Link: Official PSU Scandal Thread

I'm not willing to say just yet that this will have a major impact on PSU outside of this year and the after effects of Paterno's firing...most have short memories and will turn a blind eye if it benefits them. I expect them to get a good up and coming coach and have a slight drop off in recruiting the next couple of years.

Now if this sex ring thing is true...they're done.

Which is why any smart potential coach is going to wait until the investigations have been completed and all the skeletons have been unearthed before they show any interest in the job. At this point, no one knows how far that "ring" is spread or who all might have been involved. If Sandusky was able to personally check boys out of school and take them with him on 'visits' to other states, (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45255919/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/)
I'm wondering how many of his peers also knew what was going on. It's not just about who did what, it's also about who knew what, when and for how long.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

If, and of course this is complete speculation, McQueary had been a victim of Sandusky himself, it would make his failure to stop the shower incident far more understandable to me. Kids who've been abused are usually held silent by the intimidation and brainwashing by the perpetrator, even into adulthood. There's shame, fear, and a general "wanting it to all just go away" thing at play that can leave them virtually paralyzed when it comes to talking about it, even years later and even if they rationally know that talking about it can save future victims.

If this was the case, wouldn't it be out of character for him to report it to 3-4 people in such graphic detail?

Not necessarily. Especially if his dad was really leaning on him to do the right thing. But it sure could explain his seeming paralysis at the time of actually walking in on the act.

Paterno was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007, and a 7-foot bronze statue of him running onto the field, right index finger raised, stands outside Beaver Stadium. Inscribed on a wall behind it are Paterno's words:

"They ask me what I'd like written about me when I'm gone. I hope they write I made Penn State a better place, not just that I was a good football coach."

Ultimately, they may. Paterno came to Penn State as a 23-year-old assistant in 1950. His wife graduated from there, and so did all five of their children.

His success, and the honor he brought in achieving it, elevated not only the football program but also the university.

But first, the wreckage of scandal must be cleared.

incredibly, sandusky was still being used for recruiting earlier this year (which is an absolute ncaa violation btw) unless penn state contends he was simply there to watch a potential recruit's football game?

Ranked last year by ESPNU as the 26th linebacker prospect in the country, Ah Ching said he was paid a visit by Penn State's former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky. “He came to my last spring game going into my senior season. He liked how I moved, laterally, and how gifted I am,” said Ah Ching.

My opinion is that if McQueary were a victim when he was younger of Sandusky that at this time he would be man enough to come out and join the lawsuit. If he was a victim he would surely want to press his own criminal charges.

I don't think McQueary is or was a victim of Sandusky. I believe he is just a member along with Paterno of the rather large dispicable conspiracy of cowards. jmofwiw

That really is the bottom line. Sandusky was allowed by 'PSU' to conduct 'his' business as usual even after it was known that he is a sexual predator. In my opinion it is inconceivable that Paterno did not know what Sandusky was all about since Sandusky's 'retirement' in the 90's. Paterno and most of the PSU Administration enabled or allowed Sandusky to continue his business as usual at PSU.

Apparently even some of PSU's ex-players are still under Sandusky's evil spell, raising money for his defense. Were is the effort to raise money for the victims and their families?

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7220097/penn-state-nittany-lions-rally-program
No, but another former Nittany Lion said he hasn't forgotten Sandusky, even as the former assistant coach stands accused of having sex with young boys.

Sam Stellatella, a three-position player in the 1950s, has donated money to Sandusky's defense and urged other former players to do the same.

"I told him he's going to need a million dollars to defend himself," the 73-year-old Stellatella said. "He called me back and said, 'What am I going to do with this money?' I said, 'Use it for your lawyer because you're going to need it.' "

Stellatella sent Sandusky $100. He wrote personal letters to other members of the 1959 Liberty Bowl team that defeated a Bear Bryant-coached Alabama team and asked they also donate. He does not know how much money was raised.

"I know some of the guys sent money," Stellatella told The Associated Press. "Here's the thing, these are horrendous charges against him. But he's still entitled to his day in court. Everybody's prejudged him. He's done horrendous damage to Paterno and (athletic director Tim) Curley and the football program. I don't listen to the news and I don't read the reports of what he did because I would get too upset.

"But he's still entitled to his day in court."

Amen! I'm so tired of people trying to justify everything people do that's wrong. Sometimes, people do the wrong thing. When it involves morality, it's called evil, wickedness, and sin. Yeah, those things still exist even though we want to say "they couldn't help it," "they were born that way," or "they're simply a product of their environment." Sometimes, people just decide to do the wrong thing. Sandusky chose to molest little boys. It's not a sickness that he can't help. McQueary chose to not do anything when he saw the little boy being molested by that monster. Others chose to do the wrong thing! This justification of wrongdoing is only contributing to the moral bankruptcy we see progressing in our country.

We all mess up and do wrong from time to time. We should admit it, correct it, and try to improve. That's the key. How do you deal with your mistakes? Don't justify them or try to cover them up.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

Barry Switzer is 100% correct about this.

Switzer also expressed doubt that Paterno did not know about the accusations against his former top assistant, Jerry Sandusky. For as much time as big-time college coaches spend with their staffs, there are very few secrets.“Having been in this profession a long time and knowing how close coaching staffs are, I knew that this was a secret that was kept secret,” Switzer said. “Everyone on that staff had to have known, the ones that had been around a long time.”Switzer said the scandal at Penn State is part of a larger epidemic at universities where the size and power of certain sports programs becomes so great that it becomes bigger than the school it represents. Penn State, despite its reputation, was not immune.“I'll tell you how it happens — it's the American sports phenomenon,” Switzer said. “I've seen it happen all my life. We've made coaches and players and athletes more than what we are. It's what happens in American sports. Because of that, they've gotten away with more than they should have.
