Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

If it's proved true that Sandusky was pimping these kids out to prominent Boosters..Penn State Football should be shut down for a year or two..If this scandal runs that deep within the football program..A "Death Penalty" type punishment may be the only way to truly cleanse the evil within the athletic program..Sickening..Paterno & Penn St deserves what's about to hit them..

I've been giving this some thought and here is where I believe the NCAA could get into it. No, Sandusky at the time was not an employee of PSU. The question is then why did the AD and University Pres perjure themselves? It was to protect the football program. So you have two officials with a university perjuring themselves to protect the football program. There is your complete lack of institutional control, or total institutional control used the wrong way whichever way you look at it. Either way perjury was committed to protect the program.

I also agree with Earle's take that they will suffer a fate near that of the DP just from the hit in public opinion.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

Someone mentioned to me the other day, in passing - I wonder if McQueary had ever been a victim of Sandusky's?

Might explain his lack of action when he saw them in the shower...

This was my first thought when I heard he had been in school with Sandusky's son.
I just can't see that. It would seem to me, that if McQueary was a victim of Sandusky as a child, and he walked in on him doing this to another child as an adult, he would have pulled his head off and you know what in his neck. That makes his lack of action seem even more absurd to me. But I aint real smart.

I'm not saying he was, this part of the discussion is pure speculation, but if he were a victim of Sandusky it would actually make more sense. A victim of this type of thing can remain scared of their attacker even into adulthood. Staci can give us better insight into this than I can. Can we get some help here doc?

Not necessarily. If abused at an early and impressionable age, the victim might start thinking that the abuse is a normal activity between an adult and child. Hence it wouldn't exactly be unexpected for an abused person to grow up and become an abuser themselves.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

I'll go way out on a limb here and say that PSU ticket sales are about to take a big hit.

That's no limb...
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-11-10/penn-state-football-ticket-prices-fall-23-.html

Ticket resale prices for Penn State’s football game against the University of Nebraska have dropped almost 23 percent since coach Joe Paterno was fired last night.

But I am glad I am not a Penn St. ticket scalper this year. You have two marquee home games in Bama and Nebraska. For the Bama game, you have massive flooding which hurt demand. Then for Nebraska, this happens.

Edit: Not that I feel bad for them or anything. As far as people who were hurt in this scandal, ticket scalpers are pretty irrelevant.

Could also explain why he had, and still has, a job.

That's what I've begun to think. At first I thought he was given a job as a reward for keeping this quiet, and that he kept quiet because he failed to report it in the following weeks. Now I'm thinking there may be something to this Victim 2 being McQueary himself.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

I may be wrong, but I have the feeling that they're going to suffer something close to the DP anyway. I wonder how many of their recruits they can retain. For that matter, how will the present players respond the rest of the season?

They probably will get killed in recruiting this year. The only ones who stay will be the ones that were Penn. St fans all their lives, and even some of those might leave. I guess you might have some others who stay knowing that they might get a lot of early playing time.

I think that the NCAA should allow any current Penn St. student to transfer after this year without any penalty.

Next year, it depends. They really need to get a good coach with a clean reputation. (Sorry Houston Nutt :biggrin2:)

A good analogy for what will happen is Baylor basketball. It took Scott Drew five years before they were back. And Penn St. football won't have as bare coffers as Baylor basketball did. I think they will be back in a year or two. Although they might have a dip when this year's recruiting class are upperclassmen.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

Probably! It's fiction. I've had 3 former students hang themselves over the past 5 years on campus or in the dorm or home. Life ain't easy here!

I just saw this post Ld when I went back to read over some of this thread. So sad, yet another horrible situation that most of the nation never sees or understands. We really do turn a blind eye to so many things here in this country as we spend our time arguing over coaching decisions, tv camera cables, watching tv or manicuring our lawns. There is so much suffering out there, real suffering that goes unreported and unnoticed. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and so much energy, resources and effort goes into helping those groups that are the loudest. It's the ones who quietly suffer and have no real advocates that need our help the most and never get it.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

If, and of course this is complete speculation, McQueary had been a victim of Sandusky himself, it would make his failure to stop the shower incident far more understandable to me. Kids who've been abused are usually held silent by the intimidation and brainwashing by the perpetrator, even into adulthood. There's shame, fear, and a general "wanting it to all just go away" thing at play that can leave them virtually paralyzed when it comes to talking about it, even years later and even if they rationally know that talking about it can save future victims.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

Cindy I've been saying this from the moment the story hit. All the talk of legacy, chain of command, etc... is pure after fact. Why did this man not stop this? That is the question I would really like to see him faced with.

The part that just breaks my heart is the fact that while this child was being sodomized he saw someone walk in. He had to have thought at that moment the horror he was experiencing was about to stop. Someone was about to come to his rescue and stop this monster from hurting him any further. He was about to get away and the silence of what he was going through was about to be broken. Then imagine what he must have felt as he saw the potential savior turn and walk away without stopping the attack. You would have to feel at that moment that your life was completely worthless for someone not to help you. The thought of that absolutely breaks my heart and brings tears to my eyes.
Yes i couldnt have said it better it just makes me sick and that child and many more as it turns out have been let down by people that should have been there to help. It makes me sick!!!!:mad2:

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

I wasn't jumping on you and I'm sorry if my post came across that way. I'm posting between phone calls at work and it may have come off wrong. This is so confusing none of us really understand.
Didn't take it that way at all, brother. Just me being me. ;)

It's nice to have our own resident psychiatrist, particularly at disturbing/puzzling times like these...

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

Well, isn't that a strange twist? That would explain his silence when he witnessed Sandusky abusing the boy. But, if he was once a victum of the pervert himself, it seems he would have chosen to work elsewhere and distance himself from the guy.

This was my first thought when I heard he had been in school with Sandusky's son.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

I just like how the title refers to the "PSU Coach" as if we wouldnt know who Joe Paterno is otherwise.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

You bring up a good point Earle..How will the Players & Recruits react to all this..Loyalty only runs so deep..If it came down to my love of Bama Football or the well being of kids..There's nothing to consider..Protecting kids trumps everything..And yeah I imagine recruiting at Penn St will take a major hit..I wouldn't want my kid play or attend Penn St after this came out..

Something tells me that Penn State will suffer from all of this for a very long time - years or even a decade. The fallout from this will be a nasty, dirty mark on their reputation and it doesn't matter how "clean" and what a great university they may have been through the years - THIS is a legacy they will never shake. It makes me sad, because that is one university/fan base I truly respected.
