I also agree with RedStar. I don't want to be censored because it may hurt someone's feeling. This is a message board, and if a recruit is going to roam around here, understand that we are adults and we may express our opinions as adults. I personally think Ely is another JPW/Mcelroy type, not a superstar. We seem to recruit some solid QB's, but we haven't landed that super star yet at QB. Phillip Sims may be that guy, though.
I'll take another "Mcelroy type".....2 undefeated regular seasons, SECC, NC any day of the week. JPW would have gone down as a "Bama great" had he not been handicapped by him team being undermanned by sanctions. If Ely is another JPW/GMac type we will be in good hands.
Granted, a "superstar" QB.....like Cam Newton.....who can take a mediocre team to championships....... would be great but they don't come along very often. Brissett or one of the bigger dual threat QBs may be that superstar but CNS and CJM saw something in Ely or they would never have taken his commitment.
No one was complaining about Greg being a "game manager" last year. CNS doesn't want a QB that will try threading the needle to make a great throw or throwing it up for grabs to let a great WR make a great catch. He wants a QB that will audible the team into a workable play, make the necessary reads and get the ball to where the risk is less and has a higher chance of success (evidenced by his public spanking of AJ).
JPW played well enough to beat Cam Newton's team but he can't make the wide open, in the bread basket, would be TD catches.
Agree that recruits need a thick enough skin to not let criticism bother them, and sense enough to know that what fans think doesn't mean dip........it is the coaches they have to please first.

No problem. We didn't offer Ely in an effort to get Wilder.
Excellent explanation ;) and I agree. People need to lay-off Ely. He's a very solid QB. IF he beats out P. Sims, AJ, and future stud QB's we are yet to sign, then that means he's better than those guys. Otherwise, he'll make a great back-up. That said, there's no need to get up in arms about us getting him. IMO, I didn't think we'd get any type of good QB this year. I was happy to hear about Ely committing to the good guys.

Ricky Stanzi is a "McElroy Type," and we see how this season worked out for him at Iowa. Same for Andy Dalton, but at least he's on a good team.

We didn't go undefeated because of McElroy. McElroy was a game manager, not a game changer. Was he an integral part of our team? Absolutely, and he'll go down as a legend. But he's not one of the games top QB's, no one outside of this state thinks he is.

So no, I would rather not have another "McElroy Type." I'd much rather have a game changer. I want someone who will excel in the SEC & be a first round draft pick. I want a future hall of famer at QB. We haven't had a guy sniff a starting QB job in the NFL in decades.

And I'm really tired of this argument about a QB's height. Yes there are a few success stories, very few.

6'0" QB's in the NFL
Michael Vick (Possibly the most athletic QB to ever play the position.) We all know if he couldn't run the ball he wouldn't be in the NFL.
Drew Brees (Possibly the most acurate QB to ever play the position.)

No one's saying a short QB can't play in the NFL or college football, but it is a hurdle. There's no way anyone can deny that.
I know some people want to keep this argument alive about how measurables aren't everything. And I agree to an extent. But there's a reason hardly any QB under 6'2" pans out.

Let's go back and look at the rankings from the last 9 years.
How many successful 6'0" or 6'1" QB's can you find from these lists?

2002 QB Rankings
2003 QB Rankings (You can go ahead and count Chris Leake if you want to, but the guy never took a snap in the NFL.)
2004 QB Rankings
2005 QB Rankings Colt McCoy (1 guy in 4 years so far.)
2006 QB Rankings
2007 QB Rankings (Kellen Moore, but who knows if he's just a product of Boise system. We'll know more when he tries to make it in the NFL.)
2008 QB Rankings (Kyle Parker's been an ok QB, but his future lies in baseball, not football.)
2009 QB Rankings (By all accounts Aaron Murray looks to be a stud.)

So we've got 3 guys over an 8 year span? 3 guys is what some of you want to point to for reasons why Ely's height isn't a deterrent? I agree short QB's can be very good players and extremely successful. But it's rare.

