I feel your frustration; I really do. And if college football were the same as it was just a few years ago, I would agree, but it isn’t. NIL and the quitter hole have turned college football into a damned minor league system for the NFL.

recruiting rankings don’t mean much when college football has what is basically a free agency system. And make No mistake, I absolutely HATE this.
Then let's be frank- our coach sucks at NIL.

No, Anderson was forced to slide inside like a DT with another OLB outside him. This is different. Just as bad, but different.
Only in that one rush package I’ve forgotten the name of. Which has resulted in a sack like maybe once. It’s the dumbest thing we do

It’s part of the scheme we use. They drop bc they have to based on the formation/play. It’s why sark worked us and kiffin seemingly always works us. They know the formations and players and can put people in positions where they are doing something they aren’t great at. Tennessee too. I shudder to think what will happen in that game if downs can’t figure things out
Maybe its time to tweak those schemes

Unfortunately, this is the new normal.

The fear of Bama is gone.

And while Saban enjoyed berating the press for calling Bama dead when OM beat them - this was different. And the last few years have felt different as well...

I don't know the answer, but I do know that it feels very much like the 'Saban magic' is gone.
CA - a comment my son (albeit a barner) as we discussed the game. I had mentioned to him I had sensed CNS has been tremendously frustrated in the preceding to seasons. He made the comment that “CNS just seems kinda of “disengaged” this year. I think ya’ll are better off with the frustrated Nick Saban than an “indifferent” one”.
Now my son is pretty bright and rather intuitive, even as an Auburn grad.
I’m not ready quite yet to say “it’s over”, but Nick has to decide whether it is important to him, instead of him questioning the players desires.

More CNS presser:

Milroe "didn't get the "poor me's" at any point. Had good sideline demeanor."

"Until end with 5 min to go we had a chance to stop them but jumped offside"

"all plays they made were explosive plays. They didn't make explosive plays in 3Q and we were able to get off field on 3rd down. We knew they would take explosive shots and they made them. We didn't make 'long foul balls' happen"
So many excuses for the team playing largely like crap...

Sometimes I wonder if the NC during the covid year might not have been all it's cracked up to be. Now before I get bashed, I didn't watch a single game that year. How many games did we play? There were not any live spectators, correct? I know we had Mac and he had a great year as well as others. But, not every team played all of their games did they?

Sark has done an excellent job at Texas. He has a very good team.
Yes but our atrocious line play on both sides (and poor QB play) made them look very good. 2 INTs resulted in 10 easy pts. And let Ewers convert his first TDs over 20 yds…ever. They will not go undefeated. They will not win the Natty. They outplayed and out coached us tonight but they would lose 35-13to Kirby tmrw. If Kiffin and Kirby were still our coordinators that is a 45-20 Bama beat down. We just got dominated pure and simple. Maybe that is youth. Unfortunately it may be really bad game plans by our coordinators and CNS’ tendency to value loyalty over what needs to happen. Milroy had no business being in the game after the 2d INT. If TB or TS cant make a 15 yd throw to an open receiver consistently then the dynasty is truly over.

I think the reaction to Bama's loss is little bit of overreaction. This is early in the season. Game 2. We'll know more about the team in coming weeks. This is what I saw tonight and needs to be fixed.

1. LT and LG had rough night. Proctor at this point has been struggling for two weeks in a row. I think a change is needed for OL line. Not just Left side, but at Center. Move Dalcourt to Center and make some adjustments there. There was no reason for Milroe to be under lot of pressure nonstop.

See what Saban said on this:

2. Milroe was under pressure all night long, but he didn't make great decisions here and there. Two Interceptions were bad because he telegraphed the throws. He must improve in coming weeks.. and sadly I don't think he can get better in time. Milroe was our best choice tonight, like it or not. I did not like how he read the field at times, and he should've ran when he had an opportunity. He was indecisve tonight. Too many mistakes. Guys were open tonight.

3. I'm very concerned about our DL/LB and their inability to stop the run, and we can't even generate pass rush. So, I'm wondering if some of bad habits was from last year under Golding, or we simply aren't developing them.

4. Safeties/CB: Arnold got burned several times and he kept holding them all night. He saved touchdowns, but he shouldn't be doing that. Safeties were out of position several times throughout the game.

5. Communication issues between Safeties and LB. Lot of that going on tonight, and both times it led to touchdowns.

6. The C had several illegal snaps and low snaps tonight. I don't know why he was off, and I hope he fixes that quick.

Worry level right now: 6 out of 10. Can this be fixed? Yes. Can this be a 2 or 3 losses team? yes.

I expect few changes at some positions next week.

We will be fine. Step off the ledge and get some sleep. We'll be fine.

Dalcourt needs to be on the bench. SM had a tough night for sure, but DD got creamed just as bad and his history at OC is worse, way worse. the two false snaps were perplexing. Other OL moved around as well on both, so it's like they were anticipating something, but hard to say. Ferguson should likely be the OF over DD, and Pritchett might need to get another look at OT.

