QB Competition 2018

I certainly think that JH can play QB good enough for us to beat anyone including Clemson. He has all the physical tools. However, the game plan needs to support what he can do well. Cannot try and make him be someone he isn't and must be executed at a high level. We also need to be able to adjust on the fly and commit to using ALL our offensive of our playmakers.
If we do this and lose, I can live w/that. If we look like we looked against MSU and the Barn, it will be a long winter. Roll Tide!

You want to know why people are concerned???

Answer this honestly, "Are you satisfied with our 3rd down conversion rates in big games under JH?"

You understand that as good as Bama is, if we don't have the simple ability to complete short throws to convert on 3rd down we don't beat anybody that's in the playoff.

We can hand the ball to D. Harris 25-30 times in the game and it still won't be enough if we can't complete some critical throws. This is a minimum that our QB MUST be able to do.

This doesn't even account for the fact that if we want to win these game in anything other than a nail bitter we also need the QB position to hit some big, explosive passes that tend to go for 6.

To put it simply, if JH plays like he did against Auburn in the passing department, we don't win against Clemson.
Third down conversion percentage DOES NOT always correlate to winning ! Our lowest conversion percentage of the last 5 years was the 2014-2015 season with a 35.29 percentage and was ranked 99th in the country. Does anyone (other than Selma !) remember how that season worked out ? I'll take a 100% 1ST or 2ND down conversion with a ZERO 3RD down conversion every game.
Jalen could play like Tom Brady with the protection he had against Awbrens and we would have the same results. Vegas likes our odds, so do I.

I think the only way Tua plays against Clemson is if Jalen gets hurt or we're completely shut down on offense and need to make a drastic change. I hope neither of those happens.

I do think we'll see a different game plan in the playoffs - one that features Damien and Bo and not a lot of runs by Jalen. We'll use the run to set up the pass and, hopefully, throw some quick passes rather than the long-developing passes we tried in the Iron Bowl. Maybe we'll even throw to the TE every now and then. Imagine that.

My concern is the OL holding up against the Clemson DL. Each starter along that front will be drafted in the NFL. They will be tough to handle. We will need a lot of quick hitting runs and passes to offset their DL.

I'll go ahead and drop a very mild take: we will not start Tua against the '17 Clemson defense. We're trying to mold a QB of the future, not destroy his confidence when we still have a guy who can play football ahead of him.

So you're telling me our failure to convert 3rd downs last year again Clemson is NOT the primary reason we lost to them?

Sweeps could make a return. WR tunnel screens, bubble screens, and hopefully we could install different RB screens. Push the perimeter. Roll Jalen out of the pocket. Reduce the reads. Maximize Josh Jacobs. Give the kids PEDs. Hire ringers. Bribe the officials. Sell plutonium to NK. Resurrect the Roman empire. Yeah, we lost to Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl.

All of the above!!!! With us getting a "second chance" and this much time between games. I have to believe Saban makes material changes in our approach offensively. I'm not saying we roll the wish-bone out or anything. But we definitely make some changes to our offensive approach.

We're 2-3 in my lifetime in the Superdome. We haven't played well there unless it was a national title game.

I don't think Tua will start either. It's realistically smarter for him not to obviously.

BUT...IF.... we are in the 2nd quarter and down say 14-0 or 17-0 or worse and our Offense can not stay on the field because of the same issues.... QB calling his own number, taking sacks, not throwing the ball away, not seeing open WR's, not completing 3rd down passes for 1st downs, willingly stepping OOB for 5-7 yard losses etc etc etc....

I will be EXTREMELY disappointed and frustrated if we don't at least give Tua a shot off the bench.....just give the Kid a CHANCE if we are in trouble.

The more I think about it the more I become convinced that Lane Kiffin calling plays would result in Bama being back to back champs.

In order for Bama to have a chance against Clemson we will need to make Clemson defend the entire field and use their aggressiveness against them. That means we need misdirection. Kiffin did a really good job at that. Daboll hasn't done quite as good a job, and in November the playcalling has been very stale.

No one is asking for Tua to start. As Tusk said, though, if we stall out, it would be very disappointing if we don't take the chance. We have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

But kiffin didn't do it with Hurts either. All through the 2016 season it was crystal clear that we were not going to throw to routes in the short and intermediate middle of the field.

kiffin was a complete train wreck by the seccg and semi final last season.

We can fix that with Wiliams, JC Hass, Bozeman, Leatherwood and Willis.

Cotton is good against run blocking, but is average against Pass pocket.

I would not replace Jalen, at all. Forget about it because it will not happen. I would however, have a few series of plays designated for Tua if Jalen is unable to keep the offense on the field. This will at least throw Clemson off and possibly allow a spark to get things rolling. Other than that, we win or lose with the QB that has gotten us this far.

Glad you're not coaching against Clemson!

What if one of our dbs or guards is getting abused in a game??? You wouldn't sub him IF you had a trustworthy backup? If for nothing else, just to give him a series or two off to calm down?

I know the qb position is different and I'd argue the most important position on the field (check the length of this thread), but if the scenario described earlier were to occur and we find ourselves in a big hole early due to not being able to move the ball, you've got to give Tua an opportunity.

We are talking about an opportunity to win a NC...I JH struggles I just don't think you say, "Well, we'll just wait to next year."

One thing I keep hearing over and over is that we need to call short, quick passes - slants, hooks, crossing patterns, etc. In two years with two OC’s, JH has not been asked to do this consistently. It seems to the consensus that this is due to the OC philosophy. Has it occurred to us that the reason may be JH does not do this well - and if we make these calls his performance gets worse?

I’ve played QB and coached QB’s on the HS level and essential to making these short, quick passes are two things. First, an ability to get the ball out quickly and decisively into a small window before it closes. Second, an ability to use your eyes to prevent defenders from jumping the routes (most picks end up going for TD’s).

From what we’ve seen of JH, does this sound like his strong suits?

Gotta make them defend ALL of our skill players. If not, it could get ugly.
