Gus Malzahn. He has showed that he can win with or without talent. His wife would also represent the Crimson Tide proudly and play a part with recruiting.

Whomever turns in a resume better be a great recruiter too.
While recruiting is vital to our program, and I have no idea, but I wonder how much emphasis coach puts into the OC as a recruiter, whom is basically an assistant head coach from what I've seen. With the recruiting ability we already have, does the hire necessarily need to have a strong reputation as a recruiter? Would he take, in his mind, a potentially great playcaller/QB coach that was maybe a little shy on the recruiting front? I trust coach Saban but I hope that a good play caller and QB developer are of the highest priority.

If AJ makes the NFL, we could potentially have two guy there and might be able to have our pick of the best QB's in the nation. I felt that Coach Mac had us heading in that direction. What he did with GMAC showed me what he has to offer. He picked GMAC over others, and Saban let him do his thing.

This may be the perfect time for a new OC. Any potential candidates are going to see that Alabama is a stepping stone to whatever your heart desires, because if you are picked, you do indeed have the right stuff. Auburn fires their coordinators every four years, we send ours up or give them a raise.

This a good year for a switch. Next year ought to be lower pressure and this time next year we ought to have a top QB and RB recruited.

Here's a name out of left field: Frank Cignetti, currently the OC/QB coach at Rutgers. Just finished up his first season there, and the results this year aren't staggering (in fact, they had one of the worst rushing offenses in FBS this season at 92 ypg). However, there's the obvious connection with the Cignetti family - Curt is his younger brother - and Frank has a wealth of experience in both college and the NFL. His 2009 offense at Pitt averaged 32 ppg, and in 2008 his California offense averaged 33 ppg. He directed back-to-back offenses at Fresno State that finished in the top 10 nationally in total offense in 2004 & 2005. He's also worked with the 49ers, the Saints and the Chiefs at the NFL level. Philosophically, his offense is typically pretty similar to what we have run for the last four seasons. I'm purely speculating here, but this guy seems like a prototypical Saban hire and there are a lot of things about him that fit the mold very well.
as a Pitt season tix holder I can say that Cignetti is horrible. His '09 offense was as good as his '08 offense was bad and sure enough his Rutgers offenses are miserable. I think it's also safe to say that you should never hire someone that Wannstache was so fond of being that his previous coordinator, Matt Cavanaugh, was equally inept.

I will give Cignetti credit on making Bill Stull a productive QB for one season but the 3-0 Sun Bowl misery is one of the blackest spots on Pitt's football history...that was all Cignetti's play calling.

I know you were just throwing a name out there but....well...yikes!

I don't have any realistic expectation that CNS would hire Norm Chow but Chow is hands-down the best OC in college football over the past 20 years and can run a pro-style attack to perfection.
Chow has hit his peak and is on his downfall.

Perhaps but even at slightly less than optimal Chow is head and shoulder superior to any other OC that I've seen. Don't judge him by his time at UCLA, look at his body of work at BYU, NC State, and USC. It never is a good idea for an offensive guru to work for a head coach who thinks of himself of an offensive guru.

The thing with Chow is that he loathes recruiting. Even when he was at USC, he really only recruited when the recruits were on campus. As much as I'd love to see him as an OC for Alabama, I just don't think it'll happen. Off of the top of my head, Steve Sarkisian (HC at Washington) and Lane Kiffin are his most recent understudies. I'm sure we're not getting them.

I don't mind whom it is as long as they respect the run and pound the rock as long as the chains are moving. I would like a coordinator that can integrate a group of guys that play in sync with each other. Oh yeah, a coordinator that can design pass routes-schemes in which there is more than one receiver option (regardless of field position). We need multiple options in the passing game (not just dumping the ball off to a back if the primary receive is covered). Yes I want a lot. I am spoiled. RTR

I wouldn't look for Nick to hire a big name OC. Usually the one's getting all the media attention are the coaches that sling it all over the field in a spread style offense. Just like with CJM, Nick will probably go after a guy that's better known for player development than stats. I'd look for him to go after someone that's a great recruiter and has a pretty basic offense. I wouldnt be shocked if we've never really heard of the guy. Might be someone that's currently a position coach in the NFL. I know that, just like with the CJM hire, Nick will take his time and make the best possible decision. When it's Kirby's time to go, I'd expect the same thing there.

Mark Mangino ran some great offenses in the past. I wouldn't mind him at all.
He'd blow the food budget.

Someone mentioned the oc from Geogia Southern. Would he be feasible running the power option in the SEC? How different woul it be from the triple option at Ga tech?

I believe Coach Saban will stick with up and comers over the Norm Chow's who may be over qualified for the position. Could these guys really give up their voice to the media and give all of the control to the head coach? Someone mentioned Gruden and I laughed thinking that was probably the most improbable pick you could find because of this.
Coach Saban will get a humble up and comer, age irrelevant. Coach Mac was perfect, he should be able to get one with even better credentials this go around.

Not sure if any of you have heard about some McElwain comments after his presser but they were interesting in regards to offensive philosophy and playcalling in the SEC. He talked about how he was always a spread the field and throw it around the field guy until he got to Bama and the SEC. He quickly learned that you cannot do that because of the speed of the lineman and the linebackers in this league. He talked about how in other leagues you can expose safeties, LBs in pass coverage on a constant basis but you cannot do that in the SEC. He talked about how DTs and DEs would kill a QB if you were passing 40 and 50 times a game. He called the SEC a different beast and we should all know that. I took his comments to mean that you have to change your offensive philosophy to fit the SEC if you have always been a spread it out and throw it kind of playcaller. Plus, if you have a defense like Bama's you play to that with your offense.

What was so great was that he changed to fit Saban and the conference and still continued to put up the same types of total yardage that got him hired in the first place from Fresno. He just got the 400+ and 35+ points a game in a different manner. I am sure it was much more challenging than slinging it 45 times a game. I bet he will tear up the conference.