That said, a lot of the pressure was because Sark gambled that JM wouldn't pull the trigger on open guys on the intermediate routes. It was a good gamble. As you mentioned, guys were open tonight, but JM wasn't attempting to get the ball to them.

The pass rush, or lack of, was mostly due to Steele dropping the OLB into coverage so much. The OLB should be the 4th rusher, and only rushing 3 is rarely going to generate pressure. Steele needs to get back to getting 4 guys into the rush package or we won't get a lot of pressure this season.

Watched every play. They will come loaded for bear. They will know every tendency we have, likely know our signals, and know our personnel better than anybody. Saban has no coaching advantage only talent advantage on defense.

If Kiffen and Dart are given time to throw over the top like tonight, we will have a problem...

I dunno if you saw the Ole Miss vs Tulane game today, but Golding's special touch was evident all day long. Everything that drove us nuts last year, plus a dropoff in talent.

I honestly don't blame him. Can you imagine getting to the top of your profession/craft/field, having mastered it, and then every year having the rules changed randomly.

main takeaways:

1) Milroe was really really bad. Having one really bad interception is a problem. Having two? Then it enters very very bad game territory. On a scale of interceptions from 1 being a ball your reciever drops into the arms of a defender and 10 being a bad throw and bad decision, these were like 9.85s. His pocket presence is nonexistent and he is constantly stepping right into the pressure. At other times he makes a bad dash backwards and sideways after his first read isn't wide open......he was really bad in the A&M game(which was the last meaningful action he had), and he was really bad again tonight. I don't know if we have anyone better or not(I guess not?), but to act like he isn't the biggest problem is silly imo. Yes we may have other problems too, but not having a qb in 2023 is a killer.

2) Way too much blame is being thrown on the offensive line for the pass blocking. Pocket after pocket like the 2020 season(those were the best pockets mac was stepping into I've ever seen) are very atypical. In the real world, a pocket eventually breaks down somewhat......even when the protection is *very good*. The bigger problem is milroe's management of the pocket. Time after time he would actually be responsible for pivoting right into the collapse of the pocket. A lot of people in this forum have an unreasonable expectation for what a pretty good pocket will look like in 2023. Just because pass protection wasn't 2020 level doesn't mean it was bad. Now the bigger problem with the offensive line was they were getting good push for the run game the first possession or two, but after that not so much and it was very inconsistent. I thought after our first series- "we can just run right at these guys time after time, even if they know it's coming". Clearly, we *couldn't* do that.

3) The defense was very good in the first half, and then had some problems in the secondary(and DL- no pressure) for much of the second half. But again, here some have to adjust their expectations. Nobody really *consistently* stops a good offense like that in 2023 anymore. Expecting that to be the standard like it's 2008 is just not realistic.

And it's for that very reason why having a qb like Milroe is just not going to get it done in today's college football environment. I don't know how we got in this situation actually where roster management was such that their was no above average qb ready to step in for the 2023 season. Very frustrating......

I’ll say this: I have a niece that’s being recruited currently by UA and multiple other SEC schools for softball. She reads all of the message boards and it definitely affects her opinion of the schools in general. I’ll keep rooting for the Tide and try to remain positive. I’m waiting on my daughter to march with the MDB color guard in the fall of 2025. RTR my friends.

I'll say this and then I'm likely done as far as this thread goes.
1st: Milroe can't read a defense/coverage. Ain't all his fault. We had an OC for the past two seasons that for whatever reason refused to develop a back up qb. That lies squarely on the head coach for not demanding that he do so.
2: I do not understand why we absolutely REFUSE to call a time out when it is clear that we need to get together on defense or when the defense is so discombobulated that they aren't even really lined up when the ball is snapped.
3: That was one of the most ill-prepared teams I have seen in a long time. That's on the coaching. No apparent adjustments at halftime, especially on defense. Nothing changed up to even remotely pressure the qb. WHY?

I am by no means any kind of expert. When I think back to when we had a noticeable loss of physicality, meaning the ability to manipulate the line of scrimmage anyway we chose, I go back to when Cochran left. The further we get from that departure, the more glaring it becomes.

We had over 1600 lbs of beef up front that was ineffective as the game went on to wear on the d-line. It used to be that we lived for the 4th quarter to make them quit. Jalen/Tua/Mac/Bryce are not walking through that door. If we cannot effectively run the ball to have sustained drives (aka joyless murderball) we cannot win. We have to be able to set up playaction more. Otherwise, our QB will continue to look like Don Knotts in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

you're thinking about the famous 1DL, 3OLB packaging and that did happen for sure, but above and beyond thant, believe it or not, there were times that Golding out have 2 bigs, or DL on one side of the formation, with one of them trying to play as an edge player, then have Anderson playing over the OG/OT gap, and and OLB outside of him. It was absolutely ridiculous.
