I understand that the coaching staff will make the numbers work. They know what they are planning to do with different scenerios. But does anybody have a plausible hypothetical idea of what the plan is to get the number to 85, if we sign 25-30. It seems unreal to me that such high profile recruits would be willing to delay their entrance. The coaching staff probably has a very good idea of who will qualify and that plays into all this, but I've followed recruiting a long time and this year is the most puzzling for numbers I've seen.

But I'm convinced there is a plan, and man, the quality of recruits is through the roof as many of you have observed.
Same here and I've followed it for about 25 years . Spent right at half of that period working in it - 80's & 90's - and I've never seen anyone work the #'s like Coach Saban . I feel we're looking at around least 10 of our current players being shown the door .

Agreed.

I don't know the precise number, obviously, but I fully expect a lot of transfers in the coming months.

As I said in a previous thread, without naming names, I think we can all look at the 85-man roster and quickly find plenty of players who really have no legitimate chance at meaningful playing time. I imagine many of those will be moving on somewhere before Fall of 2009.

In the past offseason, we had 11 players, by my count, depart:
Zeke Knight, Patrick Crump, Tremayne Coger, Cody Davis, Jimmy Johns, Jeremy Elder, Nick Fanuzzi, Tarence Farmer, Charles Hoke, Lionel Mitchell, and BJ Stabler.

I don't expect that number to be much different this year. Hopefully instead of two dismissals, we have zero, but between transfers, health issues, and those just giving up football altogether, we should have in the neighborhood of 10 defections (maybe 7-11 or so).

So, I think we had 83 scholarshipped players on our Fall roster...
Can anyone verify that? (Source: http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/sports/1217578598140700.xml&coll=2&thispage=2)

If we start at 83 on scholarship.
Minus 10 to graduation/ NFL.
Minus ~10 defections due to health, transfer, etc.
We're looking at resting at 63 scholarships prior to arrival of the new Freshmen, including Carpenter, Preyear, Murphy, and Warmack, bringing the number to 67.
That would leave room for 18 freshmen this Fall. We have exactly 18 commits right now who would plan to enroll in the Fall.
If we sign 11 more guys, then I would figure that they would need to be worked out between academic casualties, or more defections.

That's my take, so it's probably not 100% accurate.

Is this number something you think we'll see each year, or is CNS still "weeding guys out"?
Well, honestly I have no idea if the number will be remotely the same.
Maybe three or four guys left for health reasons, two were dismissed, and the rest seemed to give up based on: (1) lack of playing time, or (2) just didn't care enough about football to go all out.

I guess everyone pretty much leaves due to:
(1) Health (whether voluntary or involuntary)
(2) Dismissal
(3) Voluntarily leave the team

I think we will usually have at least one or two quit due to nagging injuries. Just the nature of football.
Hopefully, our dismissals are kept to a minimum. As in zero.
At this point, in terms of #3, if you are a sophomore and are not running first or second team, then your playing days look to be a thing of the past. There are a few exceptions, but I have no doubt that we'll continue to see voluntary defections every year. Maybe not 10, but probably at least 2 or 3.

So, I'd say a conservative estimate of those who will not be on the team come August is 4. A very aggressive estimate would be about 12. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

My count is 84 when you include Colin Peek (transfer sit out) and the three (Leigh Tiffin, PJ Fitzgerald, and Tyrone King) who were awarded scholarships in August. We would have been right at the 85 limit had Jermaine Preyear used a redshirt year to rehab from shoulder surgery instead of grayshirting.

Not every year. Despite this fantastic season, the staff are still in the process of building the program to where they want it and bringing in talent to fit what they want.

In coming years, there may be a class here or there where we sign very few, like in the teens and not look to weed anybody out. That will be because they feel like we have the talent on the team and are just looking for either the best talent available or to fill certain spots.

But normally will be able to bring in full classes as there will be a more normal amount of seniors, more juniors jumping to the NFL, a few talented guys may transfer due to maybe being down on the depth chart, and of course injuries and dismissals for behavior

As stated in a few posts above, there are SEVERAL recruits that are borderline academically. I certainly agree that there will be some attrition of current players, but I think the reason we are taking more commits than originally planned is because the coaches have a better idea of who will qualify in the 2009 class. We will have between 5-10 signees on NSD that are questionable with regard to whether or not they will qualify.

:BigA:I do not feel coach Saban will recruit a player that he feels does not at least have a shot of playing in the NFL! Alabama is becoming a hard nose physical team just like the NFL. His words still echo in my hear when he said that he wanted other teams to hate having to play us!!! Roll Tide!

I also had us @ 84 . I imagine several of us will be scratching our heads up until late August with the #'s situation :p_conf: At least we'll have something to discuss over the Summer other than live elephants cracking concrete around Bryant-Denny and white head gear :D

Expect to see some current scholarship players who have played a limited amount going non-scholarship next year and paying their own way as walkons to stay on the team. In any event, I trust this staff to be creative and make the numbers work out just the way they want them to work out.

Sabenomics

LOL...First, allow me a political analogy--ironically, I see a lot of similarities between reaganomics and sabanomics. Both men inherited dismal, pathetically weak situations and Saban, like Reagan, seem to be bringing on a level of prosperity that we have not seen around here in a LONG time through good old hard work and strength over our enemies....

Bad precedent.....Mama's and papa's are gonna think twice before they let their kid go to a school that does that. I know that "scholarships are 1 year at a time" but all kids sign expecting to be there 4 years unless they turn pro, mess up or fail academically.
I trust CNS will make the numbers work but I hope it doesn't involve pulling scholarships from players that are working hard and trying to make the team.

Yep . That's why it rarely ever happens . The staff will try and do their best to find our guys another place to play on scholarship . Places like JaxSt , Ga Southern , etc. .

Small update on Morgan Moses. There has been word very recently that Moses may be much more in play for UA than most think. Some have speculated that he may even be a better shot than Bobby Massie. Should be an interesting couple of months.

New TI article confirms CNS told Tana Patrick he is recruiting him mainly for the Jack position. Guess we aren't hurting for a Jack recruit as much as we thought. RTR.:BigA:

Hearing BOTH ;) very nice if true. The inside on M.M. is that Ohio St. was where he was looking and they have slow played him. We have always been in it for him. Just like high school when you wanted to go to the prom with one girl to get the second, who turns out later to be the best thing since sliced bread. RTR.

I think Massie is the one that I would really like to see but you will not find be kicking any rocks if we get both.
