QB Competition 2018

I was one of them. I remember posting something just like that and said JH > JS.

What's been confirmed is our need to have more efficient passing. JS is example 1A of how valuable that is.

i still believe jh > js in the grand scheme, but he outplayed jalen in the iron bowl.

These are pictures of Saban and Bryant at the same age (66).

The thing is... Jalen *did* improve this year. He absolutely did. Last year he would be off target whereas this year he was much more likely to hit someone in stride.

I agree he improved but you are only addressing one part of throwing. Timing is another aspect of it too. Reading progressions and throwing a receiver open are other aspects.

This is a pretty good article that explains it in greater detail:

I saw very little change from last year to this year.

Me either. I don't remember very many times that he hit a receiver in stride. I told my wife several weeks ago that if someone makes him pass us to a win, we'd be in trouble. (I'm sure I'll be reminded that he threw the winning pass against Miss State, but hey they just lost to the land sharks).

He improved in that too. He was late last year on many of his throws. He was better this year. Still a ways to go.

Agreed. The thing is he has improved from last year to this year on getting the ball out on time. But he's not getting it out on time consistently. On the times CBS (and Danielson) isolates some of his throws he seems to be about a second or more late from the when he should have thrown the ball compared to when he actually does throw it. It doesn't mean all of his throws are late. He does and has made throws on time. But he's very inconsistent with it.

Where he has not improved at all - staying in the pocket and delivering a pass under duress. He simply does not stand in the pocket. As soon as there is the tiniest bit of pressure, he is gone.

IMO... we're not really touching on the most important issue with this line of reasoning. Did Jalen do this in high pressure situations against top flite teams or in low pressure situations against lower level opponents? Don't get me wrong, I'm not throwing shade on his performance against a lot of our opponents - that game experience can help a QB improve over the long haul. Instead, what's most important to me is how he does against the best of our opponents, with a close look at completion %.
FSU: 10 for 18 for 96 yards (55.6 completion %)
LSU: 11 for 24 for 183 yards (45.8 completion %)
MSU: 10 for 18 for 242 yards (55.6 completion %)
AU: 12 for 22 for 112 yards (54.5 completion %)
Average: 11 for 20 for 158 yards (52.9 completion %)

Check out the completion % against our other 2017 opponents:
Fresno: 77.8%
CSU: 70.6%
Vandy: 52.9%
Ole Miss: 63.2%
TAMU: 59.1%
Arkansas: 63.2%
UT: 61.9%
Mercer: 100%
Average: 68.6%

Interestingly, if you go back to 2016 and check his numbers against the probable top four teams on our schedule, you get this. BTW, I give him a break for being a true freshman that year.
LSU: 10 for 19 for 107 yards (52.6 completion %)
UF: 11 for 20 for 138 yards (55.0 completion %)
UW: 7 for 14 for 57 yards (50.0 completion %)
Clemson: 13 for 31 for 131 yards (41.9 completion %)
Average: 10 for 22 for 108 yards (49.9 completion %)

For those of you who look at the raw number comparisons between 2016 and 2017 and say "see, I told you JH has improved", remember that the top 4 teams we've played thus far this year don't quite compare to our top 4 last year - there was an SEC champion and two CFP teams in that mix last year. The bottom line is that he hasn't really improved when it comes down to performances against the best teams - he's feasted on poor teams and that's elevating his numbers. If you want a comparison that is quite telling, go back and check the numbers for Blake Sims and Jake Coker from 14/15. It's a punch in the gut to see how first-year starters fared and then look at a second-year starter performing like JH has this year.

this is the thinking i cant understand. Unless you havent watched Stidham all season. he started a little slow which is to be expected with a year away. the guy has been slinging it since midseason. there are many others that think this it seems.
