemson, who even as a historically 8-9 win program dominated that rivalry. But man were they an optimistic bunch.

d was not going to let us lose. seems like it's been a while since we've had that attitude.

With the right coach, USCe could be a contender. They get enough talent to beat anybody. They need a culture changer type of coach.

Spurrier did a pretty good job with them, and actually DID win the east one time (and then they got boat raced in the title game, I think it was 2011 vs LSU).

If it matters to recruits these days, Carolina has a facilities problem. (1) it’s in the middle of the capital city so it’s hard for them to expand and put up new buildings like they do in Tuscaloosa. (2) basically everything they have, at least last time I checked, is from the 80s. It’s like if every facility was on the level of Coleman Colosseum. I think the head coach’s office is still in a cramped little room in the stadium. The stadium hasn’t been updated in forever. Probably around the same time they added the second sideline upper deck at Bryant-Denny. I’d say that Carolina’s best facility is the baseball stadium.
