Question: Ok what are your thoughts on the offensive line?

In general, Tackle play was solid-very good. Guard-guard play was fair-midland. Need to watch again to really say.

My observations.
Lacy and Fowler had much better YPC averages than Trent. Trent got the TD's. I expect Kent State was set up to stop Trent. Everything considered it was an OK game. AJ appears to be the QB. Need to get the KO into the end zone. D looked good.

Your user name makes me chuckle...

I only remember a few penalties. That makes me less nervous and think they are farther ahead than some of you think. Don't forget, we dont have Pendry any more.
Few penalties for either team and no cheap shots. Kent St. played with a lot of class and not a bit of quit.

Why did BJ play center? I did not think we had issues with Vlachos. I thought BJ played guard and tackle due to Womack.

I think we'll be just fine whenever we find a 5 and stick with them. Many of the mishaps didn't start to take place until we started shifting/experimenting. I wasn't blown away by our offensive line play today, but that kid Nix isn't a slouch by any means. I give him just as much credit for our struggles as I do us. I think we'll be okay going forward. There were a few lapses in pass protection, but other than that, the sacks mostly came from holding onto the ball for far too long.

OL fix = Cyrus starts by 3rd game, Jones back to guard, AJ is the starter, this was used as a scrimmage today, coaches played wtih OL, will be better next week.

CK takes over the tackle, then BJ back to guard then some playing time together and things will be going in the right direction

I am going to watch the game again, but not being able to move the ball on the ground in the first half with our running backs was the story of the day. Our line regressed big time last year and I am hoping for improvements in this area this year or we have a problem. This was Kent State and we started Trent Richardson. Two years ago we could have opened up a hole on the left side at will. We seem to always win our conference when we have a superstar tackle, our next superstar hasn't panned out like expected and our line cost us games last year.

Kent State shut down our running game before wearing out from depth. Looked like a mirror of last years team with a better defense. Hopefully Cyrus will step in and give us that guaranteed hole when we need it at some point, but that's probably going to take a little time.

I know many of you are talking about switching groupings, but we had sacks and pressure at the beginning of the game as much as at the end of the game. I saw BJ get beat mulitiple times at LT. Maybe we can put him back at RG because we definitely couldn't run on the right side. Hopefully Cyrus or someone will establish themselves at LT. I think we really miss Aaron Douglas right now. We were gelling during the A day game. I'm sure we'll get better, but lets not overcomplicate things and put players in 3 different OL positions.

I think it's to early to tell, they should be great. To me it was more about the coaches trying to find who played best where.
Kent State D also was not a joke and Sims was slow getting rid of the ball. Trent to me didn't hit the holes fast enough on a few runs.
Plus I have never been able to tell much from a 11am kickoff maybe it's just me.

Not panicking by any means. But you have to be crazy to not be disappointed with the OL play. I was hoping that by Pendry's retirement that the OL would be better. Not saying that they won't be better than last year but the jury is definately still out. They are way too talented to not have played better than they did today, rotations and groupings be damned.

I understand the praise for BJ, but he is not tackle material. He doesn't have the lateral agility or body type to defend the linebackers and defensive ends we're gonna see from Florida, Arkansas, and LSU. Cyrus definitely has the quickness and body, he just needs to get used to the speed of the game, to play more alertly. We need him to step up big if we're going to win the SEC.

Fluker will always be a good, but not great, RT. There will be several plays a game when he gets beat bad on the pass rush, but he'll make up for it when he gets ticked off (the frequency of which has steadily been increasing) and pancakes some poor linebackers.

The thing that bothers me the most is that our OL just doesn't have the right attitude. They look lost out there at times, even the ones that started last year. We need Hightower jumping on them every play, they just need to wake up in the morning with their first thought being I'm gonna kill someone this week. They need to become a pack of starving wolves whose only form of sustenance is pancakes (pancake blocks that is).

Also Trent didn't look like he was hitting the holes quickly enough, I think something was wrong with him, physically. Lacy looked like the more polished back, but again, too little to make a solid judgment.

Another thing to take into account is that Kent State's front seven was easily the strength of the team, I'd say the talent of their front seven is on a whole nother level compared to the rest of their team. As for the rest of their team, we dominated them like a top 5 team should.

When we line up five guy in a single combo for most of a game and they play like today I will be worried. Constantly tweaking the line up in a glorified scrimmage does not concern me too much, especially when you consider we were breaking in so many players on offense with little previous playing time.

Earlier, a lot of consideration was given to moving DJ to guard, where he could concentrate on being a road grader, which he could be very good at. At that time, Douglas was still available. Right now, our best hope, as has been said above, is for CK to take over at LT.