For the 3 or so Aaron Murray's on that list, you've got a 3 or 4 dozen Scott Elliott's, Harrison Beck's and Cody Hawkins.

All I know is that I'd take Brissett 10 times to saturday over Ely, but as rangerman said earlier in the thread I just don't see it happening based on the info that i've been able to gather on the kid.

And I'd like to see just how many "run first" QB's pan out. I'm not talking about the height issue, I'm talking about people's love affair with Cam-Vick types. I'm also tired of the "he's black so he's a scrambler fallacy." Phillip Sims is black, and a true dropback passer. I've even seen some mention that he'd be a candidate to move to another position. Really? Based on what? He's a Pro Style QB, quit putting labels on people because of skin color.

Brissett is an athletic guy, he has great size and may actually pan out, but how many Star Jackson's are there for every Cam. Look, QB is a hit or miss position and the most complicated of any on the field, guys of all shapes and si.es flop. We need a guy with intelligence before athleticism at that position, and I don't care if he is an inch shorter than ideal. Kellen Moore is not a product of the "Boise system." They aren't gimmicky like Malzahan. They are a Pro style offense. He has a passion for the schematics of football and he'll do well at the next level. Barring injury, I think some will be suprised just how long he sticks around the league.

For the type of offense we run, I'd take a Kellen Moore over a Cam Newton any day of the week. Now Cam, that's a guy that I'd move to another position. lol

Edit: After re-reading my post in this thread, I think I may be coming off as angry at others. I'm not, I'm just offering up another viewpoint for discussion. I also think that I may be coming off as not liking Brissett. In fact, I'm real high on him from what I know. I just don't like the public dissing of one commit in favor of someone who isn't commited, (i.e. "I'd take Brissett over Ely anyday"). The fact is that Ely has chosen the good guys, he's one of us, and he hasn't even been afforded the opportunity to begin his career before the boo birds came out. That is my only issue with the direction of this thread, that said, I do respect everyone on here's opinion.RTR

Sorry, but you're both wrong.
X2. We absolutely did not offer Ely just to try and get Wilder. Ely is an Elite 11 QB, for those of you who don't know what that is maybe you should look it up, they don't put chumps on that squad. He may not be the most talented QB out there, but you can bet your bottom dollar we wouldn't be taking him if we didn't think he could play. End of story IMO. As for Brissett, I don't see him at Bama.

RedStar makes good points and yes we had QB's that we're higher on our boards than Ely but in the end he was the one we got. We didn't offer him because of his height, we offered him because of his intangibles and his leadership. And RIP you make another very good point. There is less running QB's successful in the NFL than there are short QB's. Mike Vick is one of the very few who has the ability to throw almost as good as he runs. He has finally grasped the concept of being a QB and reading defensse and being patient this year which has made him much more successful than he was in Atlanta.

I think the moral of this story is this, trust our staff. Whoever they offer they see something in them that will help this team win. We aren't gonna go after a running QB unless he will sit in the pocket and go through his progressions. We will take a guy who is 6'1" who can read the field and lead the team over a guy who is 6'5" runs a 4.4 and will make one read and then take off. That's just the way it is. RTR.

Red, agree to a point. But this guy won last year's Auburn game. He outplayed Tebow and he put on a performance in the first half of this year's Iron Bowl that would have made Tom Brady blink. In my opinion, he was a superb college quarterback. And his numbers back that up.

Game manager? Sure. Most valuable offensive player on the Alabama team? Without a doubt.

I can't say I agree with that. I think McElroy is a great QB. He did win the Auburn game and outplayed Tebow in the SEC championship. But if your basing your reasoning off of the 2009 season, then the most valuable offensive player has to be Ingram. Not just because he won a heisman, but mid season when McElroy was in a slump and couldn't get much going he practically carried the offense. He had a few games where he didn't put up huge numbers, but I think him and the O-line were a key part of the offensive success in 2009.

