Find a successful Pac-10 coach and ask "how much?"

It ain't that hard.
Was my thoughts exactly.

Murphy is a great coach, but like every other coach he had his flaws. When it came to the big stage he never could get it done and often times fielded teams that looked completely lost when it came to crunch time.

Folks, this will be the minority opinion; but I'm glad he's gone. He did a great job in the regular season and getting to the College World Series, but couldn't win the big one. Very frustrating when your season ends the same way, year after year, and you see somebody else celebrate. Also, Florida has owned us in the big, big games.

My thoughts exactly. If we half-a** this we'll destroy the program. I think someone from the PAC-10 would love to come coach Bama's team if Mal wants to pay the money. We have the ingredients and pull girls from all over the nation so recruiting wouldnt be a problem.

Alabama offered to match LSU's offer, making Murphy the highest paid softball coach in the country. He left anyway.
I've lost ALL respect I had for Murphy by going to a rival. I could understand if he was from Baton Rouge but he's a dang Canuck! He's making a huge error and will never have LSwho winning like we were/are. I cant wait to see our girls STOMP them next year. I still cant believe he did all of this. Talk about "shock".

Well, now we know why he wasn't overly upset with our implosion vs UF. I was disturbed by his lack of passion. He didn't even seem upset. I guess now we know why - he was already emotionally out of it.
His coaching style has always been reserved, especially on TV. He was upset and you can bet the players knew it...you can also bet that he showed his passion in the dugout, off camera, like he always has. Anyone who has ever played for him will verify that.

Also, I believe that he knew he was leaving. Showing uncharacteristic "passion" may well be confused with negativity and he would not want to leave that impression; it could complicate Alabama's search for a new coach and very likely hurt recruiting. No matter what job he took he has put his heart and soul into this team and he would never do anything to diminish that.

I disagree with the suggestion that he was "emotionally out of it" Murphy would never emotionally "walk through a game" especially a WCWS game on national TV. He has too much pride in himself and in Alabama softball for that to be an issue.

Wonder if news leaked he was leaving before the Florida game. We looked so good in the 1st 2 games and then we were a different team on Sunday.
It didn't

I'm sure he told the team, (probably last Saturday) which would explain why they had no 'fire' left in them on Sunday.
He didn't so it explains nothing and it is ridiculous to even suggest it.

He didn't tell them until after he made the decision today. He's calling them one by one.
Correct. He would never negatively impact the team moral and/or performance by telling them before or during the WCWS; to suggest different is just plain BS.

There are plenty of good coaches without having to go to the Pac When. Glenn Moore. Sharon Perkins, Rachel Lawson (IMO a rising star) just to name a few. We don't have to compete with the Pac 10 for coaches any more and for me personally, I don't want to.

That is just plain asinine! Pat Murphy and Alyson Habetz consistently brought this team to the elite levels of the sport. Before them Alabama softball and southern softball, as a whole, was a complete joke.

To quote the article on RollTide.com...

"In his 13 seasons at Alabama, Murphy amassed a 712-210 overall record and a 287-86 mark in league contests while guiding the Crimson Tide to seven WCWS, seven SEC championships (four tournament and three regular season) and a postseason berth every season. Alabama won 50 or more games nine times under Murphy, including each of his last seven seasons with the Crimson Tide.

And his bio, not including this fantastic year...

After 12 seasons as head coach, Patrick Murphy has achieved unbelievable success:

  • SixCollege World Series appearances (2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009)
  • 12 straight NCAA Tournament app. (2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999)
  • TwoSEC Championships (2006, 2010)
  • Three SEC Tournament Championships (2003, 2005, 2010)
  • Two-time SEC Coach of the Year (2006, 2010)
  • Most wins in school history (632)
  • Best winning % in school history (.771)
  • Most wins in a season in school history (66)
  • Most wins in the country-66 (2000)
  • Six Consecutive 50+ Win Seasons (2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005)
  • Consecutive Top-10 ranking (2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2001, 2000)
  • Six-time South Region Coaching Staff of the Year (2000, 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009)
  • 31NFCA All-Americans
  • 30 Easton All-Americans
  • 44 All-South Region Selections
  • 60All-SEC Selections
  • Most SEC wins in a season in UA history (25)
  • Seven Academic All-Americans
  • 10 Academic All-District Selections
  • 77 Academic All-SEC Selections
  • Nine NCAA Regional All-Tournament team selections
  • Five World Series All-Tournament team selection
  • 47 SEC Player of the Week selections
  • Youngest coach in SEC history to reach 100 wins
  • One of 12 finalists for the 2004 United States Olympic team head coaching position
  • Coached 2001 team to school record 27-0 start and No. 3 national ranking
  • Hitting coach for Canadian National Team in 2004 Olympics
  • Assistant Coach for Team USA in Summer of 2009
  • Assistant Coach for USA Junior National Team in 2010

There are very few IF ANY coaches or teams, outside the Pac 10, that even come close to those numbers. Even within the Pac 10, I guarantee he will be in the to 5 all time.

