Question: Ok what are your thoughts on the offensive line?

Tacking on to what I said earlier...If we see reports from practice that sugeest BJ is practicing all over the place again, I'll be more concerned. If it looks like we're settling in then I will settle down a bit. Let's just see what happens this week in practice.

By all accounts I think our offensive line starters should go as follows.

RT - Fluker
RG - Steen
C - Vlachos
LG - Jones
LT - Kouandjio

We were trying different OL combinations Saturday to find the best combination. We could afford to do that with Kent St. I'm sure we won't see this next Saturday.

I agree with this. A lot of it had to do with the speed of the blocking assignments, which Kent State used to it's advantage. It reminded me of good players with a couple of Rudy's on Steriods that would out quick one of our lineman to get through on a slant, getting through untouched sometimes.

Our problem is and has been left tackle. We seem to be a different team according to this position. We now have the answer and the sooner Cyrus plays along side BJ on the left the quicker we have that 2009 guaranteed short yardage option that helped us win a championship, just like 1999 with Samuels and Alexander, and we get back to our balanced selves again.

I believe the days of defenses dictating our game is soon to be over.

I hadn't thought of this before and I'm sure the coaches didn't do it for this reason, but playing different groupings in the OL may make Penn State prepare for different groupings since they don't know what our first option is. What do you think?

You never know what CNS is thinking, that could very well be the case. IMHO, if Douglas were still here we might have seen the OL shuffling we saw on Saturday.

The means out weigh the gains if that was the main intent imo. I believe they did it so they could pour over game film this week (HD with a little color bleed:)) and have the line set for the most part for Saturday's game.

I say the probability is 0%.

Nope. Think dance-team. It's all about schemes. Not individuals. Hat-on-hat drive-blocking being the only exception.

If there are ANY thoughts of Cyrus possibly starting then I would hope the staff makes that decision this week, plugs the kid in and let him begin to go through the growth process. So that when we get to the meat of our schedule he will have "lived and learned" a bit. My worst fear is starting a new combination each week for five or six weeks.

I watched the entire game yesterday and looked a lot at the O-line play. At times they looked great and times they looked terrible. Very inconsistent. C.Warmack did seem to have some issues getting people blocked. This occured on several plays which enabled the d-line of kent state to get people in the backfield. It is hard for any running back to run if people are all over him before he gets the ball. However, he was impressive in being very quick in pulling and getting downfield; however, on a couple of occassions he got downfield and seemed a little out of position on getting the right hit which could have really broke open the run. I don't think there is anything wrong with Trent Richardson. I don't know if all the was Warmack's fault or if there were communication problems within the line, so I don't want to come across as blaming everything on Warmack.

D.J. Flucker also made a couple of mistakes. One of the interceptions the Sims threw was because he was being hit at the same time he was releasing the ball. Hard to blame that on the quarterback. I would like to see any of us complete a pass when we are getting hit by a 250+ pound lineman.

Both Sims and McCarron each had a interception that was their own fault (i.e. A.J. badly overthrew Deandrew White and Sims waited too late and threw the interception that got ran back to the 3 yard line) and each had one that was someone else's fault (i.e. A.J. hit the tight end in the hands and it was deflected to a defender and Sims got hit while throwing the ball). Reviewing the quarterbacks, A.J. defintely had the better day, but Sims was not as bad as I initially thought. The offensive line made some mistakes that led to Sims being sacked, rushed, etc. It will not surprise me if Saban doesn't give Sims another chance this week.

Overall, the team looked great, but the offensive line should be much better than the way they played this past week. The good thing is, they say a team will see the most improvement between week 1 and week 2. Let's hope this is the case with the offensive line.

Cyrus

Look at this face. He's not sloppy and ugly like a lot of OL's :), he looks more like a defensive end or something. He looks intelligent too. Like Tommy Mac stated, this is our next three
year to the NFL lineman. We will build a running game around this guy very, very soon. I look for steady improvement this year and by next year, he will be getting a lot of national press.

C.Warmack did seem to have some issues getting people blocked.

His speed was lacking on some plays. One time a player blew right by him untouched that resulted in a 5 yard loss.

This really seems like the best combo. I trust the coaches know better than me, but I hope they settle in and go with it. Use an extra back if you need to help with pass pro, but settle it down and we'll be fine.

I think a lot of the problem with the offensive line not blocking is the playbook we have. Most of the plays are very simple and it is a case of whether they work or not being if the other team is outmanned. Most teams have figured out the few plays we run and stack the line to stop them.

What makes you think we are going to hear anything out of practice...... :P

I think I still prefer BJ at RG. That's been a very solid combo to run behind for a couple of years. The problem is Steen and Warmack have not rotated sides and Steen has overtaken Warmack.

I'm obviously not in the film sessions with our linemen, :D but there were some missed assignments. That's to be expected though when guys are changing positions and splitting reps. It's just unreasonable to expect someone to master a position when they're splitting on field practice time with other players and switching positions during camp, and the performance yesterday bore that out.

They kinda had to be that disorganized. Hopefully you're right about a more stable rotation this week. WRT to practice time, there's a big difference between learning something in film study and translating that to the field with your teammates. Practice is the only way to "master" the position, and there's only so much practice time to go around.

I wasn't really expecting a mastering of the position , but I understand this is only the first game so I am sure there is some adjusting to be done and nerves that will be calmed but they have been on the practice field squaring off against a physical Alabama defense . I believe week 2 will be a whole different story.