This has got to be a joke. Mcelroy has been one of the most inconsistent QB's I have seen. 50% of his games he is average, 25% he is above average, and 25% he plays like crap. Add in the fact that he can be very gun shy and takes way too many sacks (OL, I know), and you have 3 losses. He is very intelligent at times, but his physical abilities would put him in the bottom 2 or 3 QB's in the SEC. I'm just saying what MANY Bama fans are thinking. Whether they say it or not, I think many of us are concerned about McCarron's ability as well. This isn't Mississippi State, the pressure to win and perform here is extremely high. We need a stud, all-SEC type QB.

First off this is a recruiting thread about Jacoby Brissett. It is not a let's take every opportunity to bash QB commit Phillip Ely and current QB Greg McElroy.

I happen to think that Ely is going to be a good QB at Bama but that remains to be seen. The fact is he is committed and will be an early enrollee at Bama in a couple of weeks.

Also, Greg McElroy is largely responsible for Bama winning the NC last year with his leadership, QB skills and yes his game management. Obviously he didn't do it by himself but he was one of the offensive team leaders. McElroy deserves much more respect from the Bama fans than he gets, in my opinion.

As I said earlier in this thread I can not see how Bama can, or will be able to, fit two QBs into this class. I say that because of the number of top prospects still considering Bama and the very limited number of spots left to fill in this class. If they somehow do sign Brissett, along with Ely, then I am pretty sure they would be able to sign one QB next season.

I agree. People like to put the tag "game manager" on some QB's and use it as either good or bad......to suit their argument. A great "game manager" will help win more championships and be more consistent than 99% of the highly athletic QB's that use their talent alone to make big plays. Football is a team sport and defenses can come up with ways to stop (or slow) the Cam Newtons after awhile. If GMac had Cam's OL (4 srs playing together for 4 years) he would have led Bama to #14 this year.

Cam Newton and the year he has had is the reason fans are suddenly wanting the tall, heavy and athletic QB's so bad.

I rest assured that the coaches will get the very best players they can at every position. If they can't get them it doesn't matter how bad us fans might want them. The coaches want Ely so that is good enough for me.

Wow. Who needs rival fans, when the program has "fans" like this. It's one thing to disagree with where McElroy's place is among Alabama QBs, it's another to bash a player that shattered several records in a short time. Be careful what you wish for. You may be wishing McElroy was still around this time next year.

Dang! That's twice I've had a part in hijacking this thread, one I started. I know there's a lot of talk about Ely and our future QB situation, and I've contributed to it as well. But let's move back to Brissett because according to some unconfirmed reports, he's seriously considering Bama. So please no more posts about Ely or McElroy.

Given QBs are always a project,, is his potential enough to replace say a XXX with one of the slots remaining? I'm guessing no. We are going to be goofy-stupid come NSD with the talent available for the limited slots.

Give me a break, I didn't bash any players. I simply said he wasn't a very consistent QB and lacked a lot of physical ability compared to others in this league. I'm giving you the objective view, not the crimson colored glasses approach. You got your feelings hurt and gave the traditional, cliche "you aren't a fan!" response. I think McElroy is a solid guy with a lot of intelligence, but his QB play often was average. How that paints me into not being a fan, bashing a kid, or whatever else is beyond me. Maybe we should all be cyborgs and not have different opinions, ever? Somehow it is okay to say that the OL played poorly this year, but saying a QB was average is "Bashing a player" and acting like a rival fan?

I would love to see Brissett at Bama, but I don't think we have the space. I'd much rather have two solid OL's than 2 QB's this class.

OK we get it, the various opinions are noted for the record. Some of us are offended by differing opinions but as I said this is not the thread for this Greg McElory discussion. Let's all just agree to disagree and just move on and continue with recruiting talk. Please no more back and forth about Greg McElroy in this thread. If you must continue that discussion, do so in private, or take it to the football board.
