Not that I think it will happen this year, but can anyone think of the last time that Alabama red-shirted a 5-star recruit for anything other than medical reasons? (i.e. Love last year)

FWIW I dont think Love should have been a 5 star last year, he is a bit undersized for a 5 star OT...

However, I don't believe any of our 5 stars will be red shirted this year! Trent will deffidently play this year, D.J, provided he works hard enough, will grab the starting spot, Dre will come in on package defense plays, and start next season, and Nico will also come in on Package defenses or give Rolando a break.

I see most of those guys starting and a lot of the "other star" guys contributing as well. The D-Line guys are going to see the field if they get in for this upcoming year.

I think this may be jumping the gun a little. He has only played O Line for 1 year. There is a big difference between highschool D-linemen and SEC D-linemen.

These 320-350 lb OTs that are at the this year aren't exactly the norm. When you look at last year's 5* OL, he was one of the biggest and there were a lot of them (8 on Rivals, 6 on Scout), and he's bigger than Scouts number 1 OT this year and right on track with the other 2.

And I could see possibly both of DJ and Dre redshirting this year. I wouldn't bet on it, but its possible. We're gonna have quite a few guys over Dre next year, and if DJ isn't as polished as he should be, he may redshirt

Players play. If Dre has intensity and the mental aspect of the game he will play opposite KJ in the nickel package when JA slides over. Who is going to stop him? Who will stop DJ? Do you pull MJ off LG to left tackle only to replace him with DR? DJ has a great chance as well. DH could slide to rush end allowing NJ to spell him if he comes ready to play. The possibilities are endless. I do believe, however, that this will be the last year that we can honestly expect freshmen to walk in and contribute at a level greater than an upperclassman, and that thought excites me.

Trent Richardson will play, if not start, from day 1 in my opinion.

Here's my take. Alabama's two-year recruiting run is starting to rival some of the dynasty programs we have seen in the recent past. If we finish Top 3 next year, it's going to be right up there with anyone for a three-year period.

If you look at USC from 2000 through 2007 (roughly), you're going to see some examples of them routinely redshirting 5-star players because of depth, especially skill players. Right now, our 5-stars tend to play immediately because their competition is less talented, even with experience. Those days are quickly coming to an end; there will be premier talent at every position soon.

Let me throw this out there, too. In hindsight, given what he was able to do last year, should the staff have given BJ Scott a redshirt?

I think Fluker will be redshirted. I think our left tackle will be Carpenter or Johnson.

The left offensive tackle spot, next to QB, is probably the most difficult position on the field to play. You're facing the opposing teams best pass rusher, and he's probably a junior/senior who'll be drafted. Fluker's not ready for that. He's not Andre Smith coming out of high school. Unbelievable potential, but needs some work.

Tyler Love is a mystery right now and hopefully will be a pleasant surprise at that position.

No way they redshirt Kirkpatrick. But I think Alonzo Lawrence will be our surprise on defense next year, and a good one at that.

I'll say this. When it's almost impossible to predict "who'll play where", that's a good thing.

It means we're LOADED.

Kinda reminds me of my days at Bama when Bryant was the coach and we tried to guess which of the 15 running backs would gain the most yards in a particular game.

You just never knew which stud hoss would step to the forefront in any given week.

That's when you know you have a great team, and that's where we're headed.

Yeah, the thing Saban has given us in 2.5 classes is supreme depth at just about every position on the field. Besides Julio, it's anybody's guess who will start at WR and not for a lack talent but for a bevy of young talent that we aren't sure who will rise to the top. The battle for 3rd CB is going to be heated and there is absolutely no guarantee that Johnson will retain his role off the bench. I can't remember being as deep as we are at DL and LB since I've been old enough to follow Alabama like a fanatic. We are actually legitimately 2-deep with SEC quality players at every OL position. That hasn't happened since 2002.

Like I said in another board (or maybe a thread here), the days of us getting pants by the Utah's and ULM's of the world cause we only have 5 SEC-capable linemen on roster is over. Give this thing one more year of development [and needless to say more recruiting], and we are going to be the USC of the South...not Kiffy's Tennessee.

I thought Shaun played as a true freshman in 1996.

I got a little frustrated trying to read this; how about using names instead of just initals?

I guess memories around here are short. With our depth issues, I dont see it happening under any circumstances...
My memory works just fine. I seem to remember us wining 12 games last year while we had "depth issues." Seriously how long are we going to have the "depth issues" excuse around? We played a ton of young players last year to get game experience and build depth. A lot of last years class didn't play even though we had "depth issues". If we didn't play guys last year, I'm sure we'll end up not playing guys this year.
