OU gets blamed

Ashlee Simpson disgusts me. She is not attractive at all and is the worst singer I think I've ever heard. She always has an excuse.

But on a personal note, it makes me mad actually that you don't even have to sound good to be a singer. If you have access to a sound studio, anyone can sound good. I could use a few bucks making albums on the side.

I think our resident L.A. music insider should weigh in on this one.

Spot Dailey, where are you?

Please don't get me started. The corporate mentality seems to have reverted to the old Louis XVI (It was one of the Louis. Maybe a different number) mode of dealing with the restless masses by saying "Give them Circuses". Folks, it's a Milli Vanilli planet where nothing is what it seems. The whole world of music suffers from having become a producers medium as opposed to an artist medium. Perfect example is the music explosion of the '60s was almost purley driven by artists. From the artists on down through the record companies to the DJs that played the stuff. Everybody of our generation was just making it up on the spot. It was art. It was constantly changing. Radio would play The Dead, Dionne Warwick, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Hendrix in the same half hour. But the brain trusts of our great country have packaged it all up for our consumption because their marketing analysts tell them this is what's happening if they want to reach their target audience. Just who that is I have no idea. Basically, we're getting the musical equivalent of McDonald's cheesburgers served up on the airwaves. We're just being sold. I remember when it was the public who decided what they wanted to listen to. Nowadays if you can get by Clear Channel and all the other big corp. radio stations and make it on their play lists by and putting enough money in enough people's hands, you've got yourself a hit. I did some research last year on getting airplay and several industry people whom I respect, along with a number of prominent radio people I'm still in contact with, told me if you're really interested in getting your record broken, call these guys whose names end in vowels and live in Chicago. Honest to God. So I started a dialogue with them and they remembered my successful records and all and said they'd love to take me on as a client. So they faxed me proposal that amounted to a one page agreement that listed various places where my hundred thousand dollar investment would go, some of them questionable to say the least. A great deal of that money was to be in the form of American Express "Gift Checks" with no real designated recipients. Can you say "PAYOLA"? So, armed with 100 G's (or a boyfriend that has mob connections) and a Pro Tools setup, you can make your neighbor's dog a rock star by punching the "pitch correction" button. You can even sample the voices of others who can actually sing and dub those in as well to make a fuller sound and sing the song with someone elses voice. Heck, me and Max Karl used to go in and double the lead vocal tracks on Molly Hatchett records to give the illusion that the singer of note (pun intended) could actually sing, and this was before the new technology. So, nothing is as it seems and has been that way for some time. Don't even get me started on rap and hip hop.
At any rate, if you want them to stop trying to sell you do do and tell you it's art, turn off the TV or the Radio. Don't buy their stinkin' products. If enough people pitch a hissy, they'll eventually listen. Do I see it changing? Not in the near future. There'll always be morons running the show, and until people raise their sights and consciousness higher, we'll get what we deserve. The "official art" will remain "art-ificial".

The short version is yes, she definitely is a poser that can't sing a lick, but
I've heard she can suck a golf ball through a garden hose and she did come up with the hundred G's. Guess there's something to be said for that.

she is a poor excuse for a singer!
I had rather listen to Vestal Goodman that that girl!

Vestal Goodman was a wonderful gospel singer who lived what she sang. Her style was unique (prefer it or not) and influenced American musical trends across the board. I will miss her contributions to gospel music and her personal ministry in particular. The world would have done good to have heard her voice and message at the Orange Bowl.

There's a real simple explanation to this whole problem:

If the major bowls realized that the fans coming to the BCS Championship Game are actually coming FOR THE GAME and not for everything else, we wouldn't have this problem.

They're trying to turn the game into a mini-Superbowl, and it just won't work. College fans are a different breed than pro fans, and that was evident when Simpson got what she deserved.

Let me put it this way: If Alabama was playing in the Sugar Bowl for the National Title, and they had some lame band playing at half-time... what would you do?

Spot Dailey..... hit it right on the head!!!

I have said for years MTV (as well as canned radio) was the beginning of the end for real music. I know all you guys have memories of that one special night in your 65 ford your high school sweetheart and the am radio playing "your" song. But MTV ended that with video telling you what "your" song will mean to you as well as all others......

P.S. Hey! what does this have to do with football? ... sorry for my rant.....

The sad thing is that you can go to clubs with live music and hear singer/songwriters who are so much more talented than the whole Brittney/Ashley poptarts who will never get a chance at a record deal. Actually, you can go to karoke (sp?) night and nearly all of them are an improvement. Can you imagine people who can sing and play an instrument at the same time?

I will be glad when Ashley's 15 minutes of fame is over. If it wasn't for her sister, she would probably be at the McDonalds mentioned earlier. My wife occasionally watches the 7th Heaven show she was on and says she can't act either.

Well, as someone who makes their living in the music industry, I'll tell you that we've had these discussions over and over again, but if you step back, little has changed in the last 35 or so years. People always remember the 'gool old days', but forget the number of horrible artists and one-hit wonders that were around then. Yes, modern production tech has made it possible to take a rather untalented individual/band and make them appear to have talent, but 'pop' music is no less relevant today than it was years ago, imo.

The biggest difference is the sheer magnitude of music available now. Look around, there's 100X more music being relased now than 35 years ago, and there's good stuff for you no matter what your preference is...

Hey Spot, I agree with you 2000% I worked in the radio biz and you could not be more right Clear channel is just one of the many who determine than crap is king. Why do we have such junk on the radio today that's why.
Hendrix, Doors, Grateful Dead, Aerosmith (old stuff not new crap), Allman Bros, None of this would have ever made the airways. Thats why college radio is the only form still allowed to play the true new groups. Sad but true.

Thanks Spot

You da man Spot.

My brother works by day and plays in local taverns a few nights a week. Everyone in his band has loads of talent and to see them play live is a treat. They do originals and some covers done in their own style. People who hear them for the first time often ask the question "Why don't these guys put out a record".

Answer? They don't want to.

Horse Manure !! Since the deregulation of the radio stations people like Disney and Clear Channel have swooped in and bought up all the great stations that had any credibility and completely screwed them up.
Example: I have a good friend, Geno Michellini who was THE most popular afternoon DJ in L.A. He worked for the classic rock station KLOS. Disney bought the station and fired all the high dollar personalities and hired some college kid, minimum wage workers to spin records using their format. The way the rating systems work, it took them 2 years to figure their system was in the toilet so they hired Geno back but would only let him play the songs they listed. And get this, if he plays one out of order by accident, they'll stop him and make him start over. It's such controlling horse manure. It totally cuts the artist out of the process.
Very much has changed my friend. Your response reminds me a lot of most of the industry execs I've heard in the past 2 decades. "We're just giving the people what they want", is there mantra. More fertilizer for the lawn. Hungry people eat what they're fed. Yes there were the "Disco Ducks" and other one hit wonders back then but they actually were "Good Old Days" because the music wasn't controlled and it didn't suck. I could live with that small percentage of fluff as long as I got the other 99.8% of great music.

MTV played a video? :eek2:

Actually, MTV used to be a great supporter of real music. I used to love 120 Minutes and Alternative Nation. They would play anything in those shows, especially 120 Minutes. But they had to clear time on their schedule for the millionth Real World vs. Road Rules competition.

I was driving to work today and the morning DJs played the Simpson clip from the Orange Bowl. I thought it was pretty funny. It is almost worth it to have her around purely for the humor of it all.

I can see this thread moving to Non-Sports really soon. :)

The current state of radio is so heartbreaking. Once again corporate america make a decision from a boardroom and we have to adhere to it. This is why satelite radio is the future and will over come this.
