Trump said the government spent "$8 million for making mice transgender." As the statement showed, it was actually to gather information about breast cancer as well as a more effective HIV vaccine in humans undergoing hormone therapy. Why is that a problem?
Because CNN, in their haste to point out every possible flaw, jumped the gun.

Seems obvious?

I thought you had an issue with the way the money was spent. In any case, Trump was still wrong, even if CNN needed to clarify their statement. Maybe CNN should have followed factcheck.org to get the correct story on the multitude of Trump's incorrect statements:

They couldn't applaud a kid with cancer. Seriously what a group of clowns. They are incapable of reading the room.

Saw a poll on the speech breaking it down by Rep,, Dem, and independents. The Reps and Independents saw the speech positively the Dems didn't. No surprise there, but you need the independents to win. The viewership was majority Rep, but the independents that watched liked it. That's a problem for the Dems. They have to figure out the messaging or the midterms won't be good for them. The Senate is a tough pull and we have less and less purple House districts. If inflation is down to 2% by early 2026 Trump may keep the House.

I wonder if there is another angle to that poll. How many people who aren't Orange Cult members actually watched the circus? I watched it for entertainment value, but, as I said above, turned it off after the nonsense meter got pinged pretty hard. Nothing but self-congratulations for stuff that isn't true, and mucho bloviation.

But I'm so glad he got good poll numbers among his sheep.

I was looking at the poll from a left outlet as it related to independents. They defined them as independents I didn't.

Because speaking the truth carries much less weight to MAGAs than gender-identity issues, transgender bathrooms, the plague of men playing female sports, DEI, critical race theory, "woke"(whatever the Hell that is other than a dog whistle) or all of the other hot button nontreversies that get their dander up.

But a rube is a rube. They know rube stuff.

The proper term for the mice is "transgenic", which refers to their genetic manipulation. Whoever wrote the speech almost certainly knew the correct term, particularly since the correct term is used in the White House press release (link above in ca's post).

But Trump wouldn't have gotten the desired kneejerk reactions from the base if he had used the correct term.

Here's the thing: I can see this happening.

But I can equally see Trump not even looking at the speech until he gave it, not even knowing what the word meant, and just saying what he figured it had to be, too, because he does this all the time. Virtually all of our non-Trump Presidents went over speeches for hours, days even, and got down the verbiage, intonation, and effect.

Trump, meanwhile, gave a speech on July 4 in his first term telling us all that the colonists "seized airports" in the 18th century. I can understand why he made this mistake, though; I've been to LaGuardia.

No argument.

But how often is that true of any President nowadays anyway?
Two groups of people watch these puff speeches:
1) the fan club
2) the people who hate the President* and want some latest reason to be offended

The days when my only choices on cable were "the President is interrupting the TV schedule" and flipping over to WTBS to watch "Movies For Guys Who Like Movies" (the Braves never seemed to be playing when the President interrupted us) are long gone.

Agreed.

Most people probably didn't even know there was a speech. So, the only ones watching are the fans and true believers, and people like me who watched for sheer mocking entertainment. :D

The ultimate comedy comes from people who read these poll numbers and think America approves of the circus show we saw this week. It was nothing but another bloviating rally for Trumpkins. And those who approved of it are no doubt MAGA loyalists.

These things have plenty of opportunity. One of my favorite takes ever was when somebody took Obama's speech regarding ObamaCare and interjected heckling by Statler and Waldorf throughout. (Statler and Waldorf are those two mean old farts that sat up in the balcony at the OG Muppet Show and ran down everything and everyone.) I guffawed. I'm guessing it still lives on in some dusty corner of the internet.

One of my favorite bits that Jay Leno used to pull was when he would ask different questions to the nominees during a debate. The best one was, "Senator Kerry, do you prefer Pamela Anderson with or without implants?"

Kerry: "I have not changed my position on Iraq" (e.g. her rack).
