I have several friends that either run or moderate a forum. All of them say that eliminating politics or religion was inevitable. When their forum was smaller and younger, it was easier to keep things in check. But as it grew, it became impossible to control.
Now, admittedly, these were forums that had a multi-national membership and moderator panel. We have a more monolithic membership, and as a result, it might be easier to keep a lid on things.
The other problem I hear about all the time, from mutual friends, is that some mods on those forums cross the line from just being a moderator, and over to being an antagonist. They use their power to crush opposition. One went as far to place a close friend, who in a lot of ways is his mentor, under moderation. Solely because he reminded said moderator that he was publicly denying anything he had been taught.
I haven't been here long enough to gauge the potential for this to happen here. I'm sure I can find folks who will claim that I am blind to what is going on. So, let's assume for purpose of debate that some goes on.
So, how to prevent it, or slow it down.
Well, the only way that comes to mind is to eliminate controversial topics. Controversial topics (religion and politics) are a land mine. Sooner or later, mud is going to start to fly, and a mod, any mod, is prone to saying "I'm tired of herding cats today", and they are forced to step in. Posts start getting deleted. Sparks start to fly. Tempers flare.
No, don't want that job. Even though I enjoy a good debate (I better be able to handle one: the wife used to be Debate Team coach), it wouldn't upset me if the folks who run this site decide for their sanity to more strictly limit topics. I would understand it more than I would miss it.