Murphy has his reasons for going to LSU. I think I know what they are and it has nothing to do with money or with him thinking LSU is a better fit. I don't like it one bit that it is LSU but IMO it is one of the few jobs he would even consider. With that said I also think it may be a bad decision but I will always respect his coaching ability and what he did for Alabama softball and for southern softball in general.

BTW, He is not a Canuck, as far as I know he was born in Waterloo Iowa. I have met his family and if they were Canadians they sure aren't anymore.

I was wrong, for some reason I thought he was a Canuck. I thought I heard that on tv once but obviously I was wrong. For his reasons for leaving I dont really care what his reason were, it would be like Saban leaving us and going to LSwho and people telling us we shouldnt be mad. He left us for a rival SEC school. If he wanted out of the SEC I would respect that, but I will refuse to wish him luck when he turned his back on us and left us to go to LSwho. I respect him and will always be grateful with what he built here in T-town but I will no longer wish him luck when he's on the other side with one of our biggest rivals in all sports. I know you might be involved with him and like him and I respect that as well, but I refuse to "root" for him at another SEC school when Bama supposedly matched what LSwho is paying him. His mentor according to reports was the Lswho coach but other than that he has no ties to the school. He quit on our girls no matter when it came out and he'll pay for it when we hammer them next year.

To me meeting his family and knowing they are nice doesnt change my view of him leaving our girls without a coach for a school he had no ties with in the same league. Like I said it would be just like Saban leaving us for LSwho after finishing 3rd in the nation this coming up year. Saban has done a TON for us and I'll always be proud of that but it doesnt mean I have to like and love him because he left us for a rival plain and simple. Paying is a .......(you all know what).

I hope whoever Mal hires brings in has alot of spirit and keeps our program up. We are getting the girls to compete with the nation, we just need a coach to get us over the hump. I dont want the next "up and coming" coach, I want one that is known and ready to win a title with our girls. We were stabbed in the back with what seemed to be no indication at all to anyone other than him and Mal, and we will probably pay the price for it unless he finds a great hire. Anything less than a proven DI coach with OKC on their resume would be a failure IMHO. To hire an assistant or someone from another division wont do anything but show Mal wouldnt care for the softball program...

Just my worthless two cents! RTR!

Check Tommy Deas Twitterfeed, but he said that UA matched LSU's offer. Y'all don't be so quick to throw Mal under the bus.
I don't think it was necessarily about money in retrospect. I do think it was at least partially about his place in hierarchy of the athletic dept. It is a fact that he asked Mal for an indoor hitting facility and was told there was no money to do it. (Really Mal) He then took it on his own shoulders and raised the money to build the facility on his own. Most of the other teams in the SEC already had an indoor facility by this time. Why do you think the softball complex is now named for the Rhodes? Thank you Mrs. Rhodes.

It really may have been time for him to move one anyway because maybe he thought he had taken Bama as far as they could go. Maybe it is time for fresh blood. Just hate it was another SEC that got him. We need Mal to hire a big name coach to maintain our position in the softball world.

Well I can't believe we wouldn't build the team an indoor hitting facility. That is absolutely pathetic.

Softball coach Murphy heads to LSU

Patrick Murphy, who turned the University of Alabama softball program into a national powerhouse, is leaving for the same position at LSU and is taking longtime assistant coach Alyson Habetz with him. Habetz, from Cowley, La., has been Alabama’s associate head coach the past four years. She played for Girouard from 1990-1995, and was named an All-American while helping lead the UL-Lafayette to a third-place finish in the 1993 Women’s College World Series.
What do yall think about Habetz as the replacement?

I'm really gonna miss seeing Habetz standing over at first and wearing those shorts.
You and me both. She has some nice legs. I had a felling this was coming. I got a chance to meet Coach Murphy back in 2001 when he brought his team up to play a double header at West Point, NY. They have come a long way since then and whomever takes over will have the componets to be a contender for years to come. I wish Coach Murphy good luck.
